WooCommerce is free, open-source e-commerce software that runs as a WordPress plugin. It adds products, carts, checkout, orders, customer accounts and store management to a WordPress site. You can sell physical goods, downloads, subscriptions, memberships, bookings and services, but advanced product types commonly require extensions.

The central trade-off is straightforward: WooCommerce gives you unusually broad control over your site, data and integrations, while you (or your developer) remain responsible for hosting, updates, security, backups, compatibility and much of the operational setup. The core plugin has no monthly platform subscription or WooCommerce revenue share, but a real store still incurs hosting, domain, payment-processing, tax, shipping, maintenance and possibly extension costs.

Updated August 16, 2026. Menu names, requirements, payment availability and pricing can change; verify them against the linked official documentation when deploying.

What WooCommerce is—and what it is not

WooCommerce is a WordPress plugin, not a separate hosted website builder. WordPress supplies the content-management system and site foundation; WooCommerce supplies commerce functions. The official documentation describes support for physical products, digital downloads, subscriptions, content and appointments, with additional capabilities available through extensions: WooCommerce documentation and developer documentation.

Four pieces people often confuse

  • Self-hosted WordPress (WordPress.org): you select the host, install WordPress and manage the site.
  • WordPress.com: a hosting service with its own plans and administration; its available commerce features depend on the plan.
  • WooCommerce core: the free plugin downloaded from WordPress.org.
  • WooCommerce.com: the company marketplace and services site for extensions, documentation and products such as WooPayments.

“Free” therefore describes the core software license, not the total cost of operating a compliant, reliable store.

What you can sell

  • Simple, variable and grouped physical products
  • Downloadable or virtual products
  • Subscriptions and memberships (normally with extensions)
  • Bookings, appointments, courses and services
  • Donations, wholesale catalogs and business-to-business orders
  • External or affiliate products whose purchase link goes to another site

How WooCommerce works

Your hosting stores WordPress files, the database, orders and customer information. WooCommerce core creates product, cart, checkout, order, coupon, basic tax, shipping and email functions. A theme controls presentation. Plugins and extensions add gateways, recurring billing, marketplaces, accounting, live shipping rates, memberships, analytics and other workflows. Payment gateways are generally WordPress plugins; the provider authorizes and settles money, while WooCommerce records the order. Availability and setup vary by country and business category. See the payments documentation.

That architecture is powerful but not fully managed. You choose hosting, maintain WordPress and extensions, test updates, protect accounts and recover from conflicts. A hosted platform such as Shopify handles more infrastructure for you, usually in exchange for recurring platform costs and less server-level control.

Is WooCommerce right for your business?

It is usually a good fit when you need

  • Control over hosting, data, code and URL structure
  • Deep integration with an existing WordPress content or publishing site
  • Unusual pricing, product, membership or fulfillment logic
  • A large extension ecosystem and the option to change providers
  • Flexibility to avoid a mandatory platform revenue share

Consider another platform when you need

  • Infrastructure, updates and security managed by one vendor
  • A predictable all-in-one bill and minimal technical ownership
  • A small, simple catalog where WordPress would add unnecessary complexity
  • A team without dependable WordPress, PHP or payment support

Questions to answer before choosing

  1. Are you selling physical goods, digital goods, services, subscriptions or a mix?
  2. Who will maintain PHP, WordPress, plugins, backups and security?
  3. Which countries, currencies and payment methods must work?
  4. How complex are tax, shipping, inventory and returns?
  5. Will traffic be steady, seasonal or campaign-driven?
  6. Who handles fulfillment, refunds, fraud review, customer service and reconciliation?

What WooCommerce costs

Plan the total cost of ownership rather than stopping at the plugin’s $0 download.

Cost category What to budget for Qualification
Core plugin Free No WooCommerce platform subscription or revenue share; payment providers still charge their own fees.
Hosting $25–$350 per month for most stores Broad official estimate at WooCommerce pricing; larger or high-traffic stores may require more.
Domain Purchased separately in most cases Check renewal, transfer, ownership and privacy terms rather than relying on an introductory price.
Extensions Commonly $29–$299 per year per extension Some are free; third-party vendors use different prices and renewals.
Payments Per-transaction processing Rates vary by country, card, currency, method, disputes and conversion.
Operations Variable Theme or development work, tax and shipping services, email delivery, backups, security, accounting and support may apply.

WooPayments is pay-as-you-go with no setup or monthly fee, but transaction, international, conversion and dispute fees can apply and availability is country- and business-dependent: WooPayments. Do not treat one processor’s rate as a global price.

Requirements before installation

Technical baseline

Check the deployment-time requirements rather than trusting an old tutorial. WooCommerce documentation recommends PHP 8.3 or newer, MySQL 8.0 or newer or MariaDB 10.6 or newer. Its documented compatibility table includes lower minimum versions (PHP 7.4, MySQL 5.6 or MariaDB 10.1), but older software may be unsupported or out of security maintenance: PHP, WordPress and database requirements. A WordPress.org snapshot viewed for this guide listed WooCommerce 10.9.4, WordPress 6.9 or higher, PHP 7.4 or higher and more than seven million active installations; those figures change with releases.

