Deal status (evidence dated August 18, 2026): unverified. Amazon’s $799 MacBook Air offer was a real promotion reported on September 15, 2025, but that does not confirm the price is still available. The original deal covered a 13-inch MacBook Air with Apple’s M4 chip, 16GB of unified memory and a 256GB SSD. The advertised “save up to $500” applied to a different, higher-capacity 15-inch M3 configuration—not the $799 M4 model.

What “save up to $500” actually meant
The maximum saving was attached to a separate closeout model: a 15-inch MacBook Air with an M3 chip, 24GB memory and 512GB SSD. Its reported sale price was $1,199, or $500 below the cited reference price. Amazon and B&H were named as retailers in the original report.
That $500 figure should not be used to describe the $799 M4. The M4 discount was $200.

Is an M4 Air still a good buy in 2026?
At $799 for a new 16GB model
Yes, provided the listing is genuinely new, carries a normal U.S. warranty and return policy, and is sold by Amazon or a reputable seller. Sixteen gigabytes gives substantially more multitasking headroom than an 8GB listing, while the M4 remains suitable for schoolwork, office applications, coding, browsing, video calls and everyday creative work.

The compromise is storage. A 256GB SSD can work for cloud-first users, but large photo, video, game and developer libraries may require an external drive or a 512GB configuration.
At $900 to $1,000
The value case is less clear. Apple’s listed 13-inch M5 Air starts at $1,099 with 16GB memory and 512GB storage. That gives the M5 newer-generation hardware and twice the base storage for a higher price. See Apple’s 13-inch M5 purchase page for the current configuration and checkout price.

Near the M5 price
If an M4 configuration is within roughly $100–$150 of a new M5 Air, the M5 is generally the stronger long-term purchase because it is the current generation and includes 512GB at its listed base configuration. That is a buying judgment, not a claim about benchmark results.

M4 Air versus MacBook Neo
Apple lists the MacBook Neo from $699 with an A18 Pro chip, 8GB memory, 256GB storage, up to 16 hours of battery life and a 13-inch Liquid Retina display: Apple’s comparison page.
| Choose the M4 Air when… | Choose the MacBook Neo when… |
|---|---|
| You regularly keep many apps and browser tabs open. | Your work is mainly browsing, documents, streaming and email. |
| You want 16GB memory and two Thunderbolt 4 ports. | The lowest possible Apple laptop price matters most. |
| You expect to use external displays or heavier creative and developer tools. | You can accept 8GB memory and more limited hardware. |
Refurbished alternatives
Apple Certified Refurbished pages have shown 13-inch M4 Air configurations with 16GB memory and 256GB storage at $849, and a separate education-store page has shown $759. Those are historical price signals, not confirmed August 2026 offers. Check availability directly at Apple’s Certified Refurbished Mac store.
Apple says Certified Refurbished Macs undergo a refurbishment process and include a one-year limited warranty and 14-day return policy; AppleCare eligibility may apply. A refurbished Apple unit can be preferable to an unknown marketplace seller when the prices are close.
Amazon checklist before you place the order
- Verify the exact configuration. Confirm 16GB memory, 256GB or 512GB storage, the M4 chip and the stated GPU. Do not rely on “M4 MacBook Air” in the title alone.
- Check condition. Make sure the selector says new, not renewed, used or refurbished.
- Inspect the seller and fulfillment. Record “Sold by” and “Ships from,” since marketplace assignments can change.
- Check the final price. Apply any on-page coupon and include tax, shipping, membership requirements and other checkout charges.
- Confirm the return policy and warranty. A short or unclear return window can erase the value of a low headline price.
- Check regional details. Imported units can have different keyboard layouts, chargers, warranty coverage or return arrangements.
- Review delivery and color. One color may be discounted while another is not, and delivery dates can differ.
Who should buy the discounted M4?
- Students and home-office buyers who find a genuinely new 16GB model around $799.
- Mac users who need more memory headroom than the 8GB MacBook Neo provides.
- Buyers comfortable managing a 256GB drive with cloud storage or an external SSD.
- Shoppers who value portability but still want two Thunderbolt 4 ports and support for external displays under Apple’s stated connection conditions.
Who should skip it?
- Anyone whose listing has 8GB memory or does not clearly state the configuration.
- Buyers receiving a renewed or marketplace unit without a meaningful discount.
- People who need 512GB or more internally and do not want external storage.
- Shoppers paying close to $1,099, where the M5’s newer platform and 512GB base storage become more compelling.
- Users seeking workstation-class sustained graphics performance rather than a thin, fanless everyday laptop.
Bottom line
The $799 M4 MacBook Air deal was real, but it was a September 2025 promotion and is unverified as a live August 2026 offer. If Amazon shows a new 13-inch M4 with 16GB memory and 256GB storage for $799 from a trustworthy seller, it remains a strong budget Mac purchase. The “up to $500” saving belonged to a separate 15-inch M3 with 24GB memory and 512GB storage. At $900–$1,000, compare carefully with Apple’s $1,099 13-inch M5 Air; near that price, the M5 is usually the better value.
