Its public notice did not name Nvidia or disclose the suspected practices. The authority also stressed that an inspection is not proof of a legal violation.
Did France raid Nvidia’s offices?
The Autorité de la concurrence said its investigators conducted an unannounced inspection on 26 September 2023 at an unnamed company suspected of anticompetitive practices in the graphics-card sector. The authority’s announcement the following day did not identify the company. The headline identification of Nvidia therefore should not be mistaken for a confirmation in the authority’s notice.
The inspection was authorized by a liberty and custody judge, according to the authority. It said it would not comment further on either the entity or the practices under examination. Read the authority’s 27 September 2023 announcement.
Why did France raid Nvidia?
The public announcement does not establish that Nvidia was the target, and it does not explain any specific theory of wrongdoing. It says only that the inspection concerned a company suspected of anticompetitive practices in the graphics-card sector. The authority linked the inspection to its focus on cloud computing, referring to its June 2023 opinion on that sector, but did not say that cloud providers were the target or specify a case theory.

- Axial-tech fan design features a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
- A 2.5-slot design maximizes compatibility and cooling efficiency for superior performance in small chassis
Did the inspection mean Nvidia was guilty?
No. The authority explicitly cautioned that an inspection is an investigative step, not a finding of infringement. In its English-language notice, it wrote: “Such dawn raids do not pre-suppose the existence of a breach of the law which could be imputed to the company involved in the alleged practices, which only a full investigation into the merits of the case could establish, if appropriate.”
That distinction matters: a judge-authorized search allows investigators to gather evidence, but does not itself establish that a company broke competition law. The notice made no finding against Nvidia.

What did France’s later AI opinion say about Nvidia and graphics cards?
In a 28 June 2024 opinion on competition in generative AI, the authority said the graphics-card sector involved in the September 2023 inspection remained under close scrutiny by its Investigation Services. It also discussed possible competition risks involving providers of IT components, including dependence on Nvidia’s CUDA programming software. These are sector-level concerns in a later opinion, not findings that Nvidia violated the law in the 2023 inspection.
The same opinion discussed possible cloud-provider lock-in, including financial incentives such as cloud credits and technical barriers to moving workloads between providers. Those broader observations help explain why the authority was examining competition across AI and cloud markets, but they do not reveal the undisclosed practices behind the inspection. What is known about the inspection’s outcome?
The authority’s public decisions index includes later digital-sector opinions and decisions, but the index does not establish a case-specific resolution of this inspection. That does not prove that no confidential or differently titled proceeding exists. The available public materials therefore do not support a definitive claim about the inspection’s final procedural outcome. Consult the authority’s opinions and decisions index.
