The public record still does not show a finalized Baidu-only purchase, exclusive deal, consumer launch date, or disclosed payment terms.
What the original 2024 reports actually said
On March 22, 2024, Reuters, citing a Wall Street Journal report, said Apple had held preliminary talks with Baidu about using Baidu’s generative-AI technology in devices sold in China. That wording described negotiations, not a completed purchase.
More definite versions appeared in Chinese media. Reports said Baidu could become Apple’s local generative-AI provider for the iPhone 16, iOS 18 and Mac software in China. 9to5Mac and the South China Morning Post attributed those claims to Chinese sources.
The reports were unsettled from the start. On March 26, MacRumors reported that Apple and Baidu had not yet reached a generative-AI partnership. Neither Apple nor Baidu announced a signed contract, purchase order, exclusive relationship or launch commitment.

What “buying AI services” could mean
The headline shorthand can describe several very different commercial and technical arrangements:
- Model access: Apple could license access to Baidu’s foundation model or pay to use an application-programming interface.
- Model customization: Baidu could adapt or fine-tune ERNIE for Apple’s Chinese-language, safety and compliance requirements.
- Cloud processing: Selected requests could be handled by Baidu-hosted infrastructure while Apple controls the interface and operating-system features.
- Component supply: Baidu’s model could handle particular Apple Intelligence functions rather than the whole service.
- Services contracting: The companies could agree on undisclosed usage, licensing or integration fees without Apple acquiring Baidu technology or ownership.
Nothing in the available reporting establishes that Apple bought Baidu, acquired ERNIE, outsourced all Apple Intelligence functions, or installed Baidu’s model on every Chinese iPhone.
Why Apple needed a China-specific AI arrangement
Apple Intelligence became available in other markets during 2024, but mainland China required a different path. Reuters reported that China requires generative-AI services and large language models to complete regulatory procedures before public release.
A local partner could help with:
- Simplified-Chinese language behavior and local names, places and cultural references.
- Content controls required under Chinese rules.
- Local search and information ecosystems.
- Data handling, hosting and compliance reviews.
- Integration with Apple’s operating systems and privacy requirements.
This is why Apple could not simply assume that the model arrangement used in the United States or Europe would be available unchanged in mainland China.

What Baidu’s role was—and remains
Baidu’s ERNIE family is the company’s large-language-model platform. Baidu describes ERNIE as infrastructure for generative-AI applications and commercializes it through consumer services, enterprise offerings and AI Cloud, as outlined in its first-quarter 2024 results.
In the Apple story, Baidu’s role should be described cautiously:
- In March 2024, Baidu was reported as a prospective local model provider.
- In December 2024, reporting said Apple and Baidu were struggling to adapt Baidu’s models for Chinese iPhones.
- In July 2026, Baidu confirmed that it was working with Apple on China-specific Apple Intelligence features.
Public reporting does not identify the exact features Baidu supplies, the model versions involved, whether Baidu is Apple’s primary provider, or how much Apple pays.
Why the Baidu plan encountered problems
On December 4, 2024, Reuters, summarizing reporting from The Information, said Apple and Baidu faced hurdles adapting Baidu’s models.

Model performance and localization
A model can perform well in general testing yet require substantial work for Apple’s response-quality, safety and Chinese-language expectations. Local references, terminology and content rules add further testing requirements.
Privacy and data use
The same account described tension over Apple’s privacy requirements and Baidu’s desire to retain and analyze user-query data. A cloud provider may want query data for monitoring, analytics, safety or model improvement, while Apple’s policies can limit such retention and use.
Product consistency
Adapting an external model also raises questions about how Apple can deliver predictable behavior across operating systems, devices and features while meeting local regulatory requirements.

Alibaba separately confirmed that its Qwen model would be integrated across iOS, iPadOS, macOS and visionOS for Chinese users. TechCrunch described Qwen as part of the China arrangement and noted Apple’s earlier Baidu discussions and adaptation difficulties.
Baidu also confirmed ongoing work with Apple. Alibaba’s confirmation does not prove Baidu was dropped, and Baidu’s confirmation does not prove it is the main provider. The evidence supports a multi-partner China-specific effort, not a publicly documented Baidu-exclusive deal.

What remains unknown
- Whether Apple and Baidu signed a definitive agreement and when.
- Whether either partnership is exclusive.
- Which model handles each Apple Intelligence request.
- Whether processing occurs on-device, through Apple’s private cloud infrastructure or through a partner’s systems.
- How queries are retained, stored and used for safety or model improvement.
- Whether every global Apple Intelligence feature will be offered in mainland China.
- Whether Apple pays per query, licenses models, shares revenue or uses another structure.
- The exact consumer launch date and final feature list.
Bottom line: did Apple buy Baidu AI?
“Apple buying AI services from Baidu” was a plausible shorthand for the March 2024 reports, but it was not a confirmed standalone purchase. The evidence shows preliminary talks, later-reported adaptation problems and continuing cooperation. By July 2026, Alibaba’s Qwen was an explicitly confirmed part of Apple’s China strategy, while Baidu also said it was working with Apple. The accurate description is a developing, China-specific Apple Intelligence arrangement involving multiple local partners—not a completed, publicly disclosed Baidu-only deal.
