Anthropic announced on September 30, 2026, that Claude for Government is generally available to federal and state agencies. The service is described as operating in a FedRAMP High-authorized environment, with prepaid usage, spending caps and agency administration controls. That authorization does not extend automatically to every Claude product: agencies need to match the specific service and hosting environment to their data and compliance requirements.
What is Claude for Government?
Claude for Government is Anthropic’s offering for public-sector agencies. The company says it provides capabilities comparable to those available to commercial customers, within an environment it describes as FedRAMP High authorized. The offering had been in public beta since July 2026; Anthropic announced general availability on September 30, 2026. Anthropic’s announcement describes work with desktop files and the use of skills, plugins and projects for tasks such as memo creation, requests-for-proposals review and casework.
Anthropic also described Claude Code CLI and Claude for Microsoft 365 as rolling out in early access through the same environment and administrative controls. Those tools should not be treated as generally available just because the core government service is generally available. The company says capabilities generally arrive on its commercial release cadence; these are product descriptions, not independent evaluations.
Which government agencies can use Claude?
Anthropic announced general availability for federal and state agencies. It also identifies a California procurement route that may extend to eligible cities and counties through the state’s SITeS agreement. Eligibility for a specific local government is subject to California Department of Technology determinations and current contract terms, not simply its location in California.
#1 Best Overall
California has reported use of Claude-related tools in several agencies. The Department of Technology and Governor’s Office of Emergency Services describe cybersecurity work such as scanning, triage and patching state software. The DMV says it is using the tools to improve customer service and reduce waits, while the Department of Health Care Services describes internal workflows supporting Medicaid administration. California also identifies document drafting and summarizing, information analysis, routine administration and service delivery as intended uses. These examples and expected benefits are government-reported; they do not establish independently measured performance gains or prove that the tools caused shorter waits or other outcomes.
Is Claude for Government FedRAMP High authorized?
Anthropic identifies Claude for Government as a FedRAMP High-authorized service environment and says it can process CUI and FIPS 199 High Impact data. The distinction matters: the company explains that FedRAMP and Department of Defense Impact Levels apply to cloud services, while Claude models are software components deployed within authorized environments. An agency must determine whether the particular service and deployment meet its own requirements. See Anthropic’s government product page for its stated authorization and deployment distinctions.

- Claude Enterprise and the Anthropic Claude API: Anthropic says these are not FedRAMP authorized. Buying either through AWS Marketplace does not change the product’s authorization status.
- Claude through Amazon Bedrock in AWS GovCloud: Anthropic identifies this as a FedRAMP High option and says it supports DoD IL4/IL5 workloads. For ITAR-controlled data, Anthropic points to Bedrock in AWS GovCloud.
- Claude through Google Cloud Vertex AI with Assured Workloads: Anthropic identifies this as a FedRAMP High option, but says Vertex AI is not an IL5 environment.
- HIPAA-related use: Anthropic describes a HIPAA-ready Enterprise/API configuration and the possibility of a business associate agreement for many state and local agencies handling PHI or PII. This is not a blanket authorization; agencies need to confirm the exact configuration and their obligations.
Anthropic says Claude for Government runs on Palantir’s FedStart platform and is listed in the FedRAMP Marketplace under Palantir Federal Cloud Service – Supporting Services. Agencies comparing deployments should check the relevant authorization boundary and provider documentation rather than treating “Claude” as a single security designation.
How do the administration and spending controls work?
Anthropic describes the government service as having no seat fee. Agencies buy prepaid usage in fixed increments, with a hard not-to-exceed cap that prevents spending beyond the obligated balance. No seat fee does not mean free or unlimited usage; the company directs agencies to contact sales for pricing.

- Administrators can set user tiers, model and spending limits, usage visibility, departmental allocations and low-balance alerts.
- Agency identity providers can be connected for sign-on; the announcement also describes SCIM group mappings and layered configuration.
- Usage exports provide metering data, while administrators can review audit logs.
- Anthropic says conversation history remains on the agency-managed device and sensitive operations on its side require two-person approval.
These are company-described features, not independent audit findings. Anthropic’s commercial Enterprise terms are a separate offering and should not be used as a proxy for government pricing.
How can a government agency procure Claude?
Anthropic says agencies can buy Claude for Government directly or through Carahsoft, including through the GSA Multiple Award Schedule and cooperative contracts. California agencies and local governments may have an additional route through the SITeS agreement, subject to eligibility and current terms.

| Route | What the source says | Cost or eligibility point |
|---|---|---|
| Claude for Government, direct or via Carahsoft | Anthropic describes direct purchase and Carahsoft distribution, including the GSA Multiple Award Schedule and cooperative contracts. | Prepaid usage; no per-seat fee or seat minimum; a hard not-to-exceed cap. Exact pricing is not stated on the product page; contact sales. |
| Bedrock in AWS GovCloud or Vertex AI with Assured Workloads | Anthropic identifies both as FedRAMP High options, with the distinct IL4/IL5 and ITAR qualifications described above. | Cloud-hosted usage is generally billed by AWS or Google Cloud; agencies are directed to their cloud account teams. |
| California SITeS agreement | Anthropic names agreement STP-GENAI-26-ANTHROPIC for California state entities and local governments, including cities and counties. | Eligibility is administered by the California Department of Technology. Check current agreement terms before relying on eligibility or pricing. |
California’s Department of Technology said its July 2026 statewide agreement offers state departments a 50% discount through centralized procurement and gives cities and counties access to the same pricing, along with free workforce training, technical assistance and implementation support from Anthropic. The Governor’s Office separately described a 50% discounted price per seat in its June 29, 2026 announcement. Because the two state sources describe the discount differently, do not assume every product, usage charge or SKU is uniformly half price; the agreement governs the actual terms.
