On April 30, 2024, Amazon reported first-quarter revenue of $143.3 billion, up 13% year over year, and diluted earnings per share of $0.98. Those results exceeded the contemporary analyst estimates of about $142.7 billion in sales and $0.83 in EPS, while operating income more than tripled from a year earlier. Amazon shares initially rose about 5% in after-hours trading.
The report was historical: it covered the quarter ended March 31, 2024, not Amazon’s current 2026 stock price or valuation.
The Q1 2024 earnings beat in numbers
Amazon’s results were reported for the quarter ended March 31, 2024. The estimate comparison below uses figures cited in contemporary coverage; consensus numbers can vary by provider.

Why investors pushed the stock higher
The after-hours gain reflected the market’s interpretation of the entire report rather than one isolated number. Revenue and EPS beat the cited estimates, operating income was dramatically higher than a year earlier, AWS growth accelerated, and advertising continued to expand quickly. Management also described continuing demand for generative-AI services in AWS.
The approximately 5% move was an initial after-hours reaction on April 30, 2024, not a permanent change in Amazon’s value or a current share-price reference.
AWS supplied the biggest strategic signal
AWS generated approximately $25.04 billion of revenue, up 17% year over year. AWS operating income reached about $9.42 billion. Dividing that operating income by reported AWS revenue implies an operating margin of roughly 37.6%.
At that quarterly revenue level, AWS represented an annualized revenue run rate of roughly $100 billion. The result suggested that customers’ cloud-cost optimization phase was easing and that some larger projects were returning, including projects associated with generative AI. Amazon did not say that AI alone caused the full 17% increase, so AI demand should be treated as a contributor and management theme—not a quantified explanation for all AWS growth.

Advertising added a second high-growth engine
Advertising-services revenue rose approximately 24% to $11.8 billion. Amazon’s advertising category is broader than retail-media advertising alone and reflects monetization across the company’s marketplace, consumer services and media properties. Advertising generally has stronger margins than conventional retail sales because Amazon can monetize existing customer traffic without selling another physical product.
Amazon had launched advertising on Prime Video, but the quarter’s results do not establish that this placement alone drove the increase, and the 24% rate should not be projected indefinitely.

Why operating income mattered more than sales alone
Consolidated operating income increased from approximately $4.8 billion to $15.3 billion. That improvement indicates operating leverage, not merely top-line expansion. Likely contributors included fulfillment-network utilization, cost reductions, AWS profitability and advertising growth, alongside changes made after Amazon’s pandemic-era expansion and restructuring.
No single initiative explains the entire consolidated change: the figure combines retail, AWS, advertising, logistics and corporate costs. Strong companywide profit therefore does not mean every retail operation improved equally.
AI opportunity versus infrastructure spending
Amazon positioned AWS to benefit from generative-AI workloads. Around the same period, AWS highlighted Amazon Bedrock’s access to multiple foundation models and announced general availability of Amazon Q Developer. AWS also announced Amazon Q Business; related April announcements are listed in AWS’s April 2024 updates.
That opportunity requires substantial investment. CFO Brian Olsavsky indicated that full-year capital expenditures would rise meaningfully from approximately $48.1 billion in 2023, primarily for infrastructure such as data centers, networking and AI-related capacity. More capacity can support future AWS revenue, but it can also pressure near-term free cash flow. Amazon discussed a multibillion-dollar AI business run rate, but it did not disclose a standalone audited generative-AI revenue line.

Q2 guidance was more mixed than the headline beat
Amazon forecast second-quarter 2024 net sales of $144 billion to $149 billion and operating income of $10 billion to $14 billion. The sales range was described as slightly below some Wall Street expectations, while the broad operating-income range reflected uncertainty around consumer demand, labor and fulfillment costs and investment spending.
That combination matters: a company can beat the quarter just completed while offering a less aggressive forward outlook. The historical after-hours reaction therefore should not be read as proof that investors had fully accepted Amazon’s longer-term AI strategy.
What investors can monitor
This report alone cannot establish whether AMZN is cheap or expensive. A valuation judgment requires the current share price, forward earnings estimates, free-cash-flow expectations and comparable-company assumptions. Investors evaluating subsequent reports can focus on:
- AWS year-over-year growth and operating margin.
- Capital expenditures and free cash flow as AI infrastructure expands.
- Advertising growth and the profitability of the broader services mix.
- North American retail operating margin and fulfillment efficiency.
- Management’s disclosures about AI demand and any separately quantified AI revenue.
Possible bullish interpretation
AWS growth could continue to reaccelerate as AI workloads expand, while advertising scales and improved retail margins persist.

Possible bearish interpretation
AI infrastructure spending could weigh on cash flow, cloud competition could limit growth, consumer demand could weaken, or the AWS rebound could fail to last.
