Short answer: Amazon announced on February 17, 2023, that most corporate and technology employees would work from an assigned office at least three days a week starting May 1, 2023. Leadership teams generally selected the office days, replacing a more flexible, director-led system. That three-day rule is now historical: Amazon announced a broader five-day office expectation in September 2024, effective January 2, 2025.
What Amazon changed in February 2023
Andy Jassy’s February 17, 2023 announcement required most corporate employees whose jobs could be performed remotely to work from their assigned office “the majority of the time”—defined as at least three days each week—beginning May 1, 2023. The announcement is available from Amazon.

This was a company-wide minimum, not a promise that employees could freely pick any three days. Leadership teams were generally expected to determine which days colleagues came in so that groups could work together. The change also marked a move away from Amazon’s earlier practice of letting director-level leaders decide whether teams worked mostly remotely, in a hybrid arrangement, or mainly in an office.
Which Amazon workers were covered?
| Worker or role | How the 2023 rule generally applied |
|---|---|
| Corporate and technology employees | Main population covered when the role was considered suitable for regular office work. |
| Fulfillment, warehouse, transportation, store and other frontline staff | Usually already worked at sites or under schedules not comparable to corporate hybrid work. |
| AWS data-center staff, hardware engineers and device-development roles | Physical-work requirements meant they were not treated as ordinary remote-capable corporate jobs. |
| Some sales and customer-support roles | Amazon identified certain positions as exceptions that could remain mostly remote. |
| Employees with approved remote arrangements | Could continue under the terms of their approved exception, subject to later policy changes. |
Accordingly, describing the announcement as a mandate for every Amazon employee is inaccurate. Role requirements, office assignment, country rules and approved arrangements all mattered.

What policy came before the three-day mandate?
Amazon’s 2021 return-to-office approach gave director-level leaders discretion to decide how their teams worked. It did not establish one uniform number of office days. Amazon said teams could be mostly remote, hybrid or mostly office-based depending on customer and team needs. Its earlier guidance is documented at Amazon’s workplace site.
The February 2023 decision centralized a baseline: most covered corporate employees would spend at least three days in an office, with leadership setting the practical schedule.
Why Amazon said it wanted more office time
Amazon presented the policy as a conclusion from its pandemic-era experience, not as a published scientific finding that office work always produces better results. Jassy said in-person work made it easier to:

- Teach and learn from colleagues, especially for newer employees.
- Build and reinforce Amazon’s culture.
- Collaborate and brainstorm on complex work.
- Maintain stronger connections across teams.
- Invent and solve problems through spontaneous interactions.
He pointed to conversations that continue after meetings or happen informally in hallways as useful to innovation. Those are Amazon’s stated reasons; their effect can vary by role, manager, task and team.
Exceptions and flexibility under the 2023 approach
The three-day baseline had qualifications. Amazon’s guidance said some roles could remain remote or mostly remote, and employees could seek approval to work in an office fewer than three days per week. The earlier formal guidance required vice-president approval for such an exception. Details appear in Amazon’s hybrid-work guidance.
- An approved lower in-office requirement generally meant the employee was treated as primarily remote and used an agile, non-dedicated workspace.
- Eligible corporate employees could work fully remotely from another U.S. location for up to four weeks per year under the then-current guidance, subject to conditions.
- Employees whose roles had already been primarily remote before the pandemic could remain remote in some cases.
- A team could designate particular mandatory office days; “three days” did not necessarily mean any three days chosen by the employee.
An informal manager accommodation was not the same as a documented remote-work exception, and the 2023 rules should not be assumed to carry over unchanged to the later five-day policy.

What the change meant for employees
Commute, care and relocation
Workers faced additional commuting time and transportation costs. Employees who had moved during the remote-work period, or arranged childcare and eldercare around home working, could face relocation or scheduling pressure if their assigned office was far away.
Office and desk logistics
Large-scale returns raised practical questions about office capacity, assigned locations and whether workspaces were available on required days. Conditions could differ by building, country and team; a reported delay or shortage at one site did not establish a company-wide exception.

Employment and workplace relations
The policy also affected recruiting, retention, morale and employee relations. Some employees argued that focused coding, writing or analysis could be more efficient in quiet remote settings. Others viewed a fixed requirement as undermining arrangements made in reliance on remote work. Claims that the mandate was designed to make people resign are interpretations, not an established fact.

Employee resistance and enforcement
The 2023 announcement prompted objections and protests. Amazon later emphasized that employees were expected to follow the three-day requirement. In August 2023, Jassy said workers who refused to comply might not have a future at the company, according to reporting by the Associated Press. That enforcement discussion was separate from the question of whether a particular employee had an approved exception.

On September 16, 2024, Amazon announced that corporate employees would generally return to an office five days per week, effective January 2, 2025. Jassy described the change as a return to an office model resembling Amazon’s pre-pandemic approach. See the official announcement.
The later policy still recognized limited circumstances, including illness, a child’s illness, household emergencies, customer travel or short periods requiring isolated work, as well as approved remote-work arrangements. Amazon also described assigned desks in some U.S. headquarters and agile desks in some European locations. Local implementation and employment law can affect how the general expectation operates.

How to interpret the timeline
- 2021: Amazon’s flexible approach let director-level leaders determine team arrangements.
- February 17, 2023: Amazon announced a minimum of three office days for most covered corporate and technology employees.
- May 1, 2023: The three-day expectation was scheduled to begin.
- August 2023: Jassy publicly stressed compliance after employee resistance.
- September 16, 2024: Amazon announced a generally five-day corporate office expectation.
- January 2, 2025: The five-day expectation became active.
For anyone reading the 2023 headline today, the key distinction is date: three days explains Amazon’s major post-pandemic tightening in 2023, but it is not the latest general corporate policy.
The Bottom Line
Amazon’s February 2023 decision replaced team-by-team discretion with a three-day office minimum for most remote-capable corporate and technology employees. Exceptions depended on role and approval, and leadership generally chose the office days. Amazon later superseded that rule with a five-day expectation effective January 2, 2025.
