But the small revenue gain came with a steep drop in earnings: net income fell 34%, and operating margin narrowed to 24% from 29%. The company announced the results on February 2, 2023.
What Alphabet reported for Q4 2022
The $76.048 billion figure is Alphabet’s total consolidated revenue—not Google advertising revenue alone. Reported revenue grew 1% year over year; Alphabet said growth would have been 7% on a constant-currency basis, which removes the effect of exchange-rate movements. The distinction matters: the business grew more quickly before currency effects, but the reported figure investors saw was close to flat.
| Metric | Q4 2021 | Q4 2022 | Year-over-year change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue | $75.325 billion | $76.048 billion | +1% reported |
| Operating income | $21.885 billion | $18.160 billion | Down about 17% |
| Operating margin | 29% | 24% | Down 5 percentage points |
| Net income | $20.642 billion | $13.624 billion | Down about 34% |
| Diluted earnings per share | $1.53 | $1.05 | Down about 31% |
These figures are from Alphabet’s Q4 2022 earnings release filed with the SEC. They show why revenue alone gives an incomplete picture: sales edged up while operating income, net income and diluted earnings per share all fell.
Where the revenue came from
Alphabet reports Google Services, Google Cloud and Other Bets as segments. Services remained by far the largest, but it contracted; Cloud grew quickly from a smaller base.

|---|---|---|---|

The segment figures and reported growth rates are in the SEC-filed earnings release. Growth in Cloud, Other Bets and hedging gains more than offset the decline in Services in the total, though hedging gains are not a customer-facing business line.
Advertising weakened, with different results by product
Advertising remained Alphabet’s main revenue engine, but its major categories were down from the unusually strong year-earlier quarter. On the earnings call, the company reported roughly $59.0 billion in total Google advertising revenue. Search and other advertising brought in $42.6 billion, down 2%; YouTube advertising was about $8.0 billion, down 8%; and Google Network advertising was about $8.5 billion, down 9%.

Google Services revenue should not be confused with advertising revenue. Services also includes subscriptions, hardware, Play and other products, which together helped cushion the ad decline. Alphabet said Services “other revenues” were about $8.8 billion, up 8%, with growth from YouTube Music Premium and YouTube TV subscribers and strong hardware revenue, particularly Pixel devices. Google Play revenue was weaker, including pressure from foreign exchange and lower Play Store fees. These product-level figures and explanations were given on Alphabet’s Q4 2022 earnings call.
Cloud grew, but was not yet profitable
Google Cloud generated $7.315 billion in Q4 revenue, up 32% year over year, but reported an operating loss of $480 million. Alphabet said Google Cloud Platform grew faster than the segment overall, while customer efforts to optimize costs slowed consumption. The result was strong sales growth without segment operating profitability in this quarter. The earnings call also contains the company’s discussion of Cloud performance.

Other Bets, a collection of businesses outside the main Google segments, reported $226 million in revenue and an operating loss of $1.631 billion. Its small revenue contribution did not materially change the quarter’s dependence on Google Services and advertising.
Why earnings fell while revenue rose
Alphabet faced both softer advertising conditions and a higher cost base. On the earnings call, executives cited increased operating expenses, including higher research-and-development spending, headcount-related costs and general-and-administrative expenses that included legal-related charges. Total costs of revenue were $35.3 billion, up 7% year over year, while operating expenses were $22.5 billion, up 10%.
The company also identified a $1.2 billion inventory-related charge within other costs of revenue, connected to hardware pricing pressure and revised expectations for future inventory needs. That is an accounting charge, not evidence that Alphabet paid $1.2 billion in cash during the quarter. Foreign-exchange effects weighed on reported revenue growth, and the comparison was against Q4 2021, when advertising had been exceptionally strong. Together, weaker ad trends and rising costs help explain the gap between modest revenue growth and the sharp decline in profit. Alphabet discussed the cost items on its earnings call.

Before the release, analysts surveyed by FactSet expected approximately $76.2 billion in revenue and $1.18 in adjusted earnings per share, according to the Associated Press report. Alphabet’s $76.048 billion in reported revenue was slightly below that revenue estimate. Its $1.05 diluted GAAP EPS was also below the cited adjusted-EPS expectation, though the measures are not identical: one is reported diluted EPS and the other is an analyst estimate on an adjusted basis.

What the quarter says—and does not say—about Alphabet
The Q4 results point to a business in transition rather than a simple revenue collapse. Advertising was still dominant, but Search, YouTube and Network ads all declined year over year. Subscriptions and hardware helped offset some of the weakness, and Cloud expanded rapidly, yet Cloud remained loss-making. At the company level, revenue held up while margins and earnings contracted.
That context also clarifies the role of artificial intelligence in Alphabet’s commentary. Management described AI as a strategic investment and a future opportunity; the reported results do not establish that AI materially drove Q4 revenue. Search remained the largest contributor to revenue growth on a constant-currency basis, while Cloud momentum, YouTube subscriptions, Pixel devices and cost restructuring were among the other themes management highlighted in the earnings release.
For the full year, Alphabet reported $282.836 billion in revenue, up 10% from 2021, and $59.972 billion in net income. Advertising totaled $224.473 billion—most of the year’s revenue—according to the company’s 2022 annual filing. The annual picture reinforces the quarter’s central tension: a large, still-profitable advertising base, faster-growing Cloud, and mounting pressure to control costs.
