The agreement covers 690 megawatts, including about 190 MW of planned additional capacity expected in 2030–2032, and the companies say it will enable more than $3 billion in Maryland infrastructure investment. The plant’s output will continue flowing to the PJM grid; the deal does not establish a dedicated physical power line to an Amazon data center.
What Amazon and Constellation agreed to
The agreement supports continued investment in and expansion of the Calvert Cliffs Clean Energy Center in Lusby, Maryland. Its announced 20-year term covers 690 MW in total, including an approximately 190 MW capacity increase that the companies expect to come online between 2030 and 2032. Constellation lists the existing plant capacity as 1,790 MW. The companies say the agreement will enable more than $3 billion in Maryland infrastructure investment, including improvements across the existing plant. These are announced plans and estimates, not completed construction or verified final investment totals. Constellation and Amazon’s September 30, 2026 announcement describes the agreement.
The announcement also includes a retail electricity supply arrangement for Amazon operations in the 13-state PJM market. Constellation says Amazon’s long-term commitment will provide revenue certainty as it pursues relicensing Calvert Cliffs for another 20 years. Relicensing and the planned expansion are objectives, not approvals or completed work.
What the agreement means for the grid—and what it does not
Constellation says all electricity generated at Calvert Cliffs will continue flowing to the PJM regional grid. A power purchase agreement assigns contractual rights and commercial value; it does not, by itself, mean that electrons from the plant are physically routed to one Amazon facility. The associated retail supply arrangement is also distinct from a dedicated plant-to-data-center connection. The companies’ announcement describes the grid flow and retail arrangement.

Why Calvert Cliffs matters in Maryland
Calvert Cliffs sits in Lusby on Chesapeake Bay’s western shore. Constellation describes it as Maryland’s only nuclear plant and largest clean-energy source. In the company’s September 2026 announcement, it said the facility supplies about 80% of Maryland’s clean energy, produces electricity equivalent to the needs of more than 1.3 million homes, employs more than 800 people and contributes about $21 million a year in taxes. These are company-reported figures, not independently audited impact findings. Constellation’s announcement provides its estimates.
How this deal differs from other nuclear-power agreements
Several major technology companies have made or pursued nuclear-energy agreements, but their terms, plants and project status differ. The comparisons below are not interchangeable measures of new generation: the figures and timing reflect what each cited source reported.

|---|---|---|
| Amazon–Constellation, Calvert Cliffs (2026) | 20 years; 690 MW including the planned uprate; about 190 MW of additional capacity expected in 2030–2032. | Plant output continues to flow to PJM; includes retail supply for Amazon operations in the 13-state market. Company announcement. |
| AWS–Talen, Susquehanna (reported by EIA in 2024) | EIA reported 960 MW of contracted capacity, planned increases in 120 MW increments, and an option for AWS to cap its commitment at 480 MW. | Separate Pennsylvania plant and agreement. EIA noted uncertainties around data-center construction, ramp-up to full demand and efficiency; this is historical context, not a current demand estimate. EIA overview, October 1, 2024. |
| Microsoft–Constellation, Crane Clean Energy Center (2024) | Constellation estimated about $1.6 billion in capital spending for the planned restart and targeted 2028 for service. | Separate Three Mile Island Unit 1 project, subject to regulatory approvals and NRC safety and environmental review. The estimate and schedule are from Constellation’s November 2024 SEC filing, not the Calvert Cliffs deal. SEC-filed results. |
| Meta–Constellation, Clinton (2025) | Meta said its 20-year agreement would begin in 2027 and cover 1,121 MW, including 30 MW of incremental capacity. | Separate Illinois plant and agreement. Meta announcement. |
For readers comparing these arrangements, the useful distinctions are contract length, contracted capacity and whether it includes planned uprates, expected delivery timing, grid versus co-located supply, retail terms, and licensing or construction status. A contracted megawatt figure alone does not establish when new power will be available or whether a particular data center will be built.

No. The headline phrase “axed data center” is not enough to identify a project, its location, its capacity, when it was canceled or why. The available coverage listing does not establish those particulars or show that a cancellation caused Amazon and Constellation to sign the agreement. The headline listing is not evidence of that causal link.

Nor does the agreement announcement by itself show what moved Constellation’s share price. A market snapshot showed CEG at $257.49, down 0.55% at the October 2, 2026 close. That is a dated observation, not proof that the deal—or any other single event—caused the day’s move. Yahoo Finance’s CEG chart is the source for that snapshot; prices change after the quoted date.