Use HTTPS, a supported database, sufficient memory and a host offering backups, staging and useful support. Confirm your theme and planned extensions support the WooCommerce version you will install.

Business preparation

  • Define products, prices, margins, SKUs and inventory ownership.
  • Decide where you sell and ship, including currencies and fulfillment locations.
  • Choose payment methods and check provider restrictions for your business category.
  • Write return, refund, cancellation, warranty, privacy and delivery policies.
  • Determine tax obligations with a qualified professional; software does not decide whether you owe tax.

How to install WooCommerce

  1. Log in to WordPress and open Plugins > Add New.
  2. Search for WooCommerce, select the official plugin and click Install Now.
  3. Click Activate, then follow the onboarding wizard or open its setup checklist.

The documented alternative is Plugins > Add New > Upload Plugin: download the ZIP from the official source, upload, install and activate it. Full instructions are at installing and uninstalling WooCommerce.

Activation adds store administration, product and order data structures, pages, customer/shop-manager roles and related functionality. If installation fails, check server versions, memory and permissions; disable a suspected plugin, test a compatible default theme, inspect WordPress/WooCommerce logs and restore a backup if production was damaged. Deactivating or deleting WooCommerce does not automatically erase all store data; complete removal requires an additional configuration step.

Complete the onboarding wizard

The current flow asks for store location, name, product or service type and business stage. It may offer optional features and a Jetpack/WordPress.com connection. The resulting checklist covers adding products, payments, store customization, tax, shipping where applicable and launch: setup wizard documentation.

Do not install every recommendation automatically. Each extension adds update, compatibility, security and renewal decisions; enable a feature when you can name the business requirement it solves.

Configure the store in WooCommerce > Settings

Current documented tabs include General, Products, Tax, Shipping, Payments, Accounts & Privacy, Emails, Integration, Site visibility and Advanced. Extensions and themes may add others: settings documentation.

General

Set the store address, selling and shipping locations, default customer location, currency, taxes, coupons and Coming Soon mode. Currency, address and location choices affect displayed prices, tax rules and available gateways.

Products and inventory

Choose shop and product-display pages, review behavior, stock management, low- and out-of-stock thresholds, downloadable-file handling, attributes and variations.

Accounts and privacy

Decide whether guests may check out, when accounts are created, how long personal data is retained, and how privacy notices, export and erasure work.

Emails

Set sender details, customer and administrator notifications and templates. Test delivery; use SMTP or a transactional-email service if ordinary hosting mail is unreliable.

Advanced

Confirm cart, checkout, account and terms pages. Review REST API, webhooks, HPOS and any experimental product-editor features. Test extension compatibility before enabling newer storage or editing systems.

Add products customers can understand

Choose the product type

  • Simple: one item with no selectable variation.
  • Variable: variations such as size or color, each potentially with its own price, SKU and stock.
  • Grouped: existing products presented together.
  • External/affiliate: purchase proceeds to another site.
  • Virtual: no shipping required.
  • Downloadable: files delivered after purchase.

Normally provide a name, full and short descriptions, price, image, category, SKU, stock status, tax status, shipping details and download permissions where relevant. Attributes and variations must be tested individually. WooCommerce’s product documentation is at products documentation.

Product-quality checklist

  • State exactly what the buyer receives, including quantity, dimensions, materials and compatibility.
  • Use consistent, original images and explain processing and delivery time.
  • Distinguish out of stock, backordered and made-to-order items.
  • Test every variation, coupon interaction and digital-download permission with a customer account.
  • Do not promise inventory accuracy when another system is the source of truth unless synchronization is verified.

Set up payments safely

A gateway connects checkout to a processor; the processor authorizes, captures and settles funds. Options can include cards, wallets, PayPal, bank transfer, cash on delivery and buy-now-pay-later methods where supported. Recurring products require a gateway and extension that support recurring payments.

Compare gateways by

  • Country, currency and business-category eligibility
  • Cards, wallets and in-person support
  • Recurring billing, payout timing and separate merchant-account requirements
  • International-card, conversion, dispute and chargeback costs
  • Hosted, embedded or redirected checkout and webhook reliability

Before launch, ensure test mode is off, HTTPS is working, webhooks are not blocked by caching or security rules, and your business is approved. A “successful” checkout can still be pending if settlement or a webhook fails. A WooCommerce refund may also require confirmation that the provider actually processed and settled the refund.

Configure taxes without confusing software with tax advice

Enable tax rates and calculations at WooCommerce > Settings > General, then configure classes, rates, display and shipping treatment at WooCommerce > Settings > Tax. Prices may be entered or displayed inclusive or exclusive of tax, depending on your market. Manual tables, destination-based rules, exemptions and automated services all require accurate business and customer data.

