RAC Insurance had received more than 2,700 claims totaling $4.9 million in damage after a severe-weather event affected Perth and other parts of Western Australia in August 2022, according to a PerthNow report published on 3 August. The figure was RAC’s reported claims total at that time—not a final estimate of all storm losses across WA.
How much damage was reported?
PerthNow reported that RAC Insurance had received more than 2,700 claims since noon Wednesday, with the claims totaling $4.9 million in damage. The report was published at 3:48pm on 3 August 2022. It did not establish a final, market-wide total for damage or claims across Western Australia. PerthNow’s report attributed the claims and damage figure to RAC Insurance.
What damage did the storm cause?
The report described damage including fences blown over, trees falling onto buildings and roads, roof damage, downed powerlines and flooding. It cited a ceiling collapse at a Joondalup home and a tree falling onto a shed in Kalamunda as examples, not a complete inventory of damage.
An unnamed RAC Insurance spokesperson described claims ranging in severity “from fences being blown over to trees causing major damage to properties.”

What did emergency and power figures show?
PerthNow reported that DFES received 405 calls for help across the state from 6:30am Tuesday, including 354 from the metropolitan region. It also reported 134 overnight calls about damage to homes, 119 of them in the metro area. These figures cover different periods and types of calls; they should not be added together as a single count.
At 12:30pm Wednesday, 13,200 properties were reported without power: 11,000 in the metro area and 2,200 in the South West. This was a snapshot reported during the storm’s aftermath, not a current outage figure.

How much rain fell?
PerthNow attributed rainfall figures to the Bureau of Meteorology: Perth Airport recorded 62.6 mm from the storm’s start on Monday, while rainfall across the metro area reached up to 62.8 mm. Bureau duty forecaster Jessica Lingard cautioned that strong winds could affect readings because rain blowing sideways may skip over a rain gauge. The figures should therefore be read with that measurement caveat.
