A Fake Target Gift-Card Site Appeared in a Google Ad—and a Reddit User Spotted the Phishing Trap

A reported 2022 Google Search ad led to a fake Target gift-card page. Here is what the Reddit discovery established, what it did not, and how to protect your gift-card codes and accounts.

A January 16, 2022 report described a Google Search ad leading to a fake Target gift-card page. The page reportedly copied Target’s appearance, sent ordinary links to Target’s real website, and collected gift-card numbers and security codes at a different destination. Reddit user u/Popdoodles reportedly highlighted the page in r/assholedesign, according to TechTimes.

The incident is a reported event, not a documented Google or Target confirmation. The available evidence does not establish the advertiser, how long the ad ran, how many people clicked, whether anyone lost money, or whether either company publicly responded.

What the reported Target gift-card scam did

  1. A user searching for a Target gift-card term allegedly saw a sponsored result near the top of Google Search.
  2. The ad opened a page designed to resemble a Target gift-card registration or redemption page.
  3. Links that appeared ordinary reportedly redirected to genuine Target pages, adding credibility.
  4. The gift-card number and security code were allegedly sent to a separate destination controlled by the scammer.

The reported domain included the words “bristolhirevan,” rather than a Target-owned domain. That mismatch was the clearest warning sign. The report described possible attempts to obtain other information, but it does not prove that passwords, payment-card numbers, or Target account credentials were stolen in this incident.

Gift-card codes function much like cash. An unused code can potentially be redeemed or resold once exposed, although the available reporting documents no confirmed redemption or financial loss.

Why the page looked convincing

Copied branding and layout

Scammers can reproduce a retailer’s colors, logos, wording, and page structure without any relationship with the retailer. A polished design is not proof of ownership.

Legitimate links mixed with a malicious form

A page can send some navigation links to the real Target website while directing the form that captures a code elsewhere. Checking one link is therefore not enough; inspect the destination that receives the information.

Paid placement created false authority

A sponsored result is an advertisement purchased through Google. Its position does not mean Target operates the destination, Google guarantees it, or a regulator has verified the business.

What “Google approved” does—and does not—mean

The headline phrase describes an ad being allowed to run; it is not evidence that Google personally endorsed the site or admitted this particular failure. Google’s policies prohibit phishing, impersonation, misleading business identity, and deceptive landing pages. Its policy materials say enforcement combines automated systems with human review, and serious violations can lead to suspension without advance warning.

Visa Physical Gift Card $200 (plus $6.95 Purchase Fee)
  • Gift Cards are shipped active and ready for use.
  • This card is non-reloadable. No cash or ATM access. Funds do not expire. If available funds remain on your card after the valid thru date has passed, please call customer service for a replacement card. A one-time purchase fee applies at the time of checkout. No fees after purchase.
  • To access your card information safely, type the complete website address shown on your Gift Card (MyGift.GiftCardMall.com) directly into your browser's address bar. Don't use search engines or shortened versions of the website address, as these may lead you to fake or fraudulent sites. Do not provide any Gift Card details (example: Card Number) to someone you do not know or trust. If you believe you've reached an illegitimate website, contact cardholder service at 1-888-524-1283. Be cautious of phishing sites, there are a variety of scams in which fraudsters try to trick others into paying with gift cards.
  • To report your Lost or Stolen Physical Visa Card, call Customer Service 24/7 at 1 (888) 524-1283 to cancel your Gift Card as soon as you can. You will be asked to provide the Gift Card number and other identifying information.
  • Use your Visa Gift Card in the U.S. everywhere Visa debit cards are accepted, including online.

Those rules establish what is prohibited, not how this ad passed review. The available sources do not show whether the page changed after review, used redirects or conditional content, evaded automated checks, or was simply active for a short period. Google’s policy also prohibits cloaking and other attempts to bypass enforcement, but no specific technique is established here. See Google’s advertising-policy overview, unacceptable-business-practices policy, phishing-suspension guidance, misrepresentation policy, and policy on bypassing enforcement.

How to check a sponsored result before entering information

  • Read the actual domain. Do not rely on the brand name in the headline. Look for the retailer’s known domain and be cautious with unrelated words, misspellings, extra hyphens, or unfamiliar country-code domains.
  • Use a trusted entry point. Type the retailer’s address yourself or use a bookmark instead of clicking an unexpected promotion.
  • Treat HTTPS correctly. A padlock encrypts the connection; it does not prove that the site belongs to Target. Deceptive domains can also use HTTPS.
  • Compare the offer with the official gift-card page. Urgency, “verification” demands, unusually large discounts, or claims that registration unlocks a reward are warning signs.
  • Never disclose a code casually. Do not enter gift-card numbers, PINs, security codes, passwords, or payment details into a page reached through a questionable ad.

For this incident, the unrelated “bristolhirevan” domain mattered more than the page’s Target-like appearance.

What to do if you interacted with the page

If you only clicked

Close the page and do not download files, install extensions, or return to it. A click alone does not prove that your device or accounts were compromised.

If you entered a gift-card number or security code

  1. Stop using the page and preserve its full URL, screenshots, time, and any receipt or transaction details.
  2. Contact Target through a known official channel, not a link on the suspicious page, and ask what protective steps are available.
  3. Report the advertisement using Google’s ad-reporting controls.

Neither the report nor the available policy documents promise recovery of a gift-card balance. The outcome depends on timing, whether the code was redeemed, and the companies’ investigation.

If you entered a password

Change it immediately anywhere it was reused, beginning with the affected account, and enable multifactor authentication.

  • Gift Card has no fees and no expiration date
  • Gift Card is affixed inside a mini envelope
  • Scan and redeem any Gift Card with a mobile or tablet device via the Amazon App
  • Gift amount may not be printed on Gift Cards

If you downloaded software or an extension

Disconnect from sensitive accounts while you investigate, remove the unwanted item, update security software, and seek professional help if suspicious activity continues.

What remains unknown

  • The identity of the advertiser or account owner.
  • The ad’s duration and geographic reach.
  • The number of clicks, victims, or confirmed losses.
  • Any public response from Google or Target.
  • The technical method, if any, used to evade review.

The documented lesson is narrower but important: a Google ad label signals paid placement, not retailer authentication. Verify the domain and use a trusted route before treating any gift-card page as genuine.
