The often-repeated $85 million figure is not a confirmed campaign budget: it combines a reportedly $70 million domain purchase with an estimated, unconfirmed $15 million advertising cost.
The ad aired, then the launch stumbled
AI.com announced its product on February 6 and scheduled the consumer launch to coincide with Super Bowl LX on February 8, 2026 (AI.com’s launch announcement). Adweek described the spot as a 30-second commercial shown during the game’s fourth quarter. Its call to action was simple: visit AI.com and create a personal handle.
That direct funnel made the website the product’s first test. After the commercial aired, users reported that AI.com was unavailable, failed to load, or left them cycling through unsuccessful sign-up attempts. Adweek reported the disruption, and later coverage described the service as returning without establishing a verified duration, uptime record, or percentage of users affected (Adweek; Tom’s Hardware). The safest description is a highly visible launch disruption, not proof that the entire site stayed offline continuously.
Adweek also reported that 15 of 66 Super Bowl advertisements it analyzed promoted AI or AI companies, representing 23% of the ads in that dataset. That statistic describes the broader advertising market, not AI.com’s reach or conversion.

What the $85 million figure actually means
The headline number is an arithmetic construction from two different claims, not an audited disclosure from AI.com.
| Item | Reported amount | What is established |
|---|---|---|
| AI.com domain | $70 million | Financial Times reporting was repeated by other outlets; AI.com confirmed acquiring the domain but did not publish the price in its launch announcement (Decrypt; TechSpot). |
| Super Bowl advertising placement | About $15 million | An alleged or estimated media cost cited by Tom’s Hardware; AI.com did not confirm this amount in the primary material reviewed (Tom’s Hardware). |
| Combined framing | About $85 million | Simple addition of the two estimates, not a confirmed campaign budget. |
Accordingly, “AI.com spent $85 million on its campaign” is too definite. The defensible wording is that the launch involved a reportedly $70 million domain and an estimated $15 million advertisement, producing an estimated $85 million combined. That total may exclude creative production, agency fees, launch operations, cloud capacity, public relations, and other media. The domain figure has also been described as among the most expensive domain sales, but rankings depend on private-sale disclosures and methodology.
AI.com’s explanation: traffic and Google limits
CEO Kris Marszalek acknowledged “insane traffic levels” after the commercial and said the company had prepared for scale but not for the volume it received. Later, he attributed the disruption to Google rate limits at their global maximum (Tom’s Hardware).

- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
Reports indicate that onboarding depended heavily on connecting a Google account, so a third-party authentication quota is a plausible bottleneck. But no independent incident report, traffic graph, or Google confirmation establishes whether Google’s quota was the primary cause. A provider limit is also not the same thing as a failure of AI.com’s web servers.
What users could observe
- The domain became inaccessible or unreliable after the spot aired.
- Some users encountered repeated or failed sign-up steps.
- Google account connection was part of registration.
- Contemporary reports raised questions about card verification before meaningful product use (Decrypt).
What remains unproven
The public accounts do not establish peak requests per second, error rates, outage duration, failed-registration counts, successful handle claims, conversion, or retention. They also do not identify whether the limiting component was DNS or edge delivery, application concurrency, handle-reservation writes, Google OAuth, fraud controls, payment verification, agent provisioning, or a combination. Those are the questions a proper postmortem would need to answer.
What AI.com said it was launching
AI.com described a consumer platform for creating private, personal autonomous agents. Its announcement says agents can organize work, send messages, execute actions across applications, and build projects. It also presents longer-term examples such as workflow automation, calendar management, stock trading, and updating dating profiles (AI.com).

- Simple smart home control: Set routines, pair and control lights, locks, and thousands of smart home devices that work with Alexa without needing a separate smart home hub. With Omnisense technology, you can activate routines via temperature or presence detection.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot Max doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
The company further claims that agents can autonomously build missing capabilities and share improvements across a wider agent network. Those are AI.com’s product and vision claims, not capabilities independently demonstrated in the available reporting.
Available at launch versus promised later
- Launch experience: account and agent registration, including the handle-claiming flow.
- Promised functionality: agents taking actions across apps and managing multi-step work.
- Long-term vision: a decentralized network of self-improving agents and accelerated progress toward AGI.
That distinction matters financially and operationally. A registration funnel is not evidence that every advertised automation was already usable, while a difficult first step does not prove the company had no functioning product.

A normal product outage affects an existing audience. This incident synchronized a paid media burst with account creation, handle reservation, authentication, verification, and potentially agent provisioning. Every extra television viewer arrived within a narrow window, leaving little opportunity to throttle demand or fix the funnel quietly.

The brand also set unusually high expectations. A premium, category-defining domain and an AGI-oriented message imply immediate utility; reports instead described users confronting registration and verification before they could understand what the service did. That gap is an analysis of the launch experience, not proof that the underlying product was empty.

| Decision | Potential benefit | Risk exposed by this launch |
|---|---|---|
| Buy a premium domain | Memorability and category ownership | A large fixed cost arrives before product-market fit is demonstrated. |
| Launch with a Super Bowl spot | Immediate national awareness | A synchronized traffic spike can overwhelm the entire conversion path. |
| Use Google single sign-on | Less password friction for many users | Authentication quotas and provider dependency can become the effective capacity ceiling. |
| Require card verification | Potentially reduces abuse | Asking for payment details before users understand the product can reduce trust. |
| Offer autonomous agents | More useful than a purely conversational assistant | Permissions, privacy, safety, reliability, and liability become central operating costs. |
How to judge the campaign financially
Reach alone cannot establish return on investment. A high-traffic launch can be a marketing success in awareness while failing on registrations, activation, paid conversion, or retention. For this event, the missing measures are especially important: visitor volume, completed sign-ups, cost per activated user, subscription revenue, and retention after the launch window.
The outage also created an opportunity cost. Viewers who could not register encountered the failure at the precise moment the company had paid to create intent. Screenshots and complaints can spread even when the technical interruption is brief, making reputational damage disproportionate to the number of minutes involved.

Verdict
AI.com appears to have succeeded at generating attention but not at delivering a clean first-use experience. The central lesson is broader than whether a $70 million domain was worth buying: a mass-media launch must be engineered around the entire conversion path, including authentication, verification, data writes, abuse controls, and downstream product capacity.
The $85 million label should therefore remain qualified. The domain purchase is widely reported at $70 million, while the $15 million advertising figure is an estimate, and the combined amount is not a confirmed audited spend. Likewise, “the servers crashed” oversimplifies the evidence; AI.com became unavailable or unreliable, and its CEO cited traffic and Google rate limits without an independently verified root-cause report.
