Amazon stock jumped about 6% after hours on Q3 2024 earnings: Revenue reached $158.9 billion

Amazon’s Q3 2024 earnings beat revenue, EPS and operating-income expectations, sending shares about 6% higher after hours. The quarter also brought 19% AWS growth, improving retail profitability and a slightly cautious Q4 outlook.

Amazon shares rose approximately 5.7% to 6% in extended trading on October 31, 2024, after the company reported third-quarter 2024 results. The quarter ended September 30, 2024; these are historical figures, not Amazon’s latest results. Net sales rose 11% year over year to $158.9 billion, GAAP net income reached $15.3 billion, diluted earnings per share was $1.43, and AWS sales increased 19% to $27.5 billion.

The reaction reflected beats on revenue, EPS and operating income, plus improving retail profitability. AWS remained strategically important, although its 19% growth was broadly in line with expectations rather than a major upside surprise. Amazon’s fourth-quarter revenue outlook was slightly below analyst consensus at the midpoint.

What Amazon reported in Q3 2024

Amazon announced the results on Thursday, October 31, 2024, for the quarter ended September 30. The $15.3 billion figure is GAAP net income—not operating income or free cash flow.

Metric Q3 2024 Q3 2023 Year-over-year change
Net sales $158.9 billion $143.1 billion 11%
Net income $15.3 billion $9.9 billion 55%
Diluted EPS $1.43 $0.94 Higher
Operating income $17.4 billion $11.2 billion 56%
AWS sales $27.5 billion $23.1 billion 19%
AWS operating income $10.4 billion $7.0 billion 49%

Amazon’s reported 11% sales growth includes a favorable foreign-exchange effect in the year-over-year comparison, according to its earnings release.

For context, revenue is sales. Operating income is profit from operations before non-operating items and taxes. Net income is the bottom-line accounting profit after those items. Free cash flow is cash generated after capital expenditures, so it is not interchangeable with net income.

Why the stock moved higher

Reuters reported that Amazon’s $158.9 billion revenue exceeded the roughly $157.20 billion analyst average, while $1.43 EPS topped expectations of $1.14. Operating income of $17.4 billion was also above the company’s prior guidance range and the approximately $15 billion-to-$16 billion expectation cited in coverage.

  • Revenue beat: Sales modestly exceeded consensus.
  • Profit beat: EPS and net income rose much faster than revenue as margins improved.
  • Operating leverage: Higher sales, lower payroll-related costs and lower depreciation and amortization helped operating income, partly offset by technology-infrastructure investment, according to Amazon’s Form 10-Q.
  • Broader improvement: North America profitability strengthened and International operations returned to profitability.

The reported move was in after-hours or extended trading after the regular session had ended. It should not be described as a 6% gain during the normal trading day, and a single earnings reaction is not a reliable long-term valuation signal.

AWS was highly profitable, but not the only catalyst

AWS sales rose 19% year over year to $27.5 billion, while AWS operating income increased to $10.4 billion from $7.0 billion. Dividing the reported segment figures by consolidated totals shows that AWS represented roughly 17% of sales but about 60% of operating income in the quarter—an inference from Amazon’s published numbers, not a separate company measure.

That profit contribution explains why investors watch AWS even when its growth is merely in line with expectations. Reuters-linked coverage characterized 19% AWS growth as broadly consistent with forecasts, so the after-hours response cannot be attributed to an AWS beat alone. Consolidated operating profit, retail margins and the overall earnings surprise also mattered.

AI opportunity and infrastructure cost

Amazon was investing heavily to expand cloud and generative-AI capacity. The Associated Press reported more than $30 billion of capital expenditures in the first half of 2024, with most directed toward AWS infrastructure. Reuters-linked coverage said Amazon expected approximately $75 billion of full-year 2024 capital expenditures, up from $48.4 billion in 2023.

  • KEEP YOUR HOME COMFORTABLE - Control compatible smart home devices. Just ask Alexa to turn on lights or touch the screen to dim. Create routines that use motion detection to turn down the thermostat as you head out or open the blinds when you walk into a room.

Those investments may support future AWS demand, but they also increase depreciation and can weigh on free cash flow if utilization or monetization falls short. The quarter’s profit does not prove a specific return on AI spending.

Retail, advertising and marketplace businesses added to the result

Business Q3 2024 sales Year-over-year change
North America $95.5 billion 9%
International $35.9 billion 12%
AWS $27.5 billion 19%

Amazon’s earnings were broader than a cloud-only story. North America sales grew 9%, International sales grew 12%, and International operations returned to profitability. Advertising sales were approximately $14.3 billion, up 19% year over year and narrowly above expectations in Reuters coverage. Third-party seller services, subscriptions and advertising increasingly complement first-party product sales, although they should not be grouped together as AWS.

What Amazon guided for Q4 2024

Amazon forecast fourth-quarter net sales of approximately $181.5 billion to $188.5 billion, implying year-over-year growth of about 7% to 11%. The $185 billion midpoint was slightly below the roughly $186 billion analyst consensus cited by Reuters.

Markets assess both the quarter just reported and management’s next-quarter outlook. In the initial after-hours reaction, the strong Q3 beats outweighed the modestly cautious midpoint, but the guidance remained an issue for investors to monitor through the holiday quarter.

What investors should separate when reading the headline

  • Historical versus current: The figures belong to Q3 2024. Amazon subsequently reported Q3 2025 sales of $180.2 billion, net income of $21.2 billion and AWS sales of $33.0 billion, so the 2024 numbers should not be presented as current performance. See Amazon’s Q3 2025 release.
  • Profit versus cash: $15.3 billion is GAAP net income; it does not state how much cash remained after capital spending.
  • AWS growth versus AWS economics: The 19% number is sales growth. AWS’s operating income shows why the segment has an outsized effect on consolidated profitability.
  • After-hours price versus investment result: Extended-hours liquidity and market conditions can differ from the next regular session and do not guarantee a lasting gain.

Key indicators to watch after the report

  • AWS sales growth and operating margin, particularly whether AI demand accelerates.
  • Capital expenditures, depreciation and free cash flow as data-center investment rises.
  • North America and International operating margins.
  • Advertising and third-party seller-services growth.
  • Holiday-quarter demand relative to the Q4 sales range.
  • Whether AI infrastructure generates sufficient utilization and revenue to justify its cost.

The Bottom Line

Amazon’s Q3 2024 report was a strong operational quarter: revenue, EPS and operating income beat expectations, retail profitability improved, and AWS produced a disproportionate share of operating profit. The roughly 6% gain happened after hours on October 31, 2024—not during the regular session. Investors still had to weigh AWS growth that was broadly in line with forecasts, a Q4 revenue midpoint below consensus and sharply higher infrastructure spending.
