Animoca Brands announced its agreement to acquire Quidd on August 7, 2019—not during the 2021 NFT boom. The deal covered 100% of Quidd for US$5 million upfront, payable in Animoca shares, plus up to US$3 million in profit-based earn-outs. Animoca also announced a separate A$8 million capital raise; that financing was not the purchase price.
Quidd was already a large, licensed digital-collectibles marketplace. The transaction gave Animoca an established collector audience, entertainment partnerships and a working marketplace that could later add blockchain ownership and NFTs.
What Animoca Brands actually bought
Animoca Brands acquired Quidd, Inc. through a wholly owned subsidiary, taking 100% of its issued capital. Animoca described Quidd as a marketplace for buying and selling digital goods, including limited-edition stickers, cards and 3D toys. The announcement is available from Animoca Brands.
The asset was therefore more than a collection of tokens. Its value consisted of licensed intellectual property, an existing collector community, primary drops, secondary-market activity and the operating technology and user behavior around digital collecting. Quidd’s pre-acquisition products were not described as wholly blockchain-based.

Quidd’s reported scale in 2019
Animoca’s August 2019 announcement reported the following company figures:
- More than 2.1 billion individually serialized digital collectibles issued.
- 6.8 million unique users.
- Average monthly active users of 208,000 during the first half of 2019.
- More than US$10 million in total transaction value, described as unaudited.
- Marketplace activity averaging more than six transactions per second.
- Forty-three percent of aftermarket listings selling at the seller’s requested price within 24 hours.
These are dated, company-reported 2019 metrics—not independently audited current figures. Later promotional announcements referred to more than eight million users or collectors, but that number should not be combined with the earlier 6.8 million unique-user figure as though it were a continuous audited count.
The acquisition price was not an $8 million cash payment
The headline maximum was US$8 million, but the structure matters:
| Element | Disclosed term |
|---|---|
| Upfront consideration | US$5 million, approximately A$7.2 million at the announcement’s conversion |
| Payment form | Fully paid Animoca Brands ordinary shares, subject to the deal terms |
| Earn-outs | Up to US$3 million, contingent on Quidd’s profitability |
| Maximum announced consideration | US$8 million |
| Separate Animoca financing | A$8 million strategic capital raise at A$0.20 per share |
The consideration shares were priced at the higher of A$0.16 or the applicable 14-day volume-weighted average price at the effective date. They were subject to a six-month lock-up, followed by staged release at one-twelfth per month, with selling-volume restrictions.

The potential US$3 million earn-out depended on annual net-profit milestones over three years:
Rank #2
- UNIQUE COLLECTIBLE: This trading card captures the dramatic moment of the Donald Trump assassination attempt, memorializing a historic event in a 9cm by 6.4cm high-quality card format, making it a rare and highly sought-after piece among collectors.
- PERFECT GIFT FOR TRUMP FANS: Ideal for avid supporters of Donald Trump, this trading card is a unique and memorable gift, offering fans a tangible piece of Trump's legacy and resilience.
- HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: On July 13, 2024, during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, Donald Trump was targeted in an assassination attempt. As shots rang out, Trump was wounded in the ear but remained undeterred. Amidst the chaos, he shouted, "Fight, fight, fight!" to rally his supporters. This card symbolizes this pivotal moment, appealing to collectors of political memorabilia and cultural artifacts.
- PRISTINE CONDITION: This card retains its mint condition, ensuring its value and appeal to collectors who prioritize high quality collectibles.
- SECURE PROTECTION: Encased in a hard case, this trading card is protected from damage, guaranteeing its longevity and maintaining its pristine condition for years to come. This added layer of protection enhances its value and reassures collectors seeking the highest standards of preservation.
| Earn-out year | Required annual net profit |
|---|---|
| Year one | US$1.25 million |
| Year two | US$1.5 million |
| Year three | US$2 million |
Each period also required Quidd to be at least break-even, so a negative net result would not satisfy the condition. The available disclosures establish the contingent terms, not that every milestone was achieved.
Why the A$8 million raise is easy to misread
The acquisition maximum was quoted in US dollars and related to Quidd. The A$8 million announced on the same day was a separate strategic capital raise for Animoca’s working capital and expansion. It should not be added to, or substituted for, the purchase consideration.
Why Quidd mattered to Animoca’s strategy
Licensed entertainment and sports IP
Animoca said Quidd had relationships covering more than 325 brands, including Disney, Marvel, HBO, CBS, Cartoon Network and the NBA. Licensed characters and teams supplied recognizable content that could attract collectors who had no interest in crypto-native assets.

