Amazon owns a minority stake in the YES Network, but it did not acquire that stake in 2026: Amazon joined the investor group that bought Disney’s YES interest in 2019. The current developments are about distribution and sports rights— including YES programming available through Prime Video—not a new Amazon takeover or ownership of the New York Yankees.
What Amazon owns—and what it does not
YES Network is a regional sports network focused on the New York Yankees and Brooklyn Nets. It carries live games and related team programming, and says it holds exclusive regional media rights to both teams. Amazon owns part of the network; it does not own the Yankees baseball club. Yankee Global Enterprises, the Yankees’ parent organization, is also among YES’s owners. YES Network’s current ownership and network information
Those distinctions matter: owning equity in a network is different from owning a team, holding a broadcast right, or distributing a channel or app. Amazon’s stake does not establish that it controls YES or that all YES programming is included in Prime membership.
Amazon’s YES investment dates to 2019
On August 29, 2019, Disney announced that it had agreed to sell its YES equity interest to an investor group that included Yankee Global Enterprises and Sinclair. Amazon was also part of the buying group. The group acquired Disney’s 80% interest; Amazon was one participant, not the sole buyer. Disney’s transaction announcement and MLB’s account of the deal

Contemporary coverage put the transaction’s value at approximately $3.47 billion. That was the reported value of the transaction involving the 80% interest, not the value of Amazon’s individual stake. Axios’s 2019 report on the sale
Disney’s sale followed the regulatory process around its acquisition of 21st Century Fox. It was a sale to an investor consortium, not a direct Amazon purchase of the network. Disney’s announcement

Who owns YES now, and how large is Amazon’s stake?
YES’s current About Us page lists Yankee Global Enterprises, Main Street Sports, Amazon, RedBird Capital, Blackstone’s Tactical Opportunities business, and Mubadala Capital among the network’s owners. The page does not give their ownership percentages. YES Network
Some secondary accounts have described Amazon’s interest as 15%, but the current official ownership page does not confirm that figure. Without a current ownership breakdown, the careful description is that Amazon owns a minority stake. Sinclair participated in the 2019 deal and later disclosed acquiring a minority YES interest, but it is not named in the current YES ownership list; its present position should not be assumed from the 2019 transaction alone. How YES connects to Prime Video
Amazon’s relationship with YES has two separate strands: an equity interest in the network and commercial arrangements involving sports distribution. One does not automatically prove the terms of the other. Amazon’s 2026 sports guide says Prime members can watch Yankees games, including games produced by the YES broadcast team in collaboration with Prime Video. It does not say every Yankees game is on Prime Video. Amazon’s live-sports guide
In February 2026, YES announced that the Gotham Sports app could be purchased through Prime Video. Gotham Sports is the direct-to-consumer home for YES and MSG Networks programming in their respective regional coverage areas. Being able to purchase it through Prime Video is a distribution option; it is not evidence that the app is free with a standard Prime membership. YES’s announcement about Gotham Sports on Prime Video

There is also a stated future change: a July 29, 2026 announcement said DAZN would become the exclusive direct-to-consumer streaming home for YES and MSG Networks during the 2026–27 NBA and NHL seasons. The announcement said further details and migration timing would follow. It does not, by itself, resolve how the Prime Video purchase route will work during or after the transition, or establish the service’s eventual pricing and account-migration process. There is no single subscription answer for every game. The rights holder and viewing options can differ from one matchup to another, and local territory affects access. Before subscribing, check the listing for the specific game and confirm whether the service requires an add-on or separate subscription.

- It can be a gift option
- Comes with secure packaging
- Helpful in various ways
- Check the game’s listed broadcaster. A Yankees game may be on YES, Prime Video, a national broadcaster, or another streaming service. Amazon’s YES stake does not make every game a Prime Video broadcast.
- Check your location. YES and Gotham Sports serve regional coverage areas. Out-of-market viewers may have different options, while local blackout rules can restrict access to certain games.
- Check what the subscription includes. Prime membership, Prime Video, a paid channel or app subscription, and a separate streaming service are not interchangeable. “Available through Prime Video” does not necessarily mean “included with Prime.”
- Recheck DTC service details before relying on them. DAZN’s announced 2026–27 role concerns the direct-to-consumer home for YES and MSG Networks; the final migration and purchase details were not specified in the announcement.
What the YES stake says about Amazon’s sports strategy
YES is one piece of a broader approach, not the whole story. Amazon combines sports programming and rights with Prime Video distribution and, in some cases, paid sports subscriptions. The company’s 2026 guide lists a range of live sports, including Yankees programming, NFL, NBA, NWSL, NASCAR, soccer, and other events. Amazon’s live-sports guide
The NBA has also named Prime Video a national media partner through the 2035–36 season. That agreement illustrates the scale of Amazon’s rights strategy, while the YES investment represents an ownership connection to a regional sports network. Neither fact means Amazon owns the teams whose games it carries. NBA’s media-agreement announcement
For a personal-finance decision, the practical point is to compare the actual game coverage you need with the total cost of the subscriptions available in your area. Do not pay for Prime solely on the assumption that it includes complete YES access or every Yankees game; confirm the specific game, territory, and subscription terms first.
