On March 12, 2024, Beijing-based AI startup AIsphere announced a funding round of more than 100 million yuan, reported at the time as approximately US$14 million. Led by Fortune Capital, the round was intended to support PixVerse, AIsphere’s generative-video product, which the company positioned as a competitor to OpenAI’s Sora. The dollar amount is approximate; the funding report did not disclose a valuation or full investor list. South China Morning Post reported the announcement.
What AIsphere’s funding announcement said
AIsphere’s announcement came amid intense attention to generative AI following OpenAI’s February 2024 Sora reveal. The round was reportedly the company’s third fundraising effort in China within a month, but that wording does not establish a conventional third financing round or the company’s complete fundraising history. The amount was more than 100 million yuan, rendered as approximately $14 million in contemporary coverage, and Fortune Capital was identified as the lead investor. Terms such as valuation, ownership percentage, and the contributions of other investors were not disclosed.
The deal fit a wider Chinese investment push into generative AI. The SCMP report placed it alongside Alibaba-led investments in companies including MiniMax and Moonshot AI. AIsphere, however, was focused on video generation, rather than positioning itself primarily as a general-purpose chatbot developer.
Who founded AIsphere, and what was PixVerse?
AIsphere was founded in April 2023 by Wang Changhu, who previously held a vision-technology leadership role at ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company. The company promoted a “ByteDance gene,” connecting its founder’s experience to large-scale video products such as Douyin and TikTok. Contemporary reporting also said it recruited people from Tencent, Kuaishou, and Microsoft Research; it did not specify the hires’ number, seniority, or roles.

PixVerse was AIsphere’s text-to-video product. A version for overseas users launched in January 2024, and a domestic beta was released on March 11, the day before the funding announcement. AIsphere described a commercial path that began with video-generation services for creators, with a longer-term ambition to deliver AI-generated content directly to users. Tech Times’ contemporary coverage also discussed that commercialization direction.
Why AIsphere invoked OpenAI’s Sora
Sora had become a high-profile reference point after OpenAI announced it in February 2024 as a system that could create detailed video clips from written prompts. Calling PixVerse a Sora rival gave investors and readers a familiar comparison, but it was AIsphere’s competitive positioning—not an independent finding that the products had equivalent quality, access, reliability, clip length, or distribution.

Wang said AIsphere aimed to catch up with Sora within three to six months. Tech Times described the ambition in stronger terms as surpassing Sora’s capabilities, while SCMP reported the more restrained “catch up” framing. Neither version is evidence that the target was achieved. The contemporary coverage supplied no independent, apples-to-apples benchmark establishing parity or superiority.
What the funding might enable—and what remains unknown
For a video-generation startup, new capital could support model development, compute, hiring, infrastructure, and product distribution. Those are plausible needs, not disclosed uses of this particular round: the cited funding reports do not provide a budget or allocation. Nor do they establish AIsphere’s revenue, user count, model-training data, or the economics of serving video at scale.

Contemporary commentators raised broader concerns about whether Chinese AI developers could keep pace with U.S. frontier companies and whether generative-AI startups could find durable applications, proprietary data, and a credible route to commercialization. Those were attributed concerns, not findings about AIsphere’s financial condition or technical capabilities. Tech Times reported those concerns in the context of the funding story.

- Established: AIsphere announced a round of more than 100 million yuan, with Fortune Capital as lead investor; the company had launched PixVerse overseas and released a domestic beta; and Wang stated a three-to-six-month catch-up goal.
- Not established by the cited coverage: a disclosed valuation, full investor list, technical parity or superiority over Sora, completion of the stated target, revenue, or user numbers.
Funding can buy time and resources to build a product, but it does not by itself demonstrate model performance or a sustainable business. The “Sora rival” label should therefore be read as a description of the company’s ambition in 2024, not as a verified benchmark result.

Where PixVerse stands in 2026
PixVerse’s official site now presents a broader video-generation and production platform, listing models including V6, C1, and R1, alongside Web, Agent, Marketing Hub, Canvas, API, and CLI offerings. Its positioning spans text- and image-to-video creation, marketing workflows, and enterprise and developer services. The current platform is distinct from the early-2024 product snapshot; today’s model names and offerings should not be read back into what PixVerse could do when AIsphere raised the money. See PixVerse’s official product site.
The homepage lists PixVerse V6 at $4.80 per minute in an API comparison section. That is an API price signal, not a stated consumer subscription price, and it is not a like-for-like comparison with Sora or evidence of 2024 pricing. Developers can consult the PixVerse API platform and official API documentation for current access and technical details.
Sora’s status has since changed
OpenAI says the Sora web and app experiences were discontinued on April 26, 2026. The Sora API is scheduled to be discontinued on September 24, 2026, according to OpenAI’s discontinuation notice. That makes Sora a historical comparator in this funding story, not a current consumer-product recommendation for readers choosing a video-generation workflow.
