Reuters separately reported that the financing implied a valuation of about $4.5 billion, making SenseTime one of the most prominent AI startup funding stories of that year. The $600 million was the round’s total—not a disclosed amount invested by Alibaba alone—and SenseTime did not publish a valuation in its announcement.
What happened in the April 2018 financing?
SenseTime announced the Series C on April 9, 2018, in an announcement published the following day. Alibaba Group took the lead-investor role; Temasek and Suning also participated. SenseTime said the funding would support its AI platform, technological innovation, broader industrial applications and global expansion. SenseTime’s announcement characterized the round as another funding record for the AI sector.
The round size was not Alibaba’s individual check
The $600 million figure refers to the whole Series C. SenseTime did not disclose how much Alibaba invested, so it should not be described as Alibaba’s contribution. Alibaba’s role as lead investor is established; its specific share of the round is not.
Was SenseTime officially valued at $4.5 billion?
Not in SenseTime’s own announcement. Reuters reported on April 9, 2018 that the round implied a valuation of about $4.5 billion, citing people familiar with the matter. That is a reported valuation, not a figure SenseTime publicly confirmed in its funding announcement. Reuters’ report is the source for the $4.5 billion estimate.

Contemporaneous coverage also used descriptions such as “above $3 billion.” Such headlines and summaries do not necessarily refer to the same source or wording as Reuters’ approximately $4.5 billion figure. Keep the distinction clear: $600 million was the announced financing amount, while about $4.5 billion was Reuters’ reported implied company valuation.
How did the round fit SenseTime’s funding history?
The April 2018 Series C followed a $410 million Series B that SenseTime announced in July 2017. The company described that earlier round as a record single financing in AI. SenseTime’s Series B announcement provides the company’s account of that financing.

The April round was not SenseTime’s last major financing of 2018. In May, Reuters reported a further $620 million round led by Fidelity International, Hopu Capital, Silver Lake and Tiger Global, at a valuation above $4.5 billion. Reuters’ May report places that later round in context.
| Financing | Reported amount | What the cited source establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Series B, July 2017 | $410 million | Amount announced by SenseTime. |
| Series C, April 2018 | $600 million | Amount announced by SenseTime; led by Alibaba, with Temasek and Suning participating. |
| Further financing, May 2018 | $620 million | Amount reported by Reuters; led by Fidelity International, Hopu Capital, Silver Lake and Tiger Global. |
What did SenseTime say it was building?
SenseTime presented itself as an AI platform company and algorithms supplier. In its announcement, it described applications spanning facial and image recognition, autonomous driving, medical imaging and deep-learning hardware optimization. These are the company’s descriptions of its own work, not an independent assessment of its technology or market position.

SenseTime also reported more than 400 enterprise partnerships at the time and cited prior collaborations with Qualcomm, Honda, Suning and MIT. That partnership count and those examples come from the company’s announcement; they should be treated as company-reported claims.
Why was Alibaba involved?
The round represented both financing and a strategic relationship. Joe Tsai, Alibaba Group’s executive vice chairman, said in SenseTime’s April 10, 2018 announcement: “Our business at Alibaba is already seeing tangible benefits from our investments in AI and we are committed to further investment.” His statement connects the investment to Alibaba’s stated interest in applying AI in its own business, but does not disclose the size of Alibaba’s check.

What did “world’s most valuable AI startup” mean?
It was a description used in 2018 coverage of the reported valuation, not a current ranking. The available financing accounts establish the April round, Reuters’ attributed valuation estimate and the subsequent May financing. They do not establish that SenseTime is the world’s most valuable AI startup today, or provide a present-day comparison across AI companies.
For readers comparing headlines about the deal, check four things: whether a number refers to the round or the company’s valuation, whether it came from SenseTime or unnamed sources cited by a news outlet, the date of the financing, and whether “most valuable” is a sourced ranking or headline shorthand.
