Microsoft announced about 4,800 job cuts on July 6, 2026—roughly 2.1% of its global workforce. The company said the reductions mainly affected its Commercial and Xbox organizations and reflected changing customer needs, business models and priorities. Chief People Officer Amy Coleman said the eliminated roles were not being replaced by AI, while acknowledging that AI is changing how work gets done.

What Microsoft said about the layoffs

In an employee communication published July 6, 2026, Microsoft Chief People Officer Amy Coleman said the company was aligning its investment, people and effort with shifting business priorities. She wrote: “Our customers’ needs are shifting, the business models that serve them are shifting, and that means the work itself – what we do, where we focus, and how we’re organized – has to transform too.”

Coleman identified Commercial and Xbox as the main areas affected. Her explanation is Microsoft’s stated rationale; it does not independently establish why each position was eliminated. Read Microsoft’s July 6 communication.

Did AI cause these specific cuts?

Microsoft’s answer was no: Coleman wrote, “I also want to be direct that the roles eliminated today are not being replaced by AI.” She also said AI is changing how work gets done and that some routine tasks can be automated. Those points belong together: Microsoft acknowledged AI’s effect on work, but explicitly denied that AI was replacing the roles eliminated in this announcement.

That distinction matters because public concern about AI-related job losses is broader than the evidence about this particular announcement. TechCrunch reported that the cuts stoked those concerns while also reporting Microsoft’s position. The available reporting does not establish AI as the direct cause of the July 6 cuts. TechCrunch’s coverage.

What the Xbox cuts add to the picture

The Associated Press reported that 1,600 Xbox workers were included in the reductions. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma described the business as unhealthy and said its margins were three to ten times lower than those of comparable platform and publishing businesses. She also pointed to rising console component costs as a hardware crisis. These are Sharma’s explanations for Xbox’s situation, as reported by AP—not an independent finding about all Microsoft job cuts.

Why financial and AI-investment context does not prove a cause

Microsoft reported $81.3 billion in revenue, up 17% year over year, for its FY2026 second quarter, which ended December 31, 2025. That company-wide result provides context, but it does not explain the July 2026 reductions. Microsoft’s FY2026 second-quarter results.

Microsoft’s later FY2026 fourth-quarter earnings-call transcript discusses AI investment and the company’s AI business, but does not identify AI as the cause of the July cuts. A company investing in AI while reducing staff does not, by itself, show that AI displaced the employees whose roles were eliminated. Microsoft’s FY2026 fourth-quarter earnings-call transcript.
