Amazon said on January 28, 2026, that its latest organizational changes would affect approximately 16,000 roles across the company. The separate figure of approximately 30,000 cuts since October is GeekWire’s reported total for the October and January rounds—not a cumulative count stated in Amazon’s announcement.

What Amazon announced in January

In a message to employees, Beth Galetti, Amazon’s Senior Vice President of People Experience and Technology, said the latest organizational changes would affect approximately 16,000 roles across Amazon. The company’s message describes roles affected; it does not present the number as a final audited tally of completed separations. Amazon’s January 28 announcement does not give a role-by-role or country-by-country breakdown.

GeekWire characterized the affected workers as corporate employees globally. That characterization comes from its reporting, rather than a detailed breakdown in Amazon’s employee message.

How the reported total reaches 30,000

GeekWire reported that Amazon cut about 14,000 workers in October 2025 and that the January announcement added approximately 16,000 roles. It described the two rounds together as approximately 30,000 positions since October. Both component figures and the combined total are approximate; the combined figure is GeekWire’s reporting, not a cumulative number Amazon stated in its January message. GeekWire’s January 28 report provides that context.

What support affected employees can expect

Internal job search in the United States

Amazon said most US-based employees whose roles are affected will have 90 days to look for another role internally. The company did not say that this timing applies to every affected employee.

Support for employees who do not move to another role

For employees who do not find an internal role or choose not to pursue one, Amazon said transition support would include severance, outplacement services, and health insurance benefits, as applicable. The announcement does not specify that every benefit applies in the same way to every employee.

Timing outside the United States

Amazon said timing for international employees would vary according to local and country-level requirements. Its announcement does not provide a country-by-country schedule or breakdown.

Why Amazon says it is making changes

Galetti said Amazon had been working to strengthen its organization by “reducing layers, increasing ownership, and removing bureaucracy.” She also said some teams completed organizational changes in October while others did not finish until January. This is the company’s stated rationale; the announcement does not independently establish all the factors behind the cuts.

Does Amazon say more cuts are coming?

Asked in her message whether Amazon planned broad reductions every few months, Galetti replied, “That’s not our plan.” She also said teams would continue to evaluate ownership, speed, and capacity to invent for customers, and make adjustments as appropriate. Her answer is not a guarantee that Amazon will make no further job cuts.
