Short answer: Apple has dramatically expanded iPhone assembly in India, but it has not publicly confirmed that every iPhone sold in the United States is assembled there. The original “all U.S.-bound iPhones from India by the end of 2026” claim was a reported plan, not an Apple announcement. Bloomberg later reported that India assembled about 55 million iPhones in 2025—roughly one-quarter of global production—yet that figure covers worldwide output, not a verified U.S.-market allocation.
What Apple reportedly planned in April 2025
A Financial Times report, summarized by Reuters, said Apple was accelerating talks with Foxconn and Tata Electronics to assemble most or all iPhones sold in the United States in India by the end of 2026. The immediate motivation was reducing exposure to potential U.S. tariffs on China-origin finished devices.
The report described an intended supply-chain change, not a completed migration or a formal Apple commitment. It also represented an acceleration of Apple’s existing effort to diversify beyond China rather than an announcement that Apple was abandoning Chinese manufacturing.
Reuters’ coverage is available at Reuters; a contemporaneous summary appears at MacRumors.

What had changed by 2026
Independent reporting shows that India became a much larger iPhone manufacturing base. Bloomberg reported in March 2026 that Apple assembled approximately 55 million iPhones in India during 2025, up from about 36 million in 2024. That was approximately 25% of Apple’s worldwide iPhone production, according to Bloomberg’s sources.
Foxconn and Tata Electronics are central participants in the Indian network, which includes multiple facilities rather than one plant. Reporting and industry commentary also indicate that production has expanded beyond older, lower-cost models to include newer flagship devices. Apple’s own supplier information lists a global manufacturing network, but does not publish a definitive model-by-model or destination-by-destination breakdown.
Bloomberg’s production report is at Bloomberg. A separate industry projection put India at about 28% of global iPhone shipments in 2026, but that is an estimate rather than an Apple disclosure: Moneycontrol.
Reported target versus confirmed facts
| Question | What the evidence supports |
|---|---|
| Was an India-for-U.S. shift reported? | Yes. April 2025 reporting described a goal of assembling most or all U.S.-sold iPhones in India by the end of 2026. |
| Did Indian output rise sharply? | Yes. Bloomberg reported about 55 million units in 2025, versus roughly 36 million in 2024. |
| Does 55 million prove all U.S. demand was supplied by India? | No. It is a global Indian production figure; the destination split was not disclosed. |
| Has Apple confirmed 100% India sourcing for U.S. iPhones? | No public Apple source reviewed here states that every U.S.-bound unit is assembled in India. |
| Has Apple left China? | No. China remains important for components, suppliers, engineering, logistics and production serving other markets. |
What Apple has—and has not—confirmed
Apple’s official supply-chain page and fiscal third-quarter 2026 materials discuss global manufacturing, financial results and tariff effects, but do not state that 100% of U.S.-sold iPhones are now made in India. Apple’s supply-chain overview is at Apple’s supply-chain page, and its quarter ended June 27, 2026 was reported on July 31 at Apple’s newsroom.

The most accurate wording is: Apple has not publicly disclosed a complete U.S.-market sourcing breakdown. Independent reporting shows a dramatic expansion in India, but the exact percentage of U.S.-bound iPhones assembled there remains undisclosed.
Why Apple wants an India-based U.S. supply stream
Lower concentration and tariff exposure
Moving final assembly for U.S.-bound devices to India can reduce direct exposure to tariffs applied to Chinese-origin finished phones. It also gives Apple another large production hub and more flexibility when negotiating with governments.
Market-specific manufacturing
Apple can use India primarily for U.S. demand while retaining Chinese facilities for other regions or as contingency capacity. The original coverage cited more than 60 million U.S. iPhones a year, but that was a reported estimate; annual demand varies with model launches, inventory and whether the measurement is shipments or sell-through. Reuters attributed that scale to the original report at Reuters.
Indian incentives and supplier development
India offers production incentives and a growing electronics ecosystem. Expanded Apple orders can support factory investment, employment and local suppliers, although India’s component base remains less dense than China’s.

“Assembled in India” does not mean “China-free”
Final assembly is only one layer of an iPhone’s supply chain. A phone assembled in India may contain components made in China or elsewhere, use Chinese machinery or rely on Asian suppliers and logistics. Apple’s design, software and contractor ownership are separate questions from the country printed on an assembly label.
Therefore, “India assembly,” “less China exposure” and “complete supply-chain independence” are not interchangeable descriptions. The available evidence supports diversification and market-specific assembly, not total decoupling.
Can India handle all U.S.-bound production?
India has demonstrated substantial capacity growth, but public information does not establish that it can produce every model, storage configuration and launch volume needed for the entire U.S. market without Chinese backup.
- Peak launch periods require rapid scaling, high yields and tightly timed component deliveries.
- Apple must ensure that Indian facilities can meet quality and model-mix requirements across the lineup.
- Imported components, customs processing and expedited air freight can affect cost and resilience.
- Labor, infrastructure, regulatory and environmental issues remain operational variables.
- Maintaining Chinese capacity may be prudent even if India becomes the principal U.S. source.
The original report said reaching the target would require roughly doubling Indian capacity. Later output growth is consistent with that direction, but it does not prove that the target was fully completed.

What the shift means for U.S. buyers
Prices
Indian assembly does not automatically mean lower U.S. prices. Apple’s fiscal 2026 third-quarter release referred to tariff refunds affecting company results, but did not promise that savings would be passed to customers. Retail pricing can also reflect currency, freight, inventory and future tariff rules.
Features and software
Country of final assembly by itself should not change iOS functionality, App Store access or normal software-update eligibility.
Imported models
Buyers importing an India-market iPhone should verify the exact model number, supported U.S. cellular bands, eSIM or physical-SIM configuration, warranty and repair eligibility. Those terms depend on the product and purchase market, not simply the assembly country. Country of assembly is not a reliable proxy for quality.
For official U.S. compatibility and service, use Apple’s iPhone store, check AppleCare+ eligibility, and confirm support with an Apple retail location. Do not assume an imported phone qualifies for the same warranty or carrier features.

This is not U.S.-assembled iPhone manufacturing
Apple has announced major U.S. investment in semiconductors and wireless-connectivity components. Its Broadcom announcement said the agreement is expected to exceed $30 billion and produce more than 15 billion U.S.-made chips. That is significant domestic component manufacturing, but it is not an announcement that iPhones will be finally assembled in the United States.
See Apple’s announcement at Apple-Broadcom U.S. chip manufacturing.
What to watch next
- Explicit comments in Apple earnings calls or filings about U.S.-market sourcing.
- Updated Apple supply-chain disclosures naming destinations or model allocations.
- Foxconn and Tata announcements about Indian capacity and launch readiness.
- Customs, export and shipment data that distinguish Indian production from global Indian output.
- Model-specific assembly information on retail devices.
- Tariff rulings that change the economics after assembly or during import.
Bottom line
Apple’s India expansion is established: reported Indian iPhone output rose to about 55 million units in 2025, or roughly one-quarter of global production. What remains unconfirmed is the headline’s strongest claim—that every iPhone sold in the United States was assembled in India by the end of 2026. Treat that as a reported target, not a publicly verified Apple fact.
