Amazon Prime Day 2024 took place Tuesday, July 16, through Wednesday, July 17. In the United States, the 48-hour event began at 12:01 a.m. Pacific Daylight Time on July 16. It was Amazon’s 10th Prime Day, and the main sale was available only to Prime members, including eligible customers who joined or started a qualifying trial.
This archived guide explains the confirmed schedule, 2024 membership pricing, announced promotions, international availability, and how to judge whether joining Prime or using a promotional payment method made financial sense.
When was Prime Day 2024?
The U.S. Prime Day 2024 event ran from 12:01 a.m. PDT on Tuesday, July 16, through Wednesday, July 17, 2024, for 48 hours. Amazon announced the dates on June 25 after first saying in April that Prime Day would return in July. It described the event as its 10th Prime Day.
Amazon promoted deals before July 16, but those early offers were separate from the two-day main event. An early promotion could be worthwhile, but it was not a guarantee that the product would not receive a lower price later.

Who could shop the sale?
Prime Day deals were restricted to Prime members. A shopper without an active membership could become eligible by joining a paid plan, starting an eligible free trial, or using an eligible discounted plan.
- Standard Prime: available through monthly or annual membership.
- Prime Student or young-adult membership: available to eligible customers who met Amazon’s age, student, and verification requirements.
- Prime Access: available to qualifying government-assistance recipients after verification.
- Free trial: offered only to eligible customers, not universally.
Amazon’s sign-up guidance says a membership automatically renews and the customer is charged after the free-trial period unless it is canceled. Check the renewal screen and cancellation terms before starting a trial. See Amazon’s sign-up guidance and its explanation of shopping without Prime.
How much did Prime cost during the 2024 event?
The following were the U.S. prices and trial signals Amazon published for Prime Day 2024. They are historical figures, not a promise of today’s checkout price.

| Membership | 2024 U.S. price or trial |
|---|---|
| Standard Prime | $14.99 per month or $139 per year |
| Prime Student/young adults | Six-month trial, then $7.49 per month or $69 per year for eligible customers |
| Prime Access | $6.99 per month for qualifying recipients |
| Standard trial | Free 30-day trial for eligible customers |
At those prices, paying monthly for 12 months would total $179.88, so the $139 annual plan was $40.88 cheaper before tax. Someone joining only for the event would instead compare the membership fee with the realistic value of the discounts, shipping, and other benefits they expect to use. Current eligibility and prices should be checked at Amazon’s Prime page.
What deals and categories were announced?
Amazon said it would offer more than 5 million deals worldwide across more than 35 categories. Its July preview included electronics, Amazon devices, home and kitchen products, fashion, beauty, school supplies, outdoor goods, and products from independent sellers and small businesses.
Examples Amazon advertised for selected products included:
- Up to 50% off select Sony speakers.
- Up to 30% off select Coach handbags and shoes.
- Up to 20% off select Supergoop! sunscreen.
- Up to 50% off select Keurig coffee makers and school supplies.
- Up to 30% off select New Balance products.
- Up to 50% off select Dyson products.
- Offers involving Stanley, Oakley, Sun Bum, Wilson, Joola, Hey Dude, and Keds.
“Up to” applies only to selected items. It does not mean every product from a named brand, or every item in a category, received the maximum discount. Amazon’s announcement is a useful record of the promotion, but it does not independently establish that every advertised price was the lowest available from all retailers.

