That was a real $35 reduction—about 22%—but it is a historical price, not a verified August 2026 offer. Check the retailer listing before buying.

| 32GB Paperwhite Signature Edition | $149.99 | $199.99 | $50 |
The Verge reported the promotion across Amazon, Best Buy, and Target during Amazon’s October Prime Day event. Retailer conditions could differ, including Target Circle requirements, seller identity, color availability, shipping, and stock. The folio cover shown in coverage was not included.
The Verge characterized the $124.99 offer as the Paperwhite’s first-ever discount and first price drop of 2025. Those are historical observations from that report, not a permanent MSRP change. A conflicting image caption called the saving $25; the published prices calculate to $35 off.
What you were getting for $124.99
The discounted unit was the black, 16GB, ad-supported Kindle Paperwhite 12th Generation (2024 release). Amazon lists a 7-inch glare-free E Ink display at 300 pixels per inch, adjustable brightness and warm light, USB-C charging, Bluetooth support for Audible, and approximately 5 × 7 × 0.3-inch dimensions at about 7.4 ounces. It carries a one-year limited warranty and is also offered in Raspberry and Jade. See the Amazon product page.

Battery estimate
Amazon’s “up to 12 weeks” figure assumes 30 minutes of reading daily, wireless turned off, and the light set to 13. More reading, wireless use, higher brightness, warm light, or Bluetooth Audible streaming can shorten runtime.
Water resistance
The Paperwhite is IPX8-rated. Amazon says its laboratory test immersed the device in up to 2 meters of fresh water for 60 minutes. That rating is not a recommendation to submerge it; salt or chlorinated water, soap, drops, charging-port exposure, and physical damage can create risks.

Which Paperwhite configuration makes sense?
| Model | What changes | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 16GB with ads | Sponsored screensavers on the lockscreen; 16GB storage | Lowest upfront cost and mostly text-ebook readers |
| 16GB without ads | Same core hardware without sponsored lockscreen images | Gift buyers or anyone who wants a clean lockscreen |
| 32GB Signature Edition | No ads, 32GB, wireless charging, auto-adjusting front light | Frequent Audible users, large offline libraries, and buyers valuing convenience |
Lockscreen ads do not appear inside books while you read. Ad removal does not change Kindle Store pricing, account requirements, or ebook DRM. Kindle Unlimited and Prime reading benefits are separate services, not included automatically with the device.
Is 16GB enough?
For ordinary ebooks, 16GB is ample; Amazon says it can hold thousands of books, although file sizes vary. Audiobooks use substantially more space, making the Signature Edition’s 32GB capacity more useful for heavy Audible listeners.

Was the Signature Edition the better historical value?
At the reported promotion prices, the Signature Edition cost only $25 more than the ad-supported standard model. That premium bought double the storage, no lockscreen ads, wireless charging, and an auto-adjusting front light. If you wanted any two of those features, the Signature model was arguably the stronger October 2025 purchase. Readers who mainly store text ebooks and do not mind sponsored screensavers still saved the most with the $124.99 standard version.
Who should buy a Paperwhite—and who should wait?
Good fit
- First-time Kindle buyers seeking a waterproof, monochrome reader.
- Readers who value a 7-inch, 300ppi display, warm light, and long battery life.
- People primarily reading text ebooks rather than illustrated material.
Reasons to skip or delay
- Current Paperwhite owners may find the 12th-generation upgrade incremental.
- Color comics, magazines, and illustrated books are better suited to the Kindle Colorsoft.
- Handwriting and note-taking require a Kindle Scribe.
- Anyone seeing this article after October 2025 should not assume $124.99 is available.
How to evaluate the listing if the price returns
- Confirm the exact configuration says 16GB with ads, rather than ad-free, Signature Edition, refurbished, or a different storage tier.
- Check the seller and fulfillment, delivery date, color, return policy, and whether membership conditions apply.
- Verify that the price is for the Kindle alone; a case is an additional purchase.
- Compare the ad-free and Signature prices. A small gap can make the Signature Edition the better value.
- Check the date and currency. The reported figures were U.S. prices from October 2025 and are not a live August 2026 quote.
