What Amazon actually announced
CEO Andy Jassy said Amazon would return to working in the office “the way we were before the onset of COVID.” The announced start date was January 2, 2025—not the day of the announcement. For most affected corporate employees, the change replaced the routine hybrid pattern that commonly included two work-from-home days with a five-day office expectation.
That wording matters. Amazon set a normal attendance expectation for particular office-based roles; it did not declare that every employee, every job, or every work-from-home arrangement had disappeared. Read the original announcement at Amazon’s CEO update.
Who the five-day expectation affects
The policy primarily concerns corporate employees whose jobs are assigned to an office and can be performed away from one, but whom Amazon expects to work in person. It should not be treated as a single rule for Amazon’s entire workforce.

Amazon’s earlier guidance distinguished remote-friendly positions, roles requiring onsite work and employees who were mostly remote before the pandemic. That history is documented in Amazon’s return-to-office guidance and its earlier flexibility update.
What exceptions remain
Jassy identified limited circumstances in which working remotely could still be appropriate:
- The employee or a child is sick.
- A household emergency occurs.
- The employee is traveling to meet a customer or partner.
- A day or two of highly isolated work, such as coding, is needed.
- The employee has an approved Remote Work Exception.
These examples are exceptions to the ordinary office expectation, not a general right to choose remote days whenever preferred. The public announcement does not establish a universal application form, approval deadline, guaranteed medical or caregiving exemption, appeal process or automatic attendance threshold. Employees who rely on an exception should obtain the arrangement in writing through the relevant manager, HR channel or leadership process rather than rely on an informal conversation.

Does Amazon still hire remote workers?
Yes. Amazon’s careers pages say some jobs offer partial remote or work-from-home potential and that some positions are fully remote. Availability depends on the individual posting, country, location, team and job requirements—not simply on being a technology or corporate job.

Amazon’s hiring FAQ says work-from-home customer-service openings may be available, but applicants must live in the country named in the job description. If no work-from-home jobs are listed for a country, Amazon says there are no current openings shown there. Official applications do not require an employment fee.

Remote does not mean work from anywhere
A remote designation can still be limited by the assigned location, payroll and tax rules, immigration and work authorization, data-security requirements, employment law and team time zones. “Remote” is not permission to work indefinitely from another state or country unless the job terms and the employer’s rules allow it.
How Amazon’s policy evolved
- During the pandemic, many employees worked remotely.
- In 2021, Amazon moved toward team-level flexibility.
- Amazon later established a baseline of three office days per week for many corporate roles.
- On September 16, 2024, Jassy announced the five-day expectation, effective January 2, 2025.

Why Amazon gave for the change
Amazon said in-person work would strengthen collaboration, employee connections, culture, invention and decision-making. Jassy pointed to informal conversations, whiteboards and interactions around meetings as examples of work he believes is easier in an office.

Those are Amazon’s stated reasons, not independent proof that five-day attendance improves productivity in every role. Employees have raised different costs and concerns, including commuting, childcare and eldercare, relocation, housing and the loss of a quiet home-work environment. Whether a blanket schedule is better than role- or team-specific flexibility remains a contested management judgment.

Some employees and commentators have interpreted strict return-to-office rules as likely to produce attrition. That is an interpretation, not an established statement of Amazon’s intent. Amazon’s public announcement framed the change around culture, collaboration and invention; it did not say the goal was to force resignations or avoid severance.
Amazon later announced organizational changes affecting approximately 16,000 roles on January 28, 2026. That announcement described restructuring and did not establish that the return-to-office policy caused those reductions. See Amazon’s organizational-change announcement.

What employees should check when terms change
- Review the job posting and offer letter. Look for “fully remote,” “virtual,” “hybrid,” “office-based,” assigned-office language, travel requirements and relocation terms.
- Ask for the current requirement in writing. Confirm the assigned office, expected attendance, effective date and whether an exception is formally approved.
- Separate location from flexibility. An office-tied role may allow occasional remote work; that is different from a permanent virtual designation.
- Clarify relocation. Do not assume Amazon will pay relocation costs or preserve a role indefinitely if you move.
- Document discrepancies before resigning. Keep the offer, recruiter messages and written policy communications.
- Use the appropriate internal route. Raise questions with the manager, HR or another designated channel. No public source guarantees a particular outcome.
How the rule affects different work situations
- Remote job later assigned to an office: Compare the original written terms with the new instruction and ask which document governs.
- Approved exception after a team change: Confirm whether the approval follows the employee or must be reviewed for the new team.
- Occasional remote need without a permanent exception: Ask what short-term process applies instead of assuming a recurring entitlement.
- Multi-office or satellite-office team: Identify the officially assigned location and whether another site is acceptable.
- Cross-state or international work: Verify tax, immigration, security and local-law requirements before working elsewhere.
- Disability or caregiving circumstance: Ask the appropriate HR or accommodations channel about the process; the public announcement does not promise approval.
Amazon’s wider workforce is not one remote-work category
Amazon employs people in fulfillment, transportation, pharmacy, retail and other operational roles as well as corporate staff. Many of those jobs were already physical and were not part of a newly imposed conversion from remote work. Amazon’s workforce overview is available at aboutamazon.com/workplace, while job-specific conditions remain dependent on location and role.
The accurate takeaway
Amazon said no to routine, employee-selected hybrid work for most office-based corporate employees beginning January 2, 2025. It did not say no to every remote position: approved exceptions, partially remote roles and fully remote job postings remain possible, with the controlling details found in the employee’s documents and the specific Amazon job listing.
