What Grammarly’s Apology Left Out: Julia Angwin’s Lawsuit

Superhuman’s apology over Grammarly Expert Review landed around the time journalist Julia Angwin filed a proposed class action alleging unauthorized commercial use of writers’ identities. The complaint is not a court finding.

The key context missing from Superhuman CEO Shishir Mehrotra’s apology was a lawsuit: journalist Julia Angwin had filed a proposed class action against Grammarly’s parent company, alleging that its Expert Review feature used writers’ names and identities in AI-generated feedback without permission. The complaint was filed in federal court on March 11, 2026, around the time of the apology. Its allegations have not been established by a court.

What was the apology about?

Grammarly launched Expert Review in August 2025. The feature offered writing suggestions framed around the perspectives of named writers and other experts. Mehrotra, CEO of Grammarly owner Superhuman, said it drew on publicly available information through third-party large language models.

After people whose names appeared in the feature criticized how it represented them, Mehrotra acknowledged “valid critical feedback.” He said the company had decided to disable Expert Review while reimagining it, with the aim of giving experts real control over how they were represented—or whether they were represented at all. Mehrotra’s statement

What did the apology leave out?

When Mehrotra apologized, Angwin had filed a proposed class action against Superhuman Platform, Inc. Futurism reported that the filing came on March 11, 2026, around the time of the apology. The lawsuit is an important part of the episode’s context: the dispute was not only about a feature provoking criticism, but also about a company facing litigation over the use of writers’ identities.

The timing does not establish that the lawsuit caused the apology or the decision to disable Expert Review. The available accounts establish that the filing and apology occurred around the same time, not why the company acted. Futurism’s report

What does Angwin’s lawsuit allege?

The complaint alleges that Expert Review used the names and identities of hundreds of journalists, authors, writers and editors to create commercial value for Grammarly and Superhuman without authorization. It describes the feature as providing real-time feedback associated with well-known writers. Those are allegations in a plaintiff’s filing, not findings that a court has ruled the company acted unlawfully.

Angwin is the sole named plaintiff, according to WIRED, and filed on behalf of a proposed class. The complaint says the class’s damages exceed $5 million. That figure is an amount asserted in the complaint, not money awarded by a court. The complaint · WIRED’s report

Angwin said she was “distressed to discover that a tech company is selling an imposter version of my hard-earned expertise.” Her statement reflects her position as plaintiff; it is not a judicial conclusion about the feature or the company’s conduct. Futurism’s report

How the two accounts differ

Account What it says What it establishes
Superhuman’s explanation The feature drew on public information and third-party language models to offer expert perspectives; the company said it would disable and rethink the feature. The company’s stated rationale and response, not a legal ruling about whether the use was authorized. Company statement
Angwin’s complaint The feature allegedly used writers’ names and identities commercially without permission. The claims Angwin brought in a proposed class action, not proof that the claims are true. Complaint
Court docket summary A June 15, 2026 motion by Superhuman sought to compel arbitration, enforce a class-action waiver and stay proceedings. The listed motion activity; the available summary does not establish how the court ruled or the case’s final disposition. Docket summary

What is known about the case’s status?

The docket summary lists Superhuman’s motion dated June 15, 2026, seeking arbitration, enforcement of a class-action waiver and a stay of proceedings. The available information does not show the motion’s outcome or a final disposition. A motion is a request to the court, not a ruling; the current status should be checked against the live docket before relying on a later update.

Why the omission changes the story

Without the lawsuit, the apology reads mainly as a response to backlash over a product that represented named experts without giving them control. With the filing in view, readers can also see that the same dispute had become a legal claim about allegedly commercial use of identities without consent. That context makes the apology more consequential, but it does not settle the central question: the complaint’s claims remain allegations unless and until established through the legal process.
