Yes, Amazon ended the standalone physical-store formats behind Amazon Go and Amazon Fresh. Amazon announced the decision on January 27, 2026. The affected network comprised 57 Amazon Fresh stores and 15 Amazon Go stores—72 locations in all, according to Amazon figures reported by Axios.
Most locations were scheduled to close by February 1, although California stores stayed open longer to meet state requirements. This did not end Amazon Fresh grocery delivery, Whole Foods Market, or Amazon’s wider grocery business.
What exactly did Amazon close?
The shutdown covered Amazon-branded standalone stores, not every grocery service connected to Amazon.
| Format or service | Status |
|---|---|
| Amazon Go | Standalone convenience stores closed under the announced plan. |
| Amazon Fresh physical stores | Supermarket-style locations closed under the announced plan. |
| Amazon Fresh online | Continued where delivery or pickup is available. |
| Whole Foods Market | Continued operating and became Amazon’s main physical-grocery expansion vehicle. |
| Third-party grocery partners | Continued separately from Amazon’s own stores. |
Amazon said various former sites could be converted to Whole Foods Market stores, but it did not say every location would receive that treatment. As of August 18, 2026, Amazon’s announcement establishes the closure strategy, not an independently verified final operating date for every individual store.

Amazon Go was associated with small-format cashierless shopping. Amazon Fresh stores were larger grocery locations carrying perishables, prepared foods, household essentials and other supermarket items.
How many stores were affected?
Amazon confirmed the figures reported by Axios: 57 Amazon Fresh stores plus 15 Amazon Go stores, or 72 locations total. The count applies to Amazon’s own physical Go and Fresh stores, excluding Whole Foods and independent retailers whose products can be ordered through Amazon.
When did the closures happen?
- January 27, 2026: Amazon announced the shutdown and its shift toward Whole Foods, delivery and new formats.
- February 1, 2026: Most locations were expected to close.
- California: Stores remained open longer because of state requirements, as reported by The Associated Press.
That schedule should not be read as proof that every store stopped trading on exactly February 1; local notices and legal requirements affected individual sites.
Why did Amazon close the stores?
Amazon’s stated explanation
In its announcement, Amazon said the formats had shown encouraging signals but had not produced a sufficiently distinctive customer experience or an economic model suitable for large-scale expansion. The company pointed to stronger opportunities in grocery delivery and Whole Foods.

What the strategy means
The decision is better described as a strategic retreat from proprietary store formats than as a declared finding that every location was unprofitable. Amazon is concentrating investment on an established grocery brand, delivery infrastructure, local grocery partnerships and selective experiments. TechCrunch characterized the move as a pullback from Amazon-built concepts rather than an abandonment of grocery retail.
Can customers still order Amazon Fresh groceries?
Yes, where the service is offered. Amazon Fresh online ordering and pickup continued after the store closures. Amazon’s grocery update says delivery and pickup access expanded beyond Prime members in locations where the service was available to Prime members; eligibility, fees, minimums, delivery windows and assortment still depend on ZIP code. Customers can check availability through Amazon Fresh.
Amazon said its grocery delivery reached more than 5,000 U.S. cities and towns and increasingly included produce, dairy, meat, baked goods and frozen food. Those are Amazon-reported, time-sensitive figures, not a guarantee of service in every market. Amazon also described Amazon Now, an approximately 30-minute grocery-delivery test available in several cities.
Prime members may receive free Amazon Fresh delivery on qualifying orders over $100 under terms Amazon described; thresholds and fees can change, so verify the current offer at checkout. A Prime membership may be useful for frequent Amazon shoppers, but it is not automatically the cheapest option for every household.

What is replacing the stores?
Whole Foods Market expansion
Amazon said it planned to open more than 100 new Whole Foods Market stores over the next few years. It cited more than 550 existing locations and more than 40% sales growth since Amazon’s 2017 acquisition, using figures in its January 2026 announcement. Whole Foods is therefore the clearest physical-store alternative within Amazon’s ecosystem, although its prices, assortment and locations differ from Amazon Fresh.
Whole Foods Market Daily Shop
Daily Shop is a smaller convenience-oriented format featuring grab-and-go meals, coffee and everyday essentials. Amazon said five locations were operating and five additional locations were planned by the end of 2026. These are plans and reported counts, not a guarantee that a Daily Shop will open near a particular former Fresh or Go site.
Other grocery experiments
- An Amazon Grocery experience launched alongside Whole Foods Market in Chicago.
- A “store within a store” concept was being tested at the Whole Foods Market in Plymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania.
- Amazon described a possible larger-format concept combining fresh groceries, household essentials and general merchandise.
These initiatives show that Amazon is still experimenting with physical retail; they do not constitute a finalized replacement chain.
Did Just Walk Out technology end?
No. Closing Amazon’s own Go stores did not shut down Just Walk Out as a technology business. Amazon said the system operated in more than 360 third-party locations across five countries and in more than 40 North American Amazon fulfillment-center breakrooms. Axios reported that Amazon planned to continue licensing it to outside operators.

That distinction matters: a shopper may still encounter Just Walk Out at an airport, stadium, hospital, campus or convenience venue, but not necessarily at a former Amazon Go address. Amazon’s larger Fresh stores had also used or tested Dash Cart technology, so Amazon Go, Just Walk Out and Fresh-store checkout were never exactly the same product. See Amazon’s technology explanation at About Amazon and the vendor site at Just Walk Out.

Amazon One is a separate development. GeekWire reported that Amazon planned to discontinue Amazon One services at retail businesses on June 3, 2026, citing limited adoption. Amazon said associated customer data would be securely deleted after the retail service ended. Existing healthcare locations were to remain available until further notice. This was a parallel retreat from one in-store identity system, not the stated reason for closing Go and Fresh stores.
What should former customers do?
If you want Amazon grocery delivery
Enter your ZIP code at Amazon Fresh and compare delivery fees, minimum orders, pickup windows and substitutions before placing an order. Product availability may not match the assortment of a former local store.
If you want a physical Amazon-affiliated supermarket
Use the Whole Foods Market store locator. Whole Foods also offers delivery and pickup through its grocery service, but pricing and selection can differ from Amazon Fresh.

If your former location has closed
Do not assume it became Whole Foods. Amazon said only “various” locations would be converted, without publishing a complete conversion list in the announcement.
If you are seeking cashierless shopping
Look for third-party venues using Just Walk Out technology. The availability of a particular venue is local and does not imply that Amazon is reopening its own Go stores.
If you used Amazon One
Check Amazon’s current information at Amazon One before relying on the service. The reported retail discontinuation and the healthcare exception applied to different venue types.
What this says about Amazon’s grocery strategy
Amazon is consolidating rather than abandoning grocery. Its standalone Go and Fresh stores are being removed, while Whole Foods expansion, online delivery, third-party grocery relationships, technology licensing and limited physical-format tests continue. The company is favoring channels that can use existing scale instead of trying to expand every proprietary store concept nationwide.
