All three missions flew in 2025, carrying 24 satellites apiece. Amazon has since renamed the program Amazon Leo and announced 10 additional Falcon 9 launches.
What Amazon’s SpaceX deal covered
The agreement was for three Falcon 9 missions to deploy Amazon’s satellites—not a joint satellite-network venture or an agreement to combine Kuiper with SpaceX’s Starlink service. Amazon said the launches would add capacity to its broader deployment campaign and were targeted to begin in mid-2025. The company did not disclose the contract value. Amazon’s December 2023 announcement described the missions as part of a multivehicle approach intended to reduce scheduling risk.
At the time, Amazon called the project Kuiper. It renamed the program Amazon Leo on November 13, 2025; the original mission names still use the Kuiper-era “KF” designation. Amazon’s program page describes Leo as a low-Earth-orbit network planned to include more than 3,000 satellites.
Why Amazon hired a direct competitor
Amazon was building a satellite broadband service to compete with Starlink, which SpaceX operates. The apparent contradiction is resolved by separating two markets: Amazon and SpaceX compete for satellite-internet customers, while SpaceX sells launch services to other satellite operators. Amazon bought access to Falcon 9 capacity; it did not buy access to Starlink or announce a technology partnership.

Falcon 9 was an established rocket with a frequent launch cadence. Using it gave Amazon another route to orbit while its other contracted vehicles entered service and its satellite deployment schedule advanced. Contemporary coverage also emphasized the rivalry and the regulatory timetable facing Kuiper. Investing.com’s December 2023 report said Amazon faced a requirement to deploy roughly half its initial constellation by July 30, 2026. That deadline was widely reported at the time; the controlling FCC authorization and any amendments are the appropriate sources for the exact legal milestone.
All three missions flew in 2025
Amazon’s launch-status record shows that the original three-mission block was completed. Each flight carried 24 satellites from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, for 72 satellites in total.

How Falcon 9 fit into Amazon’s launch strategy
The three SpaceX flights were a supplement, not Amazon’s main launch plan. Amazon had assembled a large multivehicle manifest to deploy a planned 3,236-satellite constellation. Its earlier agreements included launches on ULA Atlas V and Vulcan Centaur, Arianespace Ariane 6, and Blue Origin New Glenn.

- Gen 3 Satellite Dish: Third-generation antenna delivers a stronger, more stable signal and faster performance.
- Wi-Fi 6 Router: Modern router technology supports faster speeds, increased device capacity, and better efficiency.
- Extra 150FT Cable Included: Extended reach for more flexible installation in large spaces or hard-to-access locations.
- High-Speed, Low-Latency Internet: Stream HD content, video conference, or work remotely with confidence.
- Ideal for Rural and Remote Areas: Perfect for homes, cabins, RVs, boats, and off-grid setups where wired internet isn’t available.
Amazon’s 2022 announcement covered up to 83 launches across ULA, Arianespace, and Blue Origin, with options for additional missions; it also had an earlier agreement for nine ULA Atlas V launches. The company said those agreements were intended to provide capacity for most of the planned constellation. See Amazon’s launch-investment announcement and its breakdown of the 83-launch procurement.
Using several providers spreads schedule risk, but it also means the program depends on multiple rocket programs and launch schedules. Falcon 9 added an operational option; three flights alone could not deploy a constellation numbering in the thousands. Amazon also built satellite-processing capacity in Florida: its facility report describes a 100,000-square-foot site designed to process more than 100 satellites per month at full capacity. Amazon’s facility report gives those figures.

What changed after the original agreement
The 2023 contract was not the last SpaceX capacity Amazon announced. In 2026, Amazon said it had secured 10 additional Falcon 9 launches. That is separate from the original three-launch agreement; Amazon’s announcement is the source for the additional commitment. Amazon’s 2026 launch-rate update describes the expansion.
Amazon later said it had secured more than 100 launches across five rocket types: ULA Atlas V, Arianespace Ariane 6, SpaceX Falcon 9, ULA Vulcan Centaur, and Blue Origin New Glenn. This is a figure for secured launches across the manifest, not a count of completed missions. Amazon’s launch and satellite update provides the current manifest context.