Were there early Prime Day deals?
Yes. Before July 16, Amazon highlighted early savings from brands including New Balance, HP, Coach, NordicTrack, poppi, and Hatch, along with promotions on devices, music, gaming, and other services. These offers could be legitimate Prime Day promotions, but shoppers still needed to compare the price with later event offers and competing retailers.
How could shoppers receive deal alerts?
Amazon promoted personalized notifications in its Shopping app based on recent searches and product views. The 2024 interface used the following general path:
- Open the Amazon Shopping app.
- Go to the Prime Day event page.
- Select products or recent searches for which alerts are wanted.
- Enable notifications when prompted.
- Allow Amazon notifications in the phone’s operating-system settings.
These alerts were personalized and were not a guarantee that every deal would trigger a notification. Amazon also brought back invite-only deals for products expected to sell out. Requesting an invitation did not guarantee selection, a purchase opportunity, or remaining inventory. During selected periods, new deals could appear as frequently as every five minutes.
How to prepare and evaluate a deal
- Confirm eligibility: Check whether your Prime membership or trial is active before shopping.
- Make a list: Decide what you need before browsing so a large discount does not create an unnecessary purchase.
- Record the exact product: Verify model number, generation, size, capacity, and included accessories.
- Check price history: Compare the sale price with recent selling prices, not just Amazon’s displayed list price.
- Inspect the seller: Review whether the item is sold by Amazon, the brand, or a third-party marketplace seller.
- Review fulfillment and returns: Confirm delivery date, return window, product condition, warranty, and any seller-specific restrictions.
- Compare elsewhere: Check other retailers, including competing sales from Walmart and Target, rather than assuming Amazon is cheapest.
- Read the variant-specific reviews: Merged listings can combine reviews for different sizes, generations, or conditions.
What other Prime Day promotions were offered?
Amazon’s 2024 announcements also promoted time-limited offers involving Prime Visa, the Prime Store Card, Amazon Music Unlimited, Audible Premium Plus, Prime Gaming, Kindle Unlimited, Amazon devices, Amazon Fresh, Whole Foods Market delivery, and Grubhub+. Eligibility varied by offer.

For example, Amazon advertised an instant $200 Amazon Gift Card for approved Prime Visa applicants during a specified June 27–July 24, 2024 window, and an $80 Amazon Gift Card for approved Prime Store Card applicants during a July 12–17 window. Those promotions expired and should not be treated as current offers. Approval was required, and each product had separate terms, rewards rules, and potential interest costs. Never apply for a credit product solely to obtain a small one-time discount if you may carry a balance.

Amazon listed Prime Day 2024 availability in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Egypt, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Mexico, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, the United States, and the United Kingdom.
Dates, start times, currencies, inventory, shipping, and membership rules could differ by country. Amazon noted that Prime members in India would shop later in the summer, so the U.S. July 16–17 schedule was not universal. See Amazon’s international announcement for the country list.
Is Prime worth joining just for Prime Day?
There is no universal answer. At the 2024 U.S. prices, a monthly member needed more than $14.99 in genuine savings or usable benefits to break even for that month; an annual member needed more than $139 over the year. Include delivery savings and entertainment only if you would actually use them.

Best Value
- HD streaming made simple: With America’s number 1 TV streaming platform,* exploring popular apps—plus tons of free movies, shows, and live TV—is as easy as it is fun. *Based on hours streamed—Hypothesis Group
- Compact without compromises: The sleek design of Roku Streaming Stick won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight. No wall outlet, no extra cords, no clutter.
- No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.
- Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
- TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
Joining is harder to justify when the planned purchase is small, a competitor has a lower price, the item may sell out, or you are unlikely to cancel a trial before automatic renewal. Prime Student or Prime Access could change the calculation for people who qualify and expect to use the membership beyond one sale. Current terms and eligibility should be verified directly with Amazon.
What happened after the event?
On July 18, Amazon said Prime Day 2024 was its biggest Prime Day shopping event to date, with more items sold than during any previous Prime Day. That is an Amazon-reported claim, not an independently audited comparison. Amazon also reported that independent sellers sold more than 200 million items during the event.
For a retrospective, the reliable conclusion is narrower: Prime Day 2024 was a two-day, Prime-only event with millions of advertised offers, early promotions, and country-specific schedules. Whether any individual purchase was a good deal depended on the product’s recent price, seller, terms, and the shopper’s actual need.
