AI shopping tools differ in what a “budget” actually does: it might filter recommendations, trigger a price alert, or limit an authorized purchase. They also differ in whether you approve every checkout and where order records live. Amazon Alexa for Shopping, ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Shopify Shop each document some of these controls, but availability and merchant support vary.
How the shopping controls compare
| Tool | Budget and price controls | Purchase approval or delegation | Receipts and order records |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amazon Alexa for Shopping (formerly Rufus) | Search by price, track prices and price history, and set target-price or scheduled actions. | Some scheduled actions add an item to your cart for review and checkout. Eligible shoppers can enable Auto Buy to purchase at a set price. | Can help track packages and order status. The cited announcement does not specify a separate receipt dashboard. |
| ChatGPT Shopping Research and Search | You can specify a budget and other constraints, then refine product results. Product listings may show prices. | Instant Checkout appears only for eligible products and merchants. The merchant validates and processes the order. | Checkout confirmation and order state come from merchant systems; check the merchant’s email or order page. |
| Google Gemini shopping | Compare products and set a target amount for price tracking. Google described Universal Cart as tracking price drops and stock. | Gemini checkout asks you to review the details and choose Pay with Google Pay. Google says its price-triggered checkout asks permission and confirms purchase and shipping. Broader AP2 spending guardrails were announced for future rollout, not confirmed as available to every shopper. | Gemini’s My Orders view can show merchant, order total, status, payment method, and order ID. The merchant also sends a confirmation email. |
| Shopify Shop connected agent | If you enable delegated payment, you can set a weekly, monthly, or total budget. | By default, the agent prepares checkout for your review and approval. You can optionally allow purchases within your chosen budget without manual approval. | Shop can use order data for tracking, including orders associated with email receipts received at the connected address. |
These are vendor-documented features, not independent tests of purchase success, savings, privacy, or reliability. For each service, access depends on the account, country, product, and merchant. What “budget” means in practice
A budget prompt is not automatically a hard cap on what can be charged. Before relying on one, identify which of these functions the service actually offers:
- Search constraint: “Men’s jeans under $40” or “Find me a new laptop for university under £800” narrows discovery. It does not, by itself, authorize a purchase or guarantee the final checkout total.
- Price tracking or target: An alert or target price tells you when a product reaches a threshold. That is different from a purchase instruction.
- Conditional purchase: An enabled automatic action may buy when its stated criteria are met. Confirm whether it is available for the item and merchant, and what approval is required.
- Delegated spending limit: A weekly, monthly, or total limit can bound a connected agent’s authority if the feature is enabled. Shopify Shop documents this as an optional setting for delegated payment.
Google’s May 2026 Universal Cart and AP2 announcement described agents acting only when specified criteria and spending limits are met, and said AP2 would begin arriving in Google products in the coming months. Treat that as an announced rollout, not evidence that every Gemini shopper already has those controls. See Google’s Universal Cart and AP2 announcement.

Who actually handles payment and the order?
The shopping assistant, checkout interface, payment processor, and seller are not necessarily the same party. This matters if an order is delayed, changed, or disputed.
- ChatGPT Instant Checkout: OpenAI’s Agentic Commerce Protocol documentation says merchant systems validate orders, determine fulfillment, charge the payment method, and confirm the order. OpenAI says it is not the merchant of record. Instant Checkout is limited to eligible products and merchants. See OpenAI’s Agentic Commerce Protocol key concepts.
- Google Gemini: The documented flow has you review order details and select Pay with Google Pay; purchases are limited to selected merchants and supported countries. A Gemini order listing is useful for status, but the merchant remains the relevant contact for seller-side issues.
- Shop connected agents: Shop says approving a purchase or enabling delegated buying results in purchases as if you placed them. Connected agents may receive account information, and their own privacy terms govern their use of it.
- Amazon Alexa for Shopping: Amazon describes shopping across its app, site, and Echo Show, with some eligible automatic purchase actions. Check the order in Amazon’s own account experience for seller and order-specific details.
Where each tool fits
Choose Amazon for shopping within Amazon
Alexa for Shopping is Amazon’s current name for the assistant formerly called Rufus. Amazon says it is rolling out to U.S. shoppers through the Amazon app and website and on Echo Show. Signed-in Amazon customers can use the app or site without Prime or an Echo device. Echo Show is an optional voice-and-touch access point, not a requirement. Amazon also describes price alerts, scheduled actions, cart review, and eligible Auto Buy purchases; check that Auto Buy is enabled and available before assuming an item will be bought automatically. See Amazon’s Alexa for Shopping announcement and its earlier Rufus feature announcement.

Choose ChatGPT for constrained comparison, with checkout only where supported
Shopping Research is designed to turn several requirements into a comparison or buyer’s guide with merchant links; it is not itself a purchase authorization. OpenAI says product results are independently selected rather than ads or partnership-influenced. Prices and availability may be stale, so verify them with the retailer. Instant Checkout is a separate, limited option for eligible merchants and products. Read OpenAI’s Shopping Research guide and Shopping with ChatGPT Search.
Choose Gemini if you want Google shopping features and an order view
Gemini supports product discovery and comparison, checkout for selected merchants, and a My Orders view. Its help page requires a personal Google account and lists supported countries; availability is not universal. Google’s separate agentic-checkout announcement describes a user-permission step for price-triggered purchases and merchant rollout. Google also reported that its Shopping Graph contained more than 50 billion product listings, with 2 billion updated hourly, in its 2025 announcement. Those are company-reported catalog figures, not measures of agent accuracy or savings. See Google’s agentic checkout announcement.

Choose Shop when you want explicit delegated-spending settings
Shop’s connected-agent setup has a clear approval default: checkout is prepared for review, and paying without manual approval is optional. If you delegate payment, you can set weekly, monthly, or total budgets. Shop warns that an agent may be wrong about price, tax, stock, or returns, and that you remain responsible for purchases you approve or delegate. Review what account and purchase information the connected agent receives and its privacy terms. See Shop’s guide to using Shop with AI agents.

Checks to make before an agent buys
- Confirm the final price: Check tax, shipping, discounts, and any price change between recommendation and checkout.
- Confirm the seller and item: Verify the merchant, exact product or variant, quantity, and stock status.
- Know the approval mode: Distinguish a recommendation, a prepared checkout awaiting approval, and an enabled automatic purchase.
- Check the delivery and return terms: Confirm the shipping address, delivery estimate, and seller’s return policy before authorizing payment.
- Save the merchant’s confirmation: Keep the order email or seller order-page details for changes, cancellations, returns, and support; an assistant’s tracking view may not replace those records.
Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