An audience before the NFT boom
Quidd had already built a mobile collecting habit around serial-numbered digital goods before NFTs became mainstream in 2021. That gave Animoca a consumer-facing entry point instead of requiring it to build a collector base from scratch.
International expansion and blockchain optionality
Animoca planned to localize and expand Quidd in Asia and Europe. Its broader blockchain portfolio also created an option to add verifiable ownership, minting and interoperability to an established marketplace. The strategic bet was to connect familiar licensed merchandise with new forms of digital ownership.

Digital collectible is not automatically an NFT
Quidd’s original in-app items could be serialized and tradable without being blockchain tokens. An NFT, by contrast, is recorded on a blockchain and may be transferable through compatible wallets and marketplaces. Those properties are not interchangeable.
Quidd later promoted a hybrid approach. Its “Mintables” allowed customers to buy with a credit card and choose whether to mint a collectible on-chain, according to the MGA Entertainment partnership announcement. Quidd and Animoca materials also described support for off-chain and on-chain collecting across multiple blockchains.
That model reduced onboarding friction for non-crypto users, but it also creates trade-offs. Off-chain assets can be simpler to use while offering less blockchain portability or independent verification. On-chain minting introduces wallet custody, gas fees, chain compatibility and marketplace-support issues.

Animoca announced that the acquisition was completed on December 3, 2020, on the previously disclosed terms. A later financial filing recorded accounting consideration of $6,056,839 for the completed acquisition. That accounting figure is distinct from the contractual maximum of US$8 million and does not demonstrate that the full earn-out was paid.
After the purchase, Quidd pursued licensed blockchain and digital-collectibles products:
Rank #4
- Sealed Factory packs in great condition
- Possible Hall of Famers and superstars
- Perfect gift for any level collector
- 100 cards in total
- In 2021, Animoca reported the launch of the QUIDD ERC-20 utility token, with US$5 million raised through private sale, pre-sale and an initial decentralized-exchange offering, and a listing on PancakeSwap. Those are historical company-reported details, not a statement about the token’s current price, liquidity or utility.
- In March 2022, Quidd and MGA Entertainment announced L.O.L. Surprise! digital collectibles and NFTs, including optional minting.
- In May 2022, Quidd and Manchester City announced interactive 3D collectible cards.
- In June 2022, The Jim Henson Company announced The Dark Crystal NFTs with Quidd.
- Animoca Brands Japan and Quidd described a customized service for Japanese intellectual property.
- In March 2024, Newcastle United announced a partnership involving digital trading cards, video moments and memorabilia.
The announcements show continued experimentation with licensed, blockchain-enabled collecting. They do not by themselves establish profitability, mass NFT adoption or the performance of every collection.

The strategic upside
- Animoca obtained a functioning consumer marketplace and collector behavior rather than a purely speculative crypto project.
- Recognizable licenses could make digital ownership more approachable than crypto-native art markets.
- Quidd’s off-chain experience offered a lower-friction path for users without wallets or cryptocurrency.
- Animoca could combine Quidd’s audience and licensing relationships with its games, metaverse and blockchain investments.
The risks and limits
- Licensed content depends on contracts, territories and renewal terms.
- Registered users, monthly users and item issuance are not the same as paying users, active traders or NFT owners.
- Share consideration exposes sellers to Animoca’s share-price and liquidity risk.
- The US$8 million figure was a contingent ceiling, not guaranteed cash proceeds.
- Blockchain features can add custody, fees and interoperability problems.
The strongest interpretation is that this was an early bridge between conventional mobile collecting and blockchain ownership. Animoca bought the audience, IP relationships and marketplace first, then pursued on-chain products as the technology and market developed.
What is known about Quidd today
Available company and app references support describing Quidd as an Animoca Brands subsidiary and a digital-collectibles/NFT marketplace. The App Store listing describes buying and selling digital trading cards and other collectibles and displays in-app purchase tiers from approximately US$0.99 to US$59.99. It does not independently verify current functionality, liquidity, withdrawal rules or geographic availability in 2026. See the listing at Apple’s App Store.
Animoca has also referenced the marketplace at market.onquidd.com. Current fees, supported chains and resale liquidity should be checked directly before a purchase. Buying an in-app collectible should not be assumed to be the same as buying a freely transferable NFT.
The Bottom Line
Animoca’s Quidd transaction was a 2019 acquisition of an established licensed digital-collectibles business, structured as US$5 million in shares plus up to US$3 million in profit-based earn-outs. The separate A$8 million financing was not the purchase price. Its significance was strategic: Quidd supplied mainstream collecting, licensed IP and marketplace infrastructure that Animoca could extend toward optional blockchain ownership and NFTs.
