Amazon’s Planned 2,000-Employee Move From Seattle to Bellevue: What Happened

Amazon’s planned shift of 2,000 employees from Seattle to Bellevue was underway, not confirmed complete. As of October 5, 2023, GeekWire reported that about half had moved and more than 1,000 were working in Bellevue’s 555 Tower. Amazon said additional employees would move to West Main Tower One later that year; the available updates do not establish how many ultimately completed the transfer.

How many Amazon employees moved from Seattle to Bellevue?

The 2,000 figure described the planned scale of the move, not a verified final count. GeekWire’s October 5, 2023 report said about half of that group had moved by then, with more than 1,000 employees working at 555 Tower. Amazon said additional employees would move into West Main Tower One later in 2023, but that statement was a plan, not confirmation that every planned move took place. GeekWire’s October 2023 report does not give a final completion total.

Which Bellevue towers were part of the plan?

555 Tower

Amazon confirmed to GeekWire that more than 1,000 employees were working in 555 Tower, at 555 108th Ave. NE, by October 2023. At the time, construction had reached the building’s 19th floor of 42, while interior buildout on the remaining floors was still pending.

West Main Tower One

Amazon identified West Main Tower One as a destination for additional employees later in 2023. GeekWire also reported that AWS employees were being assigned to the Bellevue locations over the following months. Neither statement confirms the ultimate number of employees who moved into that tower.

How do later Bellevue office openings fit in?

Amazon later announced openings for two Bellevue offices, Sonic and Dynamo. The company described Dynamo as more than 300,000 square feet for over 1,500 employees, and Sonic as a 19-floor building with more than 400,000 square feet. Those later announcements do not identify Sonic and Dynamo as the same destinations as 555 Tower and West Main Tower One in the 2023 shift report. Amazon’s account of the Sonic and Dynamo openings also quoted Bellevue Mayor Lynne Robinson calling the company’s investment a “vote of confidence” in the city, its talent pool and quality of life.

Is Amazon leaving Seattle?

No. The reported employee shift was between offices in the Seattle-area region, not evidence that Amazon was leaving the region. Amazon describes Puget Sound as its West Coast headquarters and continues to describe growth in both Bellevue and its Seattle campus. Its current HQ1 page reports more than 11,000 employees in Bellevue and says the company plans 25,000 jobs there. These are Amazon-reported figures: the 25,000 is a future jobs plan, and neither figure confirms how many of the specific 2,000 planned transfers were completed.

What was the context for Amazon’s Bellevue expansion?

Amazon’s account of its Eastside expansion said it planned to bring 25,000 jobs to the area and expected two new Bellevue buildings to provide space for more than 2,000 employees. The company also acknowledged that growth could increase pressure on housing affordability and transportation. It described transit-oriented offices, free ORCA cards and the Amazon Ride shuttle program as ways to support commuting. These are Amazon’s descriptions of its plans and programs, not independent findings about their effect on housing or commute outcomes. Amazon’s Bellevue and Eastside account provides that company context.

The move was reported amid a pause in construction on several Bellevue office towers and a period of weakness in the Eastside office market, according to GeekWire’s 2023 coverage. King County’s 2023 commercial assessment discussed Amazon’s paused construction and its nonrenewal of a Seattle lease in the context of hybrid work and broader office-market change. That dated context does not, by itself, establish why Amazon planned this employee shift, which teams or individuals were selected, or whether every employee relocated. King County’s 2023 commercial report covers the broader local market context.
