Alphabet, Google’s parent company, reported first-quarter 2025 revenue of $90.2 billion and diluted earnings per share (EPS) of $2.81 on April 24, 2025. Both exceeded the FactSet consensus estimates cited by Forbes. Forbes also reported that shares rose about 5% in after-hours trading immediately following the release—a historical reaction, not a current stock quote.

What happened to Alphabet stock after the earnings release?
Forbes reported that Alphabet shares had gained more than 2% in regular trading before the results were released, then rose about 5% in after-hours trading immediately following the announcement. These are separate trading windows. The figures describe the reaction reported at the time on April 24, 2025, not a later closing return or the stock’s present performance.
The after-hours move followed results that beat the cited revenue and EPS estimates, but timing alone does not establish that any single figure caused the share-price change. Investors were also weighing the company’s outlook and risks facing its businesses.

What did Alphabet announce about buybacks and dividends?
Forbes reported that Alphabet’s board authorized a $70 billion stock repurchase program and raised the quarterly cash dividend by 5%, to $0.21 per share. A buyback authorization permits the company to repurchase shares; it does not mean the entire authorized amount was spent immediately.

The strong reported quarter did not remove uncertainty about advertising, the economy, AI-driven changes to search, or regulation.

Advertising and tariffs
Forbes reported that CEO Sundar Pichai discussed a slight advertising headwind for 2025 related to the rollback of de minimis tariff exemptions, primarily involving Asian retailers. This was company commentary about a potential headwind, not a quantified earnings impact in the figures above.
Macroeconomic, AI-search and regulatory risks
Bernstein analyst Mark Shmulik described the investment outlook as unusually difficult, writing, “If investing in US tech stocks was difficult right now, underwriting Google might be the closest thing to impossible,” according to Forbes. Shmulik’s remark was an analyst’s view, not company guidance. Forbes’s account cited recession, tariff, AI-search and regulatory uncertainty as issues investors were considering; it did not establish how much any one concern affected the immediate stock reaction.
