Apple Considered Buying Perplexity AI—but No $14 Billion Deal Was Confirmed

Apple executives reportedly considered a Perplexity bid, but no acquisition was announced. The $14 billion figure was a financing valuation, not an offer.

Apple has not announced a $14 billion purchase of Perplexity AI. Bloomberg reported in June 2025 that Apple executives had discussed a possible bid internally, but the talks were described as preliminary, with no formal offer reported. Perplexity said it had no knowledge of current or future acquisition discussions involving the company. The $14 billion figure referred to a reported funding valuation—not an Apple offer—and later 2025 reporting put Perplexity’s valuation at about $18 billion.

What Apple reportedly considered

On June 20, 2025, Bloomberg reported that Apple executives had held early-stage internal discussions about potentially bidding for Perplexity. The reported participants included Apple M&A chief Adrian Perica, Services chief Eddy Cue and executives involved in Apple’s AI work. Bloomberg said the discussions had not advanced to a bid and had not been raised with Perplexity management. Bloomberg’s report and a Reuters account republished by CNA describe consideration, not a transaction.

What Perplexity said—and what remains unconfirmed

Perplexity said it had no knowledge of current or future M&A discussions involving the company, while acknowledging that device makers could be interested in partnerships or evaluating its technology. That distinction matters: a potential commercial partnership is not acquisition negotiation. Fortune India reported the company’s response.

Apple’s and Perplexity’s official materials reviewed through August 18, 2026, do not announce an acquisition. Apple continued to publish Apple Intelligence and Siri updates, while Perplexity’s company updates described it operating independently and adding products and partnerships. The absence of a public announcement does not establish that no private discussions occurred. See Apple’s Apple Intelligence newsroom, its newsroom archive and Perplexity’s company updates.

What the $14 billion figure means

The $14 billion figure was a reported private financing valuation, not a confirmed acquisition price. A financing valuation is not a guaranteed sale price: an eventual deal could involve a premium, stock, earn-outs, investor preferences or retention arrangements. Bloomberg later reported that a financing extension valued Perplexity at approximately $18 billion in July 2025. That is also a reported private-market valuation, not necessarily the company’s value in 2026. Read Bloomberg’s valuation report or its Bloomberg Law version.

A purchase near $14 billion would have been several times larger than Apple’s approximately $3 billion acquisition of Beats, a deal widely described as Apple’s largest. The comparison indicates the scale of the hypothetical transaction; it does not mean Apple was prepared to pay that amount. MacRumors’ coverage discusses the Beats comparison.

Why Perplexity could appeal to Apple

The strategic case would be about more than adding a chatbot. Perplexity combines conversational search, web retrieval, answer synthesis and source presentation in a consumer-facing product, alongside developer and enterprise offerings. Its company updates also show expansion into areas including agentic computing, APIs, health, finance and browser experiences. Perplexity’s updates illustrate why a hypothetical acquisition could involve a broader product and technology portfolio.

  • Search built for AI: Apple could gain an established interface that returns synthesized answers and sources, rather than building every search component itself.
  • Siri and Apple Intelligence: Retrieval and answer-generation capabilities might complement Apple’s own work, potentially supporting more useful answers and follow-up questions. That is a possible use, not a confirmed Apple plan or a guarantee that Siri would improve.
  • Safari: An AI-search option could give Apple a way to differentiate its browser and offer an alternative to conventional search results.
  • Talent and technology: Bloomberg’s reporting framed Apple’s interest partly around acquiring AI technology and talent.
  • Distribution and strategic leverage: Apple controls devices, operating systems and browsers that could put an AI-search product in front of a large installed base. Owning that route could also strengthen its position in negotiations with search and AI partners.

The central possibility is an AI-search layer across Apple’s ecosystem—not an automatic replacement for Google or a ready-made solution to every Siri limitation.

Why Google is part of the story

Apple has historically made Google the default search engine on its devices. The reported acquisition interest was linked to the risk that U.S. antitrust proceedings could weaken or disrupt the arrangement. Media coverage has put Google’s payments to Apple for search placement at roughly $20 billion annually; that is a reported figure, not an amount confirmed here by either company. CNA’s report discusses the search relationship and its reported financial scale.

Buying Perplexity could have served as insurance if Apple’s Google arrangement became less secure. But a search product and a search business are not the same thing. Perplexity would not automatically bring Google’s scale, advertising system, infrastructure or commercial economics, and an acquisition would not by itself eliminate Apple’s reliance on conventional search. Nor does the reported discussion mean Apple intended to remove Google Search from all its devices.

What users might gain—and what could go wrong

If Apple integrated Perplexity’s capabilities, users might get direct, synthesized answers, source links, research tools or more conversational search in Siri and Safari. Apple could also apply its own operating-system and privacy controls to the experience. Those are plausible outcomes, not announced features.

  • Accuracy and trust: AI-generated answers can be wrong or overly confident. Source links help users check claims but do not guarantee a correct summary.
  • Content rights: Search summaries depend on material created by publishers and other sources. Perplexity faces litigation over its use of publisher content, including complaints filed by The New York Times and CNN. A complaint sets out allegations, not a court finding that those allegations are true. See the New York Times complaint and the CNN complaint.
  • Choice and access: Apple could choose to limit some features to its own devices or make its service the default, changing how easily users can choose other search tools.
  • Performance and integration: Cloud processing could bring latency and data-use trade-offs; deeper integration would also have to fit with Siri, Safari, Spotlight, Apple Intelligence and third-party model options.
  • Product continuity: Apple’s review, privacy and platform policies could change how Perplexity’s existing services evolve after an acquisition.

Why Apple might choose a partnership—or no deal

A full purchase is only one possible path. Apple could license technology, sign a search or API partnership, make a strategic investment, acquire selected talent or build more capabilities internally. Perplexity could also remain independent while pursuing partnerships with device makers. The company’s help-center page discusses model availability, but it does not establish any Apple agreement: Perplexity Help Center.

A deal would carry substantial risks for Apple. A venture valuation may not justify an acquisition premium; Perplexity could rely on third-party models or infrastructure rather than a complete proprietary model stack; and Apple could inherit disputes over accuracy, sourcing and content rights. A large acquisition of a prominent AI-search company could also invite regulatory scrutiny. Integrating overlapping services would be difficult, and Perplexity’s economics would not automatically replace Google’s search payments or advertising business. Apple could decide the price and risks outweighed the advantage of acquiring rather than partnering or building.
