The Alliance of British Watch & Clock Makers says the watch and clock sector it surveyed generated about £206 million in revenue for the year ending April 2024, 65% above the £125 million figure reported in its first Bellwether survey in 2021. That is a trade-body comparison between two survey snapshots—not an official government statistic, nor evidence that UK factory output or the number of watches made rose by 65%.
What does the 65% figure measure?
It is the Alliance’s comparison of the revenue figures reported in its first Bellwether survey and Bellwether II. The Alliance announced the later result in July 2025, describing approximately £206 million for the year ending April 2024 against a £125 million baseline from 2021. It also reported an 18% compound annual growth rate over the three-year period. The first survey was produced by KPMG; the second was conducted by Skolorr. There is a qualification to the comparison: the 2021 account calls £125 million an estimated retail market value, calculated by applying retail margin to wholesale revenue. The 2025 announcement calls £206 million sector revenue. Without a full methodology showing that definitions and coverage are identical, the figures are best described as the Alliance’s reported Bellwether estimates—not a precisely harmonized national-accounts series. Is it a 65% rise in watches made, jobs or exports?
No. The headline percentage refers to the reported revenue comparison. The announcement does not establish an equivalent increase in units produced, employment, exports or output from factories located in the UK. Nor does it break the revenue change down into volume, prices, brand mix, exchange rates, changes in survey coverage or new business formation.

The Alliance reported more than 140 operating companies and approximately 1,600 jobs, including full-time, part-time and freelance work. Those figures describe the sector’s reported scale; they are not the basis of the 65% calculation. Alliance, Bellwether II
What does “British watch industry” mean here?
The Alliance’s sector covers watch and clockmaking across the British Isles, including the Republic of Ireland. “British” in this context is a sector label, not proof that every counted business is based in the UK or makes its products there. So the 65% result cannot be read as a UK-only manufacturing statistic. It measures reported revenue for the survey’s broader watch and clock sector, which includes firms with different business models and supply chains.
Did every company grow at that rate?
No. The survey indicates that growth was widespread among respondents but uneven across firms. More than 75% of responding companies said their revenue had grown over the preceding three trading years; 42% reported double-digit increases, and 30% reported growth of 300–400%. The Alliance also reported that 67% of currently operating businesses were founded since 2015. That points to a relatively young group of firms, but the survey does not quantify how much new business formation contributed to the sector’s revenue change.
Does the survey show strong demand or limited supply?
It reports signs of demand alongside a mixed picture of capacity. The Alliance gave an overall sell-through rate of 98%; 60% of companies said output was balanced, while 20% reported unmet demand and 20% surplus capacity. The Alliance cited supply-chain disruption, energy costs and inflation as headwinds. Its announcement does not quantify how much any one of those factors affected revenue, production or delivery times.

For Bellwether II, the Alliance reported that 53% of sales were in the UK, 28% in America, 8% in Europe and 4% in Gulf Cooperation Council countries. These reported shares show that the sector is not solely dependent on UK buyers. International demand was already part of the Alliance’s 2021 account, which described more than 100 watch and clockmaking brands and over one million timepieces produced in 2020. How reliable is the comparison?
The comparison is useful as an industry body’s account of sector growth, but the published announcements do not provide enough detail to independently assess sampling, response rates, weighting or the consistency of accounting definitions across both survey rounds. Treat the 65% as the Alliance’s reported estimate, not as a verified official measure.
HM Revenue & Customs publishes broad UK goods-trade statistics, but its 2024 release is not specific to watches and cannot validate this sector’s revenue claim. How to read the headline fairly
- Geography: The Bellwether sector covers the British Isles, not just UK businesses.
- Metric: The 65% applies to reported revenue estimates, not units, jobs, exports or UK factory output.
- Period: It compares a 2021 survey baseline with the later survey’s figure for the year ending April 2024.
- Source: It is a trade-body-commissioned survey comparison, not an official government time series.
