Amazon Lens Live is real, but it is not a new app or a magic “scan anything” shopping device. It is a live-camera mode inside the Amazon Shopping app that looks for products as you move your iPhone or Android phone, then shows exact or visually similar listings from Amazon’s catalog. Amazon says the feature was announced on September 2, 2025, and is available to tens of millions of U.S. customers as of August 18, 2026.
That makes Lens Live useful for identifying an unfamiliar lamp, jacket, tool or kitchen item. It does not guarantee the original product, the lowest price, authenticity, compatibility or even a product match.
What Amazon Lens Live does
Lens Live continuously analyzes the camera view instead of waiting for one still photograph. Detected items appear in a swipeable carousel at the bottom of the camera screen. You can tap an object to focus on it, swipe through matches, add a result to your cart or save it to a list without leaving the camera view.
Amazon says matching compares the view with its catalog of billions of products. A result may be an exact listing, a highly similar item or no product match. When no exact or similar product is found, Amazon says Lens can produce an “intelligent caption” describing what is visible. Product pages still control the important purchasing details: seller, condition, price, delivery date and return terms.

Amazon originally described the shopping assistant in Lens Live as Rufus. Amazon says it was renamed Alexa for Shopping on May 13, 2026; older coverage may use the former name. Amazon’s announcement and technical description explain the launch and rename.
How to launch and use Lens Live
The exact icon name and placement can vary by app version, device and rollout. The stable route is the Amazon Shopping app, then the search bar and its Lens or scan-camera icon.
- Open the Amazon Shopping app and tap the Lens/scan icon in the search bar.
- Point the camera at a product or product-like object. Live scanning begins as you move the phone.
- Watch the carousel for possible matches and tap the item you want to investigate.
- Swipe through results. Use the plus button to add an item to the cart or the heart button to save it to a list.
- Use the suggested prompts or the Ask about this field for follow-up questions about the visible item.

Computer vision
Amazon says a lightweight object-detection model runs on the device as the camera moves. A visual-embedding model then retrieves exact or highly similar products from Amazon’s catalog. Amazon also describes infrastructure using AWS-managed Amazon OpenSearch and Amazon SageMaker. Those are implementation details, not settings shoppers can configure.
Alexa for Shopping
The conversational assistant can summarize a product, suggest questions, answer what is visible and handle follow-ups through the question field. Amazon’s example asks how to remove coffee from a rug, showing that the assistant can offer product-related advice even without identifying one precise listing. Treat such answers as general shopping guidance, not professional medical, legal, safety or repair advice.

Does it really scan “anything”?
That phrase is marketing shorthand. Lens Live is designed primarily for products and product-like objects, not universal recognition of every plant, landmark, person, artwork or obscure object. It searches Amazon’s catalog rather than the entire web.
Recognition is more likely to fail or mislead when an item is:
- partly hidden, behind glass, reflective or poorly lit;
- blurred by movement or captured at low resolution;
- generic, vintage, handmade, discontinued or locally made;
- part of a bundle that the system treats as one component; or
- visually similar to many products but materially different in size, fit or function.
A caption is not proof that Amazon sells the object, and a visual match is not proof that the listing is the original item.

Accuracy and money risks to check before buying
A lookalike may replace the original
Visual systems can prioritize shape, color and styling over brand, materials, dimensions, compatibility or quality. Before paying, verify the brand and model, measurements, material, color or finish, compatibility, seller, condition, return policy, review dates and delivery estimate.
Prices and sellers can differ
A match may lead to multiple offers with different sellers, conditions, shipping costs and delivery dates. Prices can change after the scan. Compare the complete checkout cost rather than relying on the first carousel result.
Similarity is not authentication
Lens Live cannot establish that a branded item is genuine, that a replacement part is safe for your device or that a product meets a technical specification. For safety-critical, expensive or compatibility-sensitive purchases, confirm details with the manufacturer or an authoritative product source.

Privacy and permissions
Live scanning requires camera access. The U.S. iOS listing says Amazon Shopping may request camera, photos, microphone, notifications, contacts, authentication and Bluetooth permissions depending on the features used; it also says supported TrueDepth facial-processing information for virtual try-on remains on the device. Amazon’s Lens Live description supports a hybrid architecture: object detection on the device alongside network services for catalog retrieval and AI responses. It does not establish that every camera frame is never uploaded or stored, nor does it publish a complete Lens Live frame-retention policy in the cited materials. Check Amazon’s current privacy notice and your phone’s permission controls before use.
- Avoid pointing the camera at private documents, addresses, screens, children or sensitive locations.
- Allow camera access only when you intend to scan; revoke it in system settings afterward if preferred.
- Remember that camera permission alone does not tell you how long any data is retained.
Availability and cost
Amazon says Lens Live is available on iOS and Android to tens of millions of U.S. customers. That does not establish universal access for every account, country, device or app build. The Amazon Shopping app is listed as free on Apple’s U.S. App Store; Google Play labels it as containing ads and in-app purchases. There is no separately disclosed Lens Live subscription or per-scan fee. The item you buy, shipping and any membership benefits cost extra. Google Play’s listing is at Google Play.
Amazon has not established that Prime is required for Lens Live. Delivery benefits depend on your account, the product, seller and location.
When to use Lens Live—and when not to
Good fit
- You do not know an item’s name or keywords.
- The product has distinctive packaging, branding, shape or styling.
- You want Amazon alternatives and a quick way to save one to a list.
Choose another method
- Use a barcode for exact identification when available.
- Use a still photo, object selection or text refinement for a crowded or partly hidden scene.
- Use Google Lens at lens.google.com for broader web, text, landmark or object searches.
- Consider Pinterest visual search at Pinterest for style and décor inspiration, or eBay image search at eBay for used and collectible inventory.
- Do not rely on Lens Live when you need the lowest price across retailers, proof of authenticity or safety-critical compatibility.
Troubleshooting a missing or poor result
- Update Amazon Shopping and confirm that the app has camera permission.
- Improve lighting, move closer, steady the phone and try another angle.
- Remove visual clutter or tap the intended object so the system does not select the most prominent item.
- Try a barcode, still photo, uploaded image or text such as the brand, color, size or intended use.
- If Lens Live is absent, the account, marketplace or app build may not be included in the rollout; ordinary Amazon Lens remains the fallback.
Bottom line
Lens Live is a convenient near-real-time way to discover products in Amazon’s catalog, especially when you cannot name what you see. Treat its carousel as a lead, not a buying decision: confirm the listing, seller, specifications, total cost and returns, and use a barcode or broader visual search when an exact or non-Amazon answer matters.
