Amazon, Rackspace Are Top Cloud Hosts: What the 2009 Headline Actually Means

The headline dates to August 3, 2009. Its seventh-place position reflects article page views, not evidence that Amazon or Rackspace ranked among the top cloud hosts.

The headline “Amazon, Rackspace Are Top Cloud Hosts” dates to August 3, 2009, but the available evidence does not establish that either company led the cloud-hosting market. Data Center Knowledge’s surviving archive places the story seventh among its ten most-read stories for August 2009—a ranking by article page views, not by provider performance or market share.

What the headline refers to

Data Center Knowledge published the story on August 3, 2009, according to the publisher’s September 2009 archive roundup. The roundup lists ten popular stories from August and says the list is ranked by total page views. The cloud-hosting headline appears in seventh place.

The archive does not provide page-view totals. More importantly, its ranking measures readership of stories, not the standing of cloud providers. Seventh place in that list says nothing by itself about Amazon’s or Rackspace’s market share, revenue, reliability, speed, or service quality.

What can—and cannot—be concluded

  • Established: Data Center Knowledge published a story with this headline on August 3, 2009, and it was seventh in the site’s August most-read list.
  • Not established: The available archive does not show what criteria or data the original story used to call Amazon and Rackspace “top” hosts.
  • Not established: The archive cannot support a present-day ranking or recommendation of cloud providers.

The original comparison story and its underlying evidence are not available in the surviving source reviewed here. Without them, the headline should not be treated as a verified provider league table.

What the contemporaneous comment adds

An August 3, 2009 BitMason blog post linked to the story. Its author wrote, “Rackspace doing well against Amazin. Google AppEngine hasn’t gotten much traction.” This is informal contemporaneous commentary, not a finding attributed to Data Center Knowledge, and it supplies no comparative figures or methodology. It cannot verify how Amazon, Rackspace, or Google App Engine performed against one another.

How to read the claim today

For a current hosting decision, this historical headline is not enough to choose a provider. A useful comparison needs current, dated evidence for the specific workload: service coverage and geographic availability, reliability commitments, security and compliance needs, support, and total cost. None of those comparisons is supplied by the 2009 archive entry.
