AMC stock and AMC debt carry different risks, not a simple safe-versus-risky choice. Common shareholders face volatile prices, dilution and the possibility of losing their residual claim; debt investors have instrument-specific payment and repayment claims but still face default, refinancing, market-price and recovery risks. AMC reported $3,914.2 million of corporate borrowings by principal at June 30, 2026, with $3,202.8 million scheduled to mature in 2029. Those figures make liquidity and repayment capacity central to evaluating either security, but do not predict a default or establish what any bond would recover.
Is AMC stock riskier than AMC bonds?
It depends on what “riskier” means. AMC common stock has direct exposure to share-price swings and new share issuance, and common equity is a residual claim on the company. Debt generally has contractual payment terms and may rank ahead of common stock, but payments can be missed or delayed, a bond can fall in market value, and recovery in a restructuring depends on the specific instrument and the value available to creditors.
What can hurt AMC shareholders
AMC said its common shares had experienced, and might continue to experience, “extreme volatility.” In its 2026 Form 10-Q, the company reported a year-to-date NYSE intraday range of $0.93 on March 27 to $2.96 on June 22. This is a historical range reported in the filing, not a current quote or a range through October 4. The filing also reported 892,604,638 common shares outstanding as of July 22, 2026; the count may have changed since then. AMC 2026 Form 10-Q
Existing owners can also be diluted if AMC issues additional shares. The company disclosed that future share issuance could be used for liquidity, debt repayment or refinancing, among other purposes, and could reduce existing holders’ ownership interests. Some AMC debt is exchangeable and may also result in common shares being issued.

What can hurt AMC debt investors
Debt terms vary by issue. The risks can include missed or delayed payments, difficulty refinancing principal when it comes due, price declines before maturity and uncertainty about recovery after a default or restructuring. For debt with fixed-rate payments, market yields can also affect the price an investor can sell for before maturity. An advertised coupon is not the same as a guaranteed investment return: the price paid, payment performance and any eventual recovery matter too.
What do AMC’s reported debt and liquidity figures show?
The latest company quarterly filing in this comparison covers the six months ended June 30, 2026. AMC reported corporate borrowing principal of $3,914.2 million at that date; principal is not the same as the debt’s carrying value on the balance sheet. Its scheduled maturities were concentrated in 2029:

| Scheduled period | Principal due |
|---|---|
| Six months ending December 31, 2026 | $137.5 million |
| 2027 | $23.9 million |
| 2028 | $23.7 million |
| 2029 | $3,202.8 million |
| 2030 | $120.4 million |
| 2031 | $405.9 million |
These are amounts in AMC’s June 30, 2026 maturity schedule, not estimates of the amount it will ultimately pay after any future refinancing or changes to the debt. The concentration makes the company’s ability to generate cash and refinance relevant to debt holders as well as shareholders. AMC 2026 Form 10-Q
Liquidity is more than the cash balance
AMC reported $778.4 million in cash and equivalents at June 30, 2026. It separately reported a $901.0 million working-capital deficit excluding restricted cash. The company said working capital included operating lease liabilities and deferred revenues, so that deficit should not be read as a direct measure of cash immediately due to lenders. Restricted cash should not be added to cash and equivalents as though it were freely available.
Rank #3
For the six months ended June 30, 2026, AMC generated $106.9 million of net cash from operating activities, compared with using $231.6 million in the same period of 2025. The company attributed much of the year-over-year improvement to attendance, ticket prices, food-and-beverage spending per patron, advertising and working-capital timing. One six-month result does not establish that the cash generation will recur. AMC 2026 Form 10-Q
High rates do not remove repayment risk
At June 30, 2026, AMC reported a 10.639% rate on $1,984.2 million principal of Muvico Term Loans and a 15.0% rate then in effect on $903.4 million principal of New 2029 Notes. The loan rate can move with reference rates and leverage terms; the New 2029 Notes’ reported rate depended on the leverage ratio. These are terms reported for those instruments at that date, not a current quote or a rate applicable to all AMC debt. A high coupon may compensate investors for risk, but it does not itself establish that principal will be repaid or that a buyer’s total return will be positive.
Rank #4
Are AMC bonds safer because they rank ahead of stock?
Debt can have a contractual claim ahead of common equity, but “AMC bonds” is not one uniform claim. Priority, collateral, guarantees, covenants, payment mechanics and exchange rights depend on the specific issue. Do not assume every AMC note is secured or has the same rank. AMC’s capital-stock description says common shareholders share ratably in assets available to common holders after any preferred-stock claims are paid; that does not specify the ranking of each debt security. AMC Description of Capital Stock, published February 23, 2026
If a company restructures or enters insolvency proceedings, creditors’ claims are addressed under applicable law and the terms and priority of the relevant obligations; common shareholders remain residual claimants. Being a creditor does not guarantee full or timely payment: available value may be insufficient, claims can have different priorities, and a security’s market value can fall well before any formal process. The filings establish no independent probability of default or valuation of recovery for a particular AMC bond.

Refinancing can extend a maturity but does not by itself fix a weak cash-generation outlook. In a February 2026 prospectus supplement, AMC warned of “the possibility that the extension of certain debt maturities will not provide enough time for attendance and revenues to increase to sufficient levels and generate net positive cash flows from operating activities to overcome liquidity concerns.” AMC Form 424B5 prospectus supplement, dated February 9, 2026
What should a retail investor check before comparing an AMC share with a note?
Start with the actual security being considered, not a general description of “AMC debt.” The company’s reported balances and share count are dated, and market prices and yields change. The issuer filings provide reported company information, not an independent credit rating or individualized investment recommendation.
Quick Recap
- For a share: check the current share count and any subsequent issuance disclosures, cash and operating cash flow in the latest filings, and the company’s liquidity and restructuring risk disclosures. Treat historical price volatility as evidence of past movement, not a forecast.
- For a note or bond: identify the exact issue and CUSIP, issuer and guarantors, seniority, collateral, covenants, coupon, maturity, and any cash/PIK, call or exchange features. Verify the current market price and yield for that specific security rather than relying on its stated coupon.
- For either security: compare the investment’s time horizon and potential loss with your own capacity to bear risk. The source filings do not determine which security is appropriate for an individual investor.
