If Amazon checkout is spinning, the “Proceed to checkout” button does nothing, or payment fails, first check Your Orders and your bank activity before trying again. A failed-looking page can still create an order or a temporary authorization. The problem may be a local browser or app issue, a cart or account restriction, a bank decline, or an Amazon-side incident.
There is no reliable evidence confirming a platform-wide Amazon.com checkout outage on August 18, 2026. An independent monitor’s latest listed check was July 31, 2026, which is too old to establish Amazon’s status today (OutageHQ). User reports from August 16 describe checkout failures, but individual reports do not prove that every shopper is affected.
Start safely: make sure an order was not created
- Open Your Orders in Amazon.com or the Amazon Shopping app.
- Search your email and text messages for an order confirmation.
- Check your card or bank account for a pending authorization or posted charge.
- Do not repeatedly click Place your order until you know whether the first attempt succeeded.
A pending authorization is not proof of a completed order. It can remain temporarily even when Amazon does not create an order; release timing depends on the card issuer or bank.
What kind of checkout failure are you seeing?

Is Amazon down for everyone?
A broad service problem is more plausible when Amazon’s homepage, account pages, cart, and checkout fail in both the app and a desktop browser, across different devices and internet connections. Widespread reports at the same time or an acknowledgement through Amazon’s official support channels add weight.

A local problem is more likely when checkout works in another browser or private window, fails only on one device, succeeds on cellular data but not Wi-Fi, or breaks only after an extension, VPN, content blocker, or security product is enabled. AWS’s public health dashboard describes AWS events, but an AWS event alone is not proof that Amazon.com retail checkout is unavailable (AWS Health Dashboard).
Use a two-device, two-network test
- Try Amazon in a private/incognito window.
- Try a different browser or device.
- Switch from Wi-Fi to cellular data, or the reverse.
- Compare whether the app, website, cart, and account pages fail in the same way.
If every combination fails, stop making payment attempts and wait for an official update or contact Amazon. If only one combination fails, continue with local troubleshooting.
Fix a stuck Amazon website checkout
1. Test private browsing
Open a private or incognito window, sign in manually, and return to checkout. If it works there, stale cookies, cached session data, or an extension is a likely cause.
2. Disable blockers temporarily
Turn off ad blockers, privacy or script blockers, coupon and price-comparison extensions, browser security extensions, and VPN browser add-ons. Checkout depends on account, address, payment, fraud-screening, and session components; blocking scripts or cross-site elements can leave a button inert or a page loading.

3. Reset Amazon site data
- Refresh the page and close and reopen the browser.
- Test private browsing and another browser first.
- Use your browser’s site-data controls to remove data for Amazon rather than deleting all browsing history.
- Restart the device and sign in again.
Menu names differ among Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari, Android, and iOS, so use the current help for your specific browser version instead of following an unlabeled universal path.
Fix checkout in the Amazon app
- Update Amazon Shopping through the device’s official app store.
- Force-close the app and reopen it.
- Restart the phone or tablet.
- Try checkout through the mobile browser.
- On Android, clear the app cache first. Clearing app data can sign you out and remove local settings.
- On iPhone or iPad, iOS generally lacks the same per-app cache control; reinstalling may reset a corrupted local state. Confirm that you have your Amazon credentials and authentication methods before reinstalling.
Reinstalling does not guarantee a fix; it only helps determine whether the local app state is the cause.
When payment is declined
Amazon’s payment guidance says a bank can decline a transaction even when the card worked before and funds appear available. Verify the card number, expiration date, security code, billing address, and account information. Check whether a replaced or expired card is still saved. Then ask the issuer about fraud controls, unusual-purchase blocks, daily limits, or authorization holds (Amazon payment guidance).
Try another payment method if the issuer cannot resolve the decline promptly. A successful earlier Amazon purchase does not guarantee approval for a later transaction, and changing a billing address or replacing a card can invalidate saved details. Gift-card balances, promotional credits, installments, and split payments may have separate eligibility rules.

Check the cart, address, and delivery details
Checkout can fail for reasons unrelated to payment:
- An incomplete or ineligible shipping address.
- An item that is no longer available for the selected seller or location.
- Products with incompatible delivery requirements.
- An expired, restricted, or invalid coupon.
- A quantity limit, unavailable delivery date, or fulfillment option.
- An account verification or payment-revision request.
Isolate the problem item
Remove products one at a time, or try checkout with only the suspected item. If that works, inspect that item’s seller, quantity, address eligibility, delivery choices, and promotion terms. Rebuild the cart rather than assuming all of Amazon is unavailable.
If money is pending but no order appears
- Check Your Orders and your confirmation email.
- Identify whether the bank entry is pending, completed, reversed, or posted.
- Do not place the order again while the first attempt is unresolved.
- Contact Amazon through its authenticated customer-service workflow if no order exists but a charge has posted.
- Contact the bank if a transaction remains posted or duplicates after Amazon responds.
Amazon’s public support guidance directs customers to the Customer Service Home Page on desktop or in the app, with chat or phone support for unresolved issues (Amazon customer service guidance).
Amazon.com checkout versus Amazon Pay
Amazon.com: The product is being purchased through Amazon’s retail site or app. Check Your Orders and use Amazon customer service for order, delivery, and account issues.

Amazon Pay: An Amazon Pay button appears on another merchant’s website or app. Check Amazon Pay Activity; the merchant generally handles fulfillment, refunds, and product questions, while Amazon Pay handles the payment service (Amazon Pay help).
Amazon Pay statuses include Processing, Completed, Canceled, and Suspended. For a suspended transaction, open Amazon Pay Activity, select the transaction requiring action, choose Manage, select Update payment method, and choose or add another method (Amazon Pay suspended payments). Amazon explains that unsuccessful payment amounts may be released after a few days, with timing varying by issuer or bank (Amazon Pay statuses and authorizations). The standard Amazon Pay flow includes signing in, confirming payment and possibly shipping information, completing any identity challenge, and returning to the merchant’s confirmation page (Amazon Pay checkout flow).

- Both app and website fail across multiple devices and networks.
- Cart and account pages are also unusually slow.
- Many independent shoppers report the same symptom at roughly the same time.
- Amazon acknowledges an incident.
- The page times out repeatedly without accepting address or payment changes.
Continue local troubleshooting when private browsing works, cellular data fixes the issue, the app fails but the website succeeds, or only one item, address, coupon, or card triggers the error.
Stay safe while getting help
- Use only Amazon’s official website, app, or authenticated Customer Service page.
- Do not call numbers copied from forums, ads, PDFs, or suspicious search results.
- Never share one-time passwords, full card numbers, or account passwords with a supposed support agent.
- Do not install remote-access software or “checkout fixer” tools.
