Apple’s U.S. Back to School promotion ran from June 20 through September 30, 2024, and is now expired. Eligible education customers who bought qualifying Macs or iPads through Apple received an Apple Gift Card in addition to the regular Education Store price reduction. The maximum reported value was $150 for qualifying Macs; qualifying iPads generally received up to $100. This was future Apple credit, not a universal $150 reduction in cash at checkout.
Apple’s live education promotion pages now describe a different 2026 offer, so they should not be used to treat the 2024 promotion as available today.

Contemporaneous coverage reported the launch and the additional gift-card benefit alongside education pricing: 9to5Mac’s June 20, 2024 report. Apple-linked documentation quoted the September 30 end date in this Apple Community discussion.
Which Macs and iPads were covered?
The headline’s “up to” wording mattered. Apple varied the promotional amount by eligible product and configuration, so the maximum did not apply to every device.

| Product category | Reported 2024 gift-card value | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Eligible Mac | Up to $150 | Exact amount depended on the eligible model or category. |
| Eligible iPad | Generally up to $100 | Contemporaneous reporting most consistently identified iPad Air and iPad Pro; the original 2024 chart controlled eligibility. |
Mac families
Contemporaneous coverage identified qualifying Mac families including MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iMac and Mac mini. It did not establish one $150 amount for every configuration, so a buyer needed to check the live Education Store listing and promotion terms for the specific model.
iPad families
The strongest contemporary reporting identified iPad Air and iPad Pro as qualifying categories with a lower card value than the Mac maximum. Do not assume that every base iPad or iPad mini qualified: Apple’s current product lineup is not proof of the 2024 promotion’s model chart. Apple’s current iPad education catalog is at apple.com/us-edu/shop/buy-ipad, but it describes present-day products rather than reconstructing the expired offer.
How the “free” gift card appeared at checkout
The promotion was structured as a promotional product transaction layered onto the education price. Apple’s terms said customers were charged for the items in the cart, including the gift card, while a corresponding promotional discount was applied to the eligible device. That accounting can make the card look like an extra charge.
For example, if an eligible Mac had an Education Store price of $X, the order could show:

- Mac at the education price: $X.
- Promotional Apple Gift Card: +$150.
- Promotion discount applied to the Mac: −$150.
- Net merchandise price before tax: approximately the education price of the Mac, with a $150 card issued for later Apple purchases.
Compare the complete receipt rather than treating the gift-card line as a second payment. An Apple Community discussion documented buyers’ confusion about this presentation: discussions.apple.com/thread/255160883.
Who could use Apple’s education promotion?
“Student discount” was shorthand, not a complete eligibility definition. Apple’s U.S. education rules covered individuals such as:
- Current college or university students.
- People accepted to a higher-education institution.
- Parents buying for an eligible higher-education student.
- Faculty and staff of higher-education institutions.
- Employees of public or private K–12 schools.
- Homeschool teachers.
- Certain school-board members and elected or appointed PTA/PTO officers.
Apple could request proof of qualification. The education channel was for personal purchases, not institutional procurement, enterprise or government purchasing, business buying, or resale. See Apple’s education payment and eligibility guidance and education sales policies.
Where could customers buy?
Qualifying orders could be placed through:
- Apple’s U.S. Store for Education online.
- Apple retail stores.
- Apple’s telephone sales channel at 1-800-MY-APPLE.
- In some cases, an eligible Apple Authorized Campus Store, subject to the promotion’s terms.
The order and delivery had to meet the promotion’s U.S. requirements. Buying an Apple device from Amazon, Best Buy, Costco or another retailer did not automatically produce Apple’s promotional gift card; those sellers could run separate discounts.

What the Apple Gift Card was—and was not
The card was usable for later Apple spending, subject to Apple’s gift-card terms. Potential uses included:
- Apple hardware and accessories.
- Apple Pencil, keyboards, cases, adapters and hubs.
- AppleCare+.
- Eligible App Store apps, subscriptions and iCloud services.
Apple Gift Cards were not cash rebates. Do not assume they could be exchanged for cash or freely transferred. The governing terms are at apple.com/legal/giftcards/applestore. Apple’s payment help also explains permitted product purchases: apple.com/us-edu/shop/help/payments.
Was it worth more than a normal discount?
Judge the offer by the value you could actually use:
- High value: You already planned to buy an Apple Pencil, keyboard, AirPods, AppleCare+ or another Apple product.
- Lower value: You preferred cash savings, had no planned Apple purchases, or found a retailer offering a larger immediate discount.
- Potentially poor timing: You were considering a refurbished device or a model close to a hardware refresh. A larger price reduction elsewhere could outweigh a card restricted to Apple.
Compare the Education Store price plus the usable portion of the card with the complete out-of-pocket price at Apple, an authorized reseller and Apple Certified Refurbished. Do not count a card at face value if you would not otherwise spend it.

Choosing between a Mac and an iPad
When a Mac was the safer college computer
- Courses required desktop-only software, coding tools or engineering applications.
- You needed a conventional file system and extensive multitasking.
- You were doing professional video, audio or other demanding creative work.
MacBook Air was generally the practical fit for writing, research, browsing and everyday productivity; MacBook Pro made more sense when the workload justified its higher price. Those are use-case distinctions, not a claim that every 2024 configuration performed identically.
When an iPad made more sense
- You prioritized handwritten notes, PDF markup, drawing and low weight.
- Your coursework was well served by iPadOS apps.
- You already had access to a laptop or desktop for tasks an iPad could not handle.
Include the full setup cost: Pencil, keyboard, case, storage and, if needed, cellular service. An iPad can become an expensive laptop substitute without delivering desktop software compatibility.

Returning the device
Apple’s promotion terms required the qualifying product and the promotional product to be returned for a full refund. If the card had been redeemed, spent or could not be returned, Apple could deduct its original value from the refund or exchange. See the terms at apple.com/us-edu/shop/back-to-school/terms-conditions.
Annual education quantities
Apple’s general education rules typically limited annual purchases, including one desktop, one Mac mini, one MacBook and up to two iPads, with separate limits for displays and accessories. The historical promotion also limited promotional products per qualified purchaser; the original 2024 terms controlled the exact limits.

Eligibility and resale
Apple’s education sales policies restricted the program to qualifying personal purchases. Using an ineligible purchaser or buying for resale could lead Apple to seek repayment or return of the promotional product.
Bottom line for today’s reader
The 2024 event was a U.S.-only, time-limited Apple education promotion that combined an education price with future Apple credit. It ended on September 30, 2024. Macs could receive up to $150, while qualifying iPads generally received up to $100, but the exact model chart mattered. The deal was strongest for an eligible buyer who already expected to spend the card on Apple products or services; it was weaker than a straightforward cash discount for everyone else.
Apple’s current page lists a separate July 16–August 27, 2026 promotion with different terms: Apple’s current education promotion terms. That page does not revive the 2024 offer.
