Most eligible Amazon returns remain free, and the charge is not a general fee imposed by UPS.
What Amazon’s rule actually says
Amazon’s current U.S. policy is location-based. The UPS Store option is generally free unless Amazon identifies another free participating location that is closer to your delivery address. In a small number of cases, the UPS Store choice then displays a $1 fee. Amazon describes this as a return-option rule, not as a universal UPS charge. The wording matters: “UPS” in headlines often refers to The UPS Store, the retail drop-off option named by Amazon. The announcement does not say that every UPS shipping counter, UPS pickup, or UPS-shipped return carries the fee.
When will you see the $1 charge?
The closer-free-option test
Amazon compares the UPS Store with other free options near the delivery address for that order. The comparison is not necessarily based on where you currently are, where you work, or which store is most convenient today. Taking the package to another city or selecting a store near your office may not change Amazon’s result.

The choice is shown before you confirm
Start from Amazon’s Returns Center or the Your Orders page, select the item and reason, and review the available locations. Amazon says the return choices and any applicable charge are presented during this selection process. There is no single, permanent button label for the fee-bearing choice; wording can vary by item, account, location and eligibility. Confirm the final return summary before submitting it.
It is not a printer, QR-code or packaging fee
Eligible label-free returns can use a QR code at participating locations without a printer, shipping box, tape or printed label. Amazon’s stated trigger for the $1 is the availability of a closer free option—not whether you lack a printer or choose a QR code.

How to return an item without paying the fee
- Open Your Orders or the Returns Center in your Amazon account and choose the eligible item.
- Select the applicable return reason and continue to the location list.
- Compare the participating free choices Amazon displays. Select a free option rather than The UPS Store if that location works for you.
- Generate the QR code, bring the item and code to the selected location, and hand it over for scanning. For eligible label-free returns, no box or printed label is required.
- Keep the drop-off confirmation until Amazon credits your refund.
If Amazon offers only a fee-bearing UPS Store choice, the item may not have another qualifying location nearby, or the item’s eligibility may differ from another item in the same order.
Which locations can appear?
Amazon’s March 25, 2026 update says more than 10,000 U.S. drop-off locations support eligible free, label-free, box-free returns, including more than 1,500 FedEx Office locations nationwide. The list can include:

An option appears only when Amazon considers it available for that particular return. A nearby store can therefore appear for one item and not another.
Why Amazon is steering some returns away from UPS Stores
Returns create costs beyond the initial shipment: packages must be consolidated, transported to return centers, inspected and then resold, repaired, liquidated, donated or recycled. Amazon’s public explanation focuses on that operating process. Industry coverage has described the $1 choice as a way to steer customers toward lower-cost or more convenient locations, but Amazon has not published a per-return cost formula or said that the dollar is simply a UPS pass-through charge. What has not changed
Amazon says it continues to offer free returns on most items delivered in the U.S. Check the “FREE Returns” badge under the product price before ordering; eligibility can also depend on the item, seller, reason for return and location. Amazon’s published returns information identifies Get Product Support on eligible orders, but that button is a support route, not the control that starts a standard return.
Common misunderstandings
- “Every UPS return costs $1.” Not according to Amazon’s current statement. The possible charge is limited to a small number of cases involving The UPS Store and a closer free alternative.
- “UPS is charging customers.” Amazon describes the condition in its own return-option system; the announcement does not establish a general UPS corporate fee.
- “The QR code causes the fee.” Eligible QR-code returns can be free and label-free. The stated factor is the closer free location.
- “The fee always applies once per item or once per order.” Amazon has not published a universal billing unit. Review the final return summary for the specific order.
Why two items in one order can show different choices
Return options are evaluated per item. Amazon says eligibility and nearby participating locations determine what appears, so one product can show a free UPS Store option while another shows a $1 UPS Store choice or different drop-off sites. Do not assume that selecting one location for the whole order gives every item the same price or options.

What to check before you submit
- Is the item marked or otherwise shown as eligible for free returns?
- Does the location label specifically say The UPS Store?
- Is a $1 amount displayed beside that choice in the return summary?
- Is another free participating location offered for this item?
- Will you be returning from the delivery-address area, or are you relying on a location elsewhere?
- Have you saved the QR code and selected the location you can actually visit?
Bottom line for shoppers
The headline “Amazon charges for UPS returns” is too broad. In the current U.S. policy, The UPS Store can cost $1 only in limited cases where Amazon says a closer free option exists. Check the choices and final price in the Returns Center for each item; choose an available free partner when practical, and remember that eligible returns can still be completed without a box, tape, printer or label.
