Pay continued to rise: year-over-year base pay growth was 3.2%, while gross pay growth was 4.7%. Those figures point to ongoing hiring and wage growth, but they do not by themselves establish that ADP’s own business is weakening.
What ADP’s September jobs report says
ADP’s September 2026 National Employment Report recorded 90,000 additional private-sector jobs and reported year-over-year growth of 3.2% in base pay and 4.7% in gross pay. These are ADP’s estimates and pay measures, not a direct statement about every worker or employer.
The prior month was weaker: ADP’s report page says private-sector employment rose by 38,000 in August 2026, describing that month’s pace as the slowest since January. September’s 90,000 gain is larger than August’s, so the two monthly figures alone do not show a continued month-to-month slowdown.
How to read the hiring and pay figures
Employment
The 90,000 figure is ADP’s estimate of the change in private-sector employment for September. ADP’s report draws on aggregated and anonymized payroll data covering more than 26 million U.S. employees. ADP Research produces it in collaboration with Stanford’s Digital Economy Lab. Because it is built from ADP payroll data, it is a private-sector measure; it should not be treated as interchangeable with government employment statistics, which can differ in coverage and methodology.

Base pay and gross pay
ADP reported year-over-year base pay growth of 3.2% and gross pay growth of 4.7%. The measures are not identical: base pay refers to regular compensation, while gross pay reflects total pay. The figures indicate that pay was higher than a year earlier under both measures, with gross pay growing faster. They do not establish what an individual worker received or how much a household’s purchasing power changed.
Does this prove the labor market is cooling?
Not on its own. A single monthly estimate is a snapshot, and the August-to-September increase does not show a continuing decline in ADP’s measured hiring pace. The August report’s characterization of its result as the slowest since January signals a soft point in that series, but September’s larger gain complicates any simple narrative of steadily weakening hiring.

To assess the broader labor market, readers would need to compare several periods and other indicators using comparable reference dates. Coverage matters: ADP’s report concerns private payrolls, while government measures may cover a different employment universe. The figures here do not provide enough evidence for a numerical comparison with another series.

ADP is both a commercial provider of payroll and human-resources services, serving organizations from small businesses to global enterprises, and the publisher of a payroll-derived employment report. That connection helps explain the report’s data source, but the employment estimate is not a measure of ADP’s own revenue, customer demand, or outlook.

ADP’s investor-relations page lists July 29, 2026 as the release date for its fourth-quarter and fiscal 2026 results and says the company provided a fiscal 2027 outlook. The available result information does not identify a specific declining business metric or a weakened outlook. Without such a measure and its comparison period, the claim that ADP’s own business “feels the chill” is not established by the facts presented here.
