ANZ has announced a competitive tender for its external audit, ending KPMG’s 57-year run as the bank’s auditor. KPMG will not be allowed to bid, but it remains the incumbent for now: ANZ expects the tender to finish by April 2027, shareholders to vote on the choice at the 2028 AGM, and the new auditor to begin in FY2029. ANZ attributes the decision to KPMG’s exceptionally long tenure; its announcement does not say the decision was caused by the separate KPMG whistleblower matter.

What ANZ announced

On 2 October 2026, ANZ’s Board announced that it would run a competitive tender to select its next external audit services firm. KPMG has provided that service since 1969. ANZ said that “a tenure of this length is no longer considered appropriate” and that the Board had been considering the issue for some time. ANZ announcement

ANZ also said that KPMG’s Group Lead Audit Engagement Partner and Engagement Quality Control Review Partner were regularly rotated during the firm’s tenure. Despite those partner rotations, ANZ says it is now seeking a different audit firm at the institutional level.

Is ANZ dropping KPMG because of the scandal?

The announcement does not make that connection. ANZ’s stated reason is the length of KPMG’s tenure, and it says the Board considered the timing appropriate given the bank’s transformation agenda and planned integration of Suncorp Bank. Those are the reasons ANZ disclosed; the whistleblower issue is relevant context, not a stated cause of the tender.

On 29 May 2026, KPMG Australia acknowledged that its treatment of a whistleblower and its initial investigation fell short of expectations. KPMG said an external legal review had supported the initial investigation, but the whistleblower’s concerns escalated and a Board sub-committee appointed Allens for a further external legal investigation. KPMG said that investigation was ongoing at the time of its statement. KPMG statement

Separately, on 19 June 2026, the Australian Securities and Investments Commission told a parliamentary committee that it had formal investigations underway concerning KPMG registered company auditors in relation to two distinct issues. An investigation is not a finding of wrongdoing. ASIC described high-quality independent audit as critical to market integrity and informed investor decision-making. ASIC opening remarks

Can KPMG bid to keep the audit?

No. ANZ said KPMG will be ineligible to participate in the tender because of the incumbent’s tenure. The successor has not been named: ANZ’s announcement does not identify a shortlist or disclose the number of potential bidders, selection criteria or fees. The selected firm is still subject to the tender process and shareholder approval.
