Apple’s announcement was real, but it is no longer a current event. On July 8, 2025, Apple said Jeff Williams would leave the chief operating officer role later that month and that Sabih Khan would succeed him. Williams did not leave Apple immediately: he stayed through a transition period overseeing design, Apple Watch and health initiatives, then retired from Apple later in 2025.
In other words, “later this month” referred to July 2025—not the month in which you may be reading this.
What Apple announced on July 8, 2025
Apple described the change as a long-planned succession. Sabih Khan, then Apple’s senior vice president of Operations, was selected to become COO. Williams was scheduled to transition out of the role later in July while continuing to report to CEO Tim Cook.
Apple’s announcement did not say that Williams was leaving the company that day. During the interim, he continued overseeing Apple’s design team, Apple Watch and the company’s health initiatives. Apple said the design organization would report directly to Cook after Williams retired.

Apple’s regulatory disclosure also described the officer transition. The filing is available in the company’s Form 8-K exhibit.
The timeline: two separate changes
| Date | What happened | What it meant |
|---|---|---|
| July 8, 2025 | Apple announced the succession | Khan was named Williams’s successor as COO. |
| Late July 2025 | COO responsibilities moved to Khan | Apple’s announcement said “later this month.” A filing record commonly identifies July 25, 2025 as the effective date; that date should be treated as an attributed filing date, not as wording from Apple’s press release. See the SEC-indexed filing record. |
| Later in 2025 | Williams retired from Apple | Apple said he planned to retire late in the year. In December 2025, Disney described him as having retired from Apple earlier that year. |
The distinction matters: stepping down as COO and leaving Apple were not the same event.

Who is Sabih Khan?
Khan is a longtime Apple operations executive, not an outside hire. He joined Apple’s procurement organization in 1995 and became senior vice president of Operations in 2019. Apple said he had led its global supply chain for approximately six years before becoming COO.
His responsibilities included:
- Global supply-chain management
- Product quality and planning
- Procurement, manufacturing and logistics
- Product fulfillment
- Supplier-responsibility programs
- Environmental initiatives involving Apple’s suppliers
Before Apple, Khan worked at GE Plastics as an applications-development engineer and key-account technical leader. He earned bachelor’s degrees in economics and mechanical engineering from Tufts University and a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Apple’s full biography appears in its July 2025 announcement.

What Jeff Williams did at Apple
Williams’s importance extended well beyond the COO title. Apple credited him with building and expanding its global supply chain and with playing roles in the iPod and iPhone programs. He also launched Apple Watch, helped shape Apple’s health strategy and led the design organization before the transition.
Williams joined Apple in 1998, according to a later Disney biography, and Apple said June 2025 marked his 27th anniversary with the company. He became COO in 2015 after previously leading worldwide procurement and operations.

His Apple portfolio included:

- Supply-chain development and resilience
- Apple Watch development
- Health and fitness initiatives
- Apple’s design organization during his final period at the company
What changed inside Apple
| Area | During the transition | After Williams’s retirement |
|---|---|---|
| Chief operating officer role | Transferred from Williams to Khan in late July 2025. | Khan continued as COO. |
| Operations | Khan assumed responsibility for supply chain, manufacturing, logistics, quality and fulfillment. | Those functions remained aligned with Khan’s operations remit. |
| Design, Apple Watch and health | Williams continued overseeing them while reporting to Cook. | Apple said the design team would report directly to Cook; Williams had retired. |
Why the succession mattered
Continuity in Apple’s operating machinery
Apple promoted an executive who already understood its suppliers, factories, logistics network and quality systems. That made the handoff an internal continuity move rather than a reset under an external recruit.
A sharper separation between operations and product functions
Williams had combined broad operational responsibilities with oversight of design, Apple Watch and health initiatives. The transition separated those duties: Khan took the COO job, while Williams temporarily retained the product and design-related areas before design moved to Cook.
What is analysis rather than an announced result
It is reasonable to view Khan’s background as signaling a strong emphasis on supply-chain execution and supplier sustainability. However, Apple did not disclose any operational or financial result caused by the change, and the available announcements do not establish that Khan subsequently changed Apple’s strategy.

Williams retired from Apple later in 2025. In a December 9, 2025 announcement, Disney called him a former Apple executive who had served as COO until his retirement earlier that year and nominated him to Disney’s board. The announcement is available as a Disney PDF.
That retirement did not mean Williams left the technology world. It marked the end of his Apple employment; Disney’s board nomination was a separate corporate role.
How this fits Apple’s later leadership succession
In April 2026, Apple announced that Tim Cook would become executive chairman and John Ternus would become CEO effective September 1, 2026. That later event makes Williams’s 2025 departure part of a broader period of leadership change at Apple, but it does not prove that Williams’s retirement was caused by Cook’s succession plan or that Williams was a candidate for CEO.
