Amazon did not announce plans to fire 600,000 employees. The figure referred to internal projections, described in secondary reporting, that automation could allow Amazon to avoid hiring more than 600,000 additional U.S. workers by 2033, including roughly 160,000 by 2027. The robotics announcement itself, made on October 22, 2025, introduced two different systems: Blue Jay and Project Eluna. Amazon later said it stopped using Blue Jay in operations on February 25, 2026, while continuing to expand its broader robotics program.
What Amazon announced in October 2025
Amazon’s announcement covered a physical robotic system and an artificial-intelligence operations tool—not one machine that would replace a fixed number of employees.
| System | What it is | Intended use | Latest reported status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blue Jay | Multi-arm robotic system | Pick, stow and consolidate items | Amazon said it was no longer used in operations as of February 25, 2026 |
| Project Eluna | Agentic AI system | Identify bottlenecks and recommend staffing or workflow responses | Piloted for sortation operations |
Blue Jay
Amazon described Blue Jay as a system coordinating several robotic arms. It combined picking, stowing and consolidation work that had previously required three separate robotic stations. The stated design goal was to reduce reaching and lifting while supporting faster processing at same-day delivery sites.
Amazon said Blue Jay was tested in production at a South Carolina facility and could handle approximately 75% of the item types stored at its sites in that test. That is an item-type measure, not a claim that 75% of Amazon jobs, facilities or overall work had been automated. Amazon also said the system was developed in slightly more than a year using artificial intelligence, digital twins, existing robot data and simulation. (Amazon’s announcement and status update)

Project Eluna
Project Eluna is software rather than a physical robot. Amazon said it combines historical and real-time facility data to identify bottlenecks and recommend operational responses. In a Tennessee fulfillment-center pilot, an example recommendation could be moving workers to a process likely to become constrained.
That makes Eluna a decision-support system, not evidence that an algorithm independently manages an entire warehouse or makes final staffing decisions without people.
What the “600,000 jobs” figure means
The 600,000 figure came from internal documents and interviews described in reporting attributed to The New York Times. A secondary summary said the documents projected that automation could let Amazon avoid hiring more than 600,000 additional U.S. workers by 2033, with approximately 160,000 fewer hires by 2027. Avoided hiring is not the same as layoffs. A layoff removes an existing employee. Avoided hiring means a company grows output without adding as many workers as it otherwise might have. The available evidence does not establish a confirmed 600,000-person firing plan, nor does it identify a number of workers supposedly displaced by Blue Jay.

Amazon’s October 2025 organizational-reduction announcement also does not establish that robotics caused a 600,000-person warehouse workforce reduction. (Amazon’s workforce-reduction update)
Why the distinction matters to workers and investors
Automation can affect employment without producing an immediate mass layoff. A facility may process more packages with the same headcount, hire fewer seasonal workers, or shift positions from general warehouse work to maintenance, controls, software, quality control and exception handling.

Amazon’s public argument is that robotics reduces repetitive reaching and lifting, improves ergonomics and creates technical work. The company says next-generation facilities require 30% more employees in reliability, maintenance and engineering roles, a company estimate that should not be treated as an independent labor-market measurement. (Amazon’s fulfillment-center robotics claims)
The labor-displacement concern can still be valid at the same time. A robot may make an individual task safer while reducing the number of people needed per package. Technical jobs may pay more but require training that incumbent workers do not yet have. Fewer temporary or entry-level openings can also affect communities even when Amazon’s total workforce does not immediately shrink.

Blue Jay is no longer an operational system
Amazon’s current page says that, as of February 25, 2026, it was no longer utilizing Blue Jay in operations. Amazon added that the underlying technology would continue supporting employees elsewhere in its network. The update means the original “Amazon debuts Blue Jay” framing is now historical; it does not show that Amazon abandoned robotics or prove that Blue Jay failed technically.

Blue Jay’s place in Amazon’s wider robotics strategy
Blue Jay was one step in a broader sequence of automation projects:
- Vulcan: A robot designed to use touch-related sensing while picking and stowing. Amazon reported that Vulcan could handle approximately 75% of item types, a separate claim that should not be automatically applied to Blue Jay. (Amazon’s Vulcan explanation)
- One-millionth robot and DeepFleet: In June 2025, Amazon said it had deployed its one-millionth robot. It also announced DeepFleet, an AI model intended to coordinate robot movement and improve fleet travel efficiency by 10%, according to Amazon. (Amazon’s DeepFleet announcement)
- Proteus: In June 2026, Amazon announced a next-generation Proteus mobile robot and further European robotics investment. Proteus is part of the continuing automation program, not a relaunch of Blue Jay. (Amazon’s Proteus announcement)
Robots perform best with predictable inventory, controlled layouts and standardized processes. People remain important for irregular or fragile items, jams, damaged goods, replenishment, quality checks, safety interventions and maintenance. Older buildings may also be harder to automate than facilities designed around robotics.

- Hiring per package and per fulfillment center, rather than Amazon’s total employee count alone.
- Permanent versus seasonal staffing at highly automated sites.
- Direct employees versus contractors.
- Job postings for reliability, controls, robotics and maintenance roles.
- Whether training programs lead to actual internal transfers.
- Changes in productivity targets, injury rates and exception-handling work.
Amazon says Career Choice and robotics apprenticeships support movement into higher-skilled roles and that more than 700,000 employees globally have been upskilled through its programs. Those figures do not guarantee placement or protect every warehouse position. (Amazon’s employee-upskilling information)

The bottom line on Amazon’s robotics and jobs
The real story is not a confirmed 600,000-person layoff. It is a potential long-term reduction in hiring as Amazon tries to increase output with fewer workers per unit of work. Blue Jay was withdrawn from operations, but Amazon’s investment in robotics, AI coordination and autonomous systems continues. For workers, that can mean safer tasks and new technical opportunities alongside fewer entry-level openings and greater pressure to acquire specialized skills.
Frequently Asked Questions
Did Amazon announce 600,000 layoffs?
No. The reported figure concerned potential future U.S. hires Amazon might avoid adding by 2033, not a confirmed plan to dismiss 600,000 current employees.
Is Blue Jay still operating in Amazon warehouses?
Amazon said it was no longer using Blue Jay in operations as of February 25, 2026, while continuing to use the underlying technology elsewhere in its network.
What is Project Eluna?
Project Eluna is an agentic AI system designed to analyze facility data, identify bottlenecks and recommend operational responses; it is not a physical robot.