WooCommerce calculates according to your configuration; it does not determine whether you must register, collect or remit sales tax, VAT, GST or another levy. Obligations vary by jurisdiction, product, customer status, nexus and fulfillment location. Consult a qualified tax professional: tax setup documentation.

Configure shipping and fulfillment

Define shipping zones, flat rates, free-shipping thresholds, local pickup and shipping classes. Add package dimensions and weight, handling time, tracking, return instructions and international customs information. Virtual products should not trigger shipping.

Label printing and live carrier rates are different functions. Additional extensions may be required to display live USPS or DHL rates in cart and checkout: shipping documentation and WooCommerce Shipping & Tax.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Check that coupons do not accidentally defeat free-shipping thresholds.
  • Use shipping classes for products with different handling or package costs.
  • Explain duties, taxes, customs delays and international returns.
  • Provide pickup windows and instructions when local pickup is offered.
  • Plan for split shipments, dimensional weight and failed live-rate responses.

Design a store that works on phones

Choose a maintained theme that supports responsive product archives, variations, cart, checkout and account pages. Check accessibility, keyboard navigation, performance, documentation, block-editor compatibility and the ability to customize safely with a child theme or supported mechanisms. WordPress compatibility alone does not guarantee WooCommerce compatibility. Test checkout on a phone, not just the home page.

SEO, analytics and marketing

Use descriptive product titles, complete copy, useful categories, canonical URLs, structured data, internal links and sensible filter/indexing rules. Add consent-based email capture, coupons, abandoned-cart workflows and attribution that matches your privacy obligations. WooCommerce does not create search visibility automatically.

For Google for WooCommerce, requirements include a valid domain, secure checkout, visible payment methods, refund and return policies and contact information: Google requirements.

Security, maintenance and performance

  • Use HTTPS, strong unique administrator passwords, two-factor authentication and least-privilege roles.
  • Keep WordPress, PHP, WooCommerce, themes and extensions supported and updated.
  • Maintain tested, off-site backups and stage major updates before production.
  • Use malware monitoring, appropriate firewall protection and audit logs.
  • Review privacy retention, data export and erasure procedures.

Risk comes less from a raw plugin count than from abandoned, unsupported, duplicated or poorly coded components. Cart, checkout, account and other personalized pages are dynamic and must not be cached like ordinary content. Hosting decisions should consider PHP workers, database performance, object caching, backups, staging, support, seasonal traffic and order volume—not storage alone. Large catalogs, complex filters, subscriptions and high order volumes increase database and PHP work. HPOS may improve order-data handling, but verify every extension before enabling it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run operations deliberately

An order being created is not the same as money being captured or settled. Train staff on the difference between payment authorization, capture, processing, completion, refund initiation and refund settlement. Reconcile provider payouts with WooCommerce orders.

  • Review failed and suspicious orders before fulfillment.
  • Record internal notes and customer communications.
  • Verify stock reduction, partial refunds, cancellations and return handling.
  • Export orders and remove personal data according to policy when required.
  • Test administrator and customer email notifications.

Pre-launch test matrix

  1. Open every product and variation on desktop and mobile.
  2. Add, remove and change quantities in the cart.
  3. Apply valid, invalid and boundary-case coupons.
  4. Verify tax for representative customer locations and shipping classes.
  5. Test paid shipping, free shipping, pickup and a failed live-rate response.
  6. Run a successful payment, declined payment and interrupted checkout in test mode.
  7. Confirm order status, stock reduction, customer email and administrator notification.
  8. Issue a full and partial refund and verify provider settlement.
  9. Test guest checkout, account creation, password reset and privacy notices.
  10. Deliver a digital file to a test customer and check access permissions.
  11. Check return, refund, terms, privacy, contact and delivery pages.
  12. Verify analytics, search indexing, backups and restoration procedures.
  13. Disable test mode, confirm live credentials, then place a controlled real order if appropriate.

WooCommerce versus alternatives

Option Strength Trade-off
WooCommerce Control, customization, WordPress integration and open-source core You manage hosting, updates, security and compatibility.
Shopify Hosted operations and polished onboarding Recurring platform cost, app costs and less infrastructure control.
Wix eCommerce Beginner-friendly hosted site builder Less extensible for technically complex commerce.
BigCommerce Hosted platform with substantial built-in commerce features Different pricing and integration model, with less WordPress-native flexibility.
Squarespace Commerce Design-led experience for smaller catalogs Less suited to complex products, fulfillment or integrations.
Easy Digital Downloads Focused digital-product workflow Less natural for physical inventory and shipping.
Magento/Adobe Commerce Deep enterprise capabilities Higher implementation cost and complexity.

Compare operational ownership, payment availability, tax and shipping complexity, catalog size, integrations and support capacity—not just license price.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
