That was not a public launch: the company announced no product name, release date or detailed features. In April, Alibaba Cloud unveiled Tongyi Qianwen, the enterprise-focused model that became the public starting point for Alibaba’s later Qwen family.
What Alibaba confirmed on February 8, 2023
Alibaba confirmed that it was developing a ChatGPT-style tool and that the system was undergoing internal testing. The statement followed a report by China’s 21st Century Herald that employees could try the chatbot. Reuters’ contemporaneous account, republished by Euronews, distinguishes that media report from what Alibaba itself confirmed: the company did not publicly verify the employee-access detail. An Alibaba spokesperson also said the company had focused on large language models and generative AI since the formation of its DAMO Academy in 2017. This framed the test as part of longer-running AI work, not evidence that a finished chatbot had been rushed from concept to market.
What was still unknown
Alibaba had not announced a public release timetable or final product name. It did not provide model size, training data, benchmark results, supported languages, safety controls, pricing or global availability. Internal testing establishes that a development version was being evaluated; it does not establish production readiness, reliability or performance comparable to ChatGPT.

The reported possibility of integration with DingTalk, Alibaba’s workplace communication platform, was also unconfirmed. The Chinese media report raised the idea, but Alibaba declined to confirm it. It should not be treated as a product decision.
Why the news mattered—and what “competitor” means
The confirmation came as technology companies responded to ChatGPT’s rapid rise after its public release in late November 2022. Google had announced Bard, Microsoft had outlined plans to bring OpenAI technology to Bing, and Baidu was testing its Ernie Bot. Alibaba’s announcement was part of a wider race, not proof that it was the first Chinese company pursuing a conversational AI system.

Calling Alibaba’s project a “ChatGPT competitor” is useful shorthand for its category and strategic context. It is not a claim that the February test matched ChatGPT’s capabilities, served the same audience or was publicly available. The subsequent product strategy helps explain the distinction: Alibaba emphasized cloud services, enterprise customization, APIs and business applications.

What Tongyi Qianwen was designed to do
Alibaba Cloud presented Tongyi Qianwen as a large language model for Chinese- and English-language use cases, with enterprise customization, API access and integration into Alibaba applications among its planned uses. The company said it would be integrated across parts of its ecosystem, including enterprise communication, intelligent voice assistance, e-commerce, search, navigation and entertainment. Those were announced plans; they should not be read as proof that every integration was immediately available.

Alibaba said enterprise customers in China could access the model for beta testing and developers could apply for API beta access. That geographic and access qualification matters: the announcement did not establish worldwide public availability. A contemporaneous company-results document later reported more than 200,000 beta-testing requests; that figure refers to requests, not confirmed users, completed deployments or paying customers. Alibaba’s later materials describe Qwen as a family of large language and multimodal models, supported by consumer applications, cloud infrastructure and agentic-AI products. Alibaba’s Qwen App is a consumer-facing development, while Alibaba Cloud’s model and infrastructure services address developers and organizations. This is the project’s later evolution; it should not be projected backward onto the February 2023 test.

The available announcements support treating Tongyi Qianwen as the public continuation of Alibaba’s ChatGPT-style effort and Qwen as its later model-family branding. They do not make the February announcement a product specification or a promise of any particular present-day service, regional access or price.
