TechCrunch reported on August 19, 2024 that three anonymous sources said Amazon had approached the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and might need to issue fresh UPI IDs. Amazon declined to comment and described the report as speculation. As of August 18, 2026, the reviewed official material does not verify a separate Amazon Pay app in India.
What Amazon was reportedly considering
The reported proposal was to move Amazon Pay’s India payments services out of the Amazon shopping application and into a dedicated payments app. The possible scope included:

- Person-to-person UPI transfers
- Merchant payments and QR payments
- Bill payments and recharges
- Insurance
- Travel bookings
- Mutual funds and digital gold
- Other Amazon Pay financial services
This was an internal consideration described by confidential sources, not a public launch announcement or published product specification.
Why Amazon might separate payments from shopping
Sources familiar with the discussions told TechCrunch that Amazon Pay was not receiving enough attention inside the broader e-commerce app. A payments-first app could make UPI transfers, QR scans and bill payments easier to find and encourage more frequent use. It would also give Amazon a clearer payments brand in competition with PhonePe, Google Pay and Paytm, rather than positioning Amazon Pay mainly as an Amazon checkout feature.

- Amazon.com Gift Cards never expire and carry no fees.
- Multiple gift card designs and denominations to choose from.
- Redeemable towards millions of items store-wide at Amazon.com or certain affiliated websites.
- Available for immediate delivery. Gift cards sent by email can be scheduled up to a year in advance.
- No returns and no refunds on Gift Cards.
The competitive pressure was significant in the figures cited in the 2024 report: Amazon Pay handled approximately 72.4 million UPI transactions in July 2024, about 0.5% of UPI transactions that month. Those figures are historical and should not be treated as current market share.
The UPI-ID migration problem
The most difficult practical issue was the possibility that users would need new UPI IDs. TechCrunch reported that Amazon would likely have to issue fresh identifiers, although no final migration rule was announced.

Why a UPI ID matters
A UPI ID is used by people and businesses to send money to an account. It can appear in payment links, merchant records, saved beneficiary lists and recurring-payment arrangements. Changing it can therefore create failed transfers and confusion even when the underlying bank account remains the same.
What a migration could require
- Registering the bank account again in a new app
- Re-enabling phone-number or SMS verification
- Recreating a UPI PIN or device permissions, if required by the participating bank and NPCI process
- Updating payment links, saved beneficiaries and merchant records
- Checking whether mandates and recurring payments still work
Amazon would also have to explain whether old IDs would keep receiving payments, redirect during a transition, or stop working. The report did not establish that every user would definitely lose an existing ID.

What NPCI’s role means
NPCI operates UPI and defines the ecosystem in which payment apps, banks and users connect. Its UPI overview explains that users link bank accounts through a UPI app and authorize transactions with a UPI PIN.
The evidence supports a distinction between five different events:
Rank #4
- Gift Card is redeemable towards millions of items storewide at Amazon.com
- Gift Card has no fees and no expiration date
- Gift Card is nested inside a specialty gift box
- Free One-Day Shipping (where available)
- Scan and redeem any Gift Card with a mobile or tablet device via the Amazon App
- Amazon considering a product change.
- Amazon reportedly discussing it with NPCI.
- NPCI approving an architecture or partner arrangement.
- Amazon publishing a downloadable standalone app.
- Users actually migrating to that app.
Only the first two were reported as possibilities. No public NPCI approval or Amazon launch notice identified in the reviewed sources establishes the later stages.
Amazon Pay already existed inside Amazon’s app
Amazon launched Amazon Pay UPI for Android customers in February 2019 with Axis Bank. Users could link a bank account in the Amazon mobile app and use UPI for purchases, recharges and bill payments. The original announcement is available from Amazon India.

Amazon Pay is therefore already a service and brand in India. The reported news concerned its distribution and product architecture, not the creation of Amazon Pay itself. Amazon’s current India overview continues to present UPI, Amazon Pay Balance, Amazon Pay Later, insurance, travel and merchant services as part of the wider Amazon ecosystem.

Amazon’s current India materials still describe using Amazon Pay through the Amazon app. The official Apple App Store listing remains the combined “Amazon India – Shop, Pay, miniTV” app rather than a separate Amazon Pay download.
Amazon later announced features including UPI Circle and wearable payments on October 8, 2025, without announcing a standalone app. NPCI’s August 2025 UPI statistics recorded 98.98 million Amazon Pay app transactions, but that table does not show whether the app architecture was embedded or standalone.
Potential advantages and costs
Why a dedicated app could help
- Payment tools could be more prominent and faster to reach.
- Amazon could run payment-specific rewards and retention campaigns.
- The brand could compete more directly with payment-first rivals.
- A smaller interface might be less cluttered than the full shopping app.
Why separation could hurt
- Users would need to install and maintain another app.
- Shopping, checkout and payments would no longer be in one place.
- Balances, rewards, support and transaction history could feel fragmented.
- UPI-ID migration could disrupt mandates, saved beneficiaries and merchant relationships.
- Acquisition and customer-support costs would increase, without guaranteeing stronger payment habits than established rivals already have.
What users should do now
Until Amazon publishes a confirmed launch notice, users should treat standalone-app claims cautiously:
- Continue using the official Amazon India app for Amazon Pay.
- Download only from India’s official Google Play or Apple App Store listings.
- Check that the publisher is a clearly verified Amazon entity and review the requested permissions.
- Do not install an APK, trust a screenshot or treat an app-name listing as proof of a national launch.
- Never share a UPI PIN, one-time password or banking credentials with someone offering “migration” assistance.
- If Amazon announces a migration, verify whether old UPI IDs, balances, rewards, history and recurring payments transfer before changing anything.
Bottom line
Amazon had a credible reason to explore a payment-first app: Amazon Pay’s visibility and UPI scale were modest compared with leading rivals, and a separate product could improve discovery. But the public record supports only a reported 2024 plan and reported NPCI discussions. As of August 18, 2026, no reviewed source verifies that Amazon completed the separation, and the plan may have been delayed, changed or abandoned.
