Nintendo’s net sales fell 30.3% in the fiscal year ended March 31, 2025, to ¥1,164.9 billion from ¥1,671.8 billion a year earlier. That was a full-year decline—not a single-quarter drop—and it came before the Switch 2 launched on June 5, 2025. The following fiscal year, which included the launch, brought net sales of ¥2,313.0 billion and Switch 2 hardware sales of 19.86 million units.

How much did Nintendo’s net sales decline?

Nintendo reported consolidated net sales of ¥1,164.9 billion for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2025, down 30.3% from ¥1,671.8 billion in FY2024. The figures were reported in contemporary coverage of Nintendo’s results; the company’s financial reporting uses the term “net sales.” GamesBeat’s report on Nintendo’s FY2025 results gives the comparison.

The decline in sales was not the same as the decline in profit. Nintendo reported profit attributable to owners of the parent of ¥278.8 billion, down 43.2% from ¥490.6 billion in FY2024. These are distinct measures: net sales describe revenue, while profit reflects what remained after expenses and other items.

Why did Nintendo’s sales fall before the successor console arrived?

The results coincided with the late stage of the original Switch’s lifecycle. Contemporary coverage reported that Nintendo’s dedicated-platform business was down 30.9%; sales of original Switch hardware fell to 10.8 million units from 15.7 million in FY2024, while software sales fell to 155.4 million units from 199.67 million.

#1 Best Overall
Nintendo Switch 2 System
  • The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
  • Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
  • GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play

Those comparisons show a weaker year for the existing platform as Nintendo prepared its successor. They provide context for the decline, but the reported figures alone do not establish that any one factor caused the full change in net sales.

What did Nintendo forecast before the Switch 2 launch?

At its May 8, 2025 financial-results briefing, Nintendo forecast 15 million Switch 2 hardware units and 45 million Switch 2 software units for FY2026. These were management forecasts, not reported actual sales. Nintendo said the hardware target aimed to match original Switch sales during roughly the 10 months after that console launched in March 2017. In the official briefing, President and Representative Director Shuntaro Furukawa said: “We set this figure with the aim of reaching the same level of sales we achieved with Nintendo Switch in the roughly 10-month period between its launch in March 2017 and December that year.” Nintendo’s May 2025 briefing contains the forecast and Q&A.

When did Switch 2 launch, and what were the reported results?

Nintendo Switch 2 launched on June 5, 2025. Nintendo later reported that it sold more than 3.5 million Switch 2 units to consumers through retailers and direct sales during the first four days. That launch-period sell-through figure is different from sales volume to retailers.

For the full fiscal year ended March 31, 2026, Nintendo reported 19.86 million Switch 2 hardware units sold and overall net sales of ¥2,313.0 billion. The 19.86 million figure is a reported result for that fiscal year, not the earlier 15 million forecast. Nintendo’s FY2026 operating-results report provides the annual figures; its first-quarter FY2026 report defines the first-four-days consumer-sales figure.

What the numbers do—and do not—show

  • The 30.3% figure compares full-year net sales in FY2025 with FY2024; it is not a quarterly change.
  • Profit attributable to owners of the parent declined by a larger percentage, 43.2%, and should not be described as the sales decline.
  • The original Switch’s lower hardware and software unit sales are consistent with a weakening platform year, but the figures do not isolate the causes of the overall sales decline.
  • FY2026 includes the Switch 2 launch and a substantial increase in reported net sales; that later result does not change what happened in FY2025.
