Its AMD Partner Network (APN) formalizes support for that indirect route, while authorized distributors, value-added resellers (VARs) and add-in-board (AIB) manufacturers perform distinct jobs in the product chain.
How AMD’s two routes to market work
AMD describes selling through both a direct sales force and independent distributors. The two routes are complementary: strategic relationships address large or specialized deployments, while channel partners extend availability and service to a broader range of customers and regions. AMD says it is increasingly focused on VARs that resell OEM systems to mid-market and small and midsize business (SMB) buyers.
| Comparison | Strategic or direct relationships | Indirect channel |
|---|---|---|
| Typical customer | Multinational and selected regional OEM accounts, hyperscale data centers, and selected global or local system integrators. | Mid-market and SMB buyers, as well as customers reached through distributors, sub-distributors, OEMs, ODMs, system integrators and retailers. |
| Transaction and configuration | Suited to complex deployments involving platform validation, supply planning, custom designs, software integration or deployment support. | Distributors and resellers extend the sale of products and OEM systems; VARs can serve buyers through those OEM systems. Specific configuration or service capabilities vary by partner and are not stated uniformly by AMD. |
| Inventory and product flow | AMD says hyperscalers may buy directly or indirectly through OEM, ODM and custom-hardware arrangements; inventory ownership is not stated as a universal feature of direct deals. | AMD says authorized distributors typically carry inventory and resell to sub-distributors, OEMs, ODMs and other customers. AIBs turn AMD component graphics products into board-level products for system integrators, retailers and sub-distributors. |
| Reach and speed | Focused on selected large accounts and deployments; a standard delivery speed or geographic coverage is not stated. | Provides a broader route through regional distributors and downstream sellers; AMD does not state a uniform delivery speed or coverage for every partner. |
| Reporting and channel risk | Specific reporting requirements for direct transactions are not stated in the cited materials. | APN membership has requirements including point-of-sale reporting. AMD warns that gray-market diversion can produce shadow inventory, weaken forecasting and put pressure on margins. |
These are channel roles, not a guarantee that every customer or product follows only one route. AMD says hyperscale data centers buy server CPUs, GPU accelerators, DPUs, FPGAs and Adaptive SoCs either directly or indirectly through OEM, ODM and custom-hardware arrangements. Global system integrators may resell OEM systems together with their own software and services to enterprise, high-performance-computing and cloud-service-provider customers. (AMD, 2024 Form 10-K.)
What distributors, VARs and AIB manufacturers do
Authorized distributors
Distributors are an upstream link in the indirect channel. AMD says authorized distributors typically hold inventory and resell products to sub-distributors, OEMs, ODMs and other customers. Their role is different from AMD’s direct strategic-account work: they provide a route for products to move through a wider network of buyers and sellers.

VARs
A VAR sells a product or system onward and may add value through selection, configuration or services. In AMD’s stated channel focus, the key point is that VARs resell OEM systems into mid-market and SMB segments. That is the clearest distinction from buying a component directly or purchasing through an upstream distributor.
AIB manufacturers
AIB manufacturers take AMD component-level graphics products and build board-level products. Those boards then reach system integrators, retailers and sub-distributors. This is a separate stage of product flow, not another name for a distributor or VAR.

What the AMD Partner Network provides
AMD announced a restructured AMD Partner Network on October 8, 2025. It brings sales training, go-to-market resources, incentives and operational information into a shared repository. AMD describes foundational support for all members, with enhanced benefits, co-marketing opportunities and access to strategic initiatives for Silver, Gold and Platinum members.
Named resources include Arena sales training, Meet the Experts webinars, newsletters and a seller toolkit. In 2025, AMD reported a 40% year-on-year increase in channel investment and said it had engaged 520 partners across its client, cloud and server portfolios. Those are AMD-reported figures for 2025, not a measure of each partner’s sales or a guarantee of future investment.

APN membership tiers
| Tier | What AMD’s materials establish |
|---|---|
| Registered | Named as an APN tier in the program guide. Exact annual threshold, reporting cadence and benefits are not stated in the available guide details. |
| Silver | Named as a tier; Silver members are included with Gold and Platinum in AMD’s description of enhanced benefits, co-marketing opportunities and strategic initiatives. Exact annual threshold and reporting cadence are not stated here. |
| Gold | Named as a tier and included in the enhanced-benefits group. Exact annual threshold and reporting cadence are not stated here. |
| Platinum | Named as a tier and included in the enhanced-benefits group. Exact annual threshold and reporting cadence are not stated here. |
AMD’s 2025 program guide associates membership tiers with annual thresholds, NDA/AIPA and point-of-sale reporting requirements, and training capabilities. It said 2026 business-unit thresholds would be communicated in Q4 2025. Because precise current thresholds and reporting schedules are not established here, a prospective partner should verify the latest guide and applicable business-unit terms with AMD rather than rely on an assumed tier qualification.
How a reseller can pursue AMD partnership
APN is the formal partner program to investigate if a reseller wants AMD training, enablement or potential co-marketing and incentive support. AMD’s current requirements may depend on tier and business unit, so treat the following as a practical route to confirm eligibility, not a promise of acceptance or particular benefits.
Rank #4
- Identify the relevant business and region. Clarify whether the business sells client, cloud, server or other AMD products, and which geography and customer segment it serves.
- Check current APN entry requirements. Confirm the applicable tier threshold, NDA/AIPA terms, point-of-sale reporting obligations and training requirements with AMD; the 2025 guide does not establish the current precise values here.
- Confirm the operating commitment. Ensure the business can meet any required reporting and training processes before choosing a tier or planning around program benefits.
- Verify benefits in writing. Ask which enablement, co-marketing, incentive or strategic-program opportunities apply to the business’s tier and product area. AMD describes enhanced benefits for Silver, Gold and Platinum, but availability and specific terms should be confirmed.
How to find an authorized AMD distributor
AMD maintains a public distributor directory covering regional partners for desktop and server CPUs, data-center and consumer graphics, professional graphics, embedded processors, cooling and memory. Use it to identify a distributor relevant to both the product category and geography, then confirm directly that the relationship and stock status remain current before ordering. AMD cautions that the directory is updated quarterly and may not reflect a distributor’s current status or availability.
Why authorized-channel status matters
Buying outside authorized routes does not by itself prove that a product is counterfeit or defective. It does make provenance and handling harder to establish. AMD identifies gray-market diversion as a risk because it can introduce counterfeit or mishandled products, create shadow inventory, weaken forecasting and pressure channel margins. Buyers should verify the seller’s authorization and the product’s origin rather than treating a familiar product name or low price as proof of a reliable supply chain.

For business buyers, the issue extends beyond authenticity: unclear product flow can complicate inventory planning and support expectations. For a reseller, unauthorized sourcing can also make it harder to substantiate the channel status required for a formal partner relationship.
