At launch, qualifying startups could apply for up to 20 free GitHub Enterprise seats for one year, plus onboarding and technical guidance. That is a historical offer: as of October 4, 2026, GitHub’s program page describes a different benefit—$10,000 in GitHub credits for up to 12 months—with specific eligibility and billing conditions.
What “generally available” meant in 2022
GitHub’s announcement made its startup program broadly available to applicants around the world. Founders, early employees and partners could apply. The launch offer covered up to 20 GitHub Enterprise seats free for one year and included startup-focused onboarding, regular office hours and best-practice support from technical experts. GitHub positioned the program as help with collaboration, security, automation, CI/CD and access to its developer community. GitHub’s September 22, 2022 announcement is the source for those launch terms.
The post was authored by Garrett Wood and quoted then-CEO Thomas Dohmke describing access to GitHub’s developer platform as a way to help entrepreneurs build and grow. The announcement also said GitHub was trusted by 90% of Fortune 100 companies; that figure is GitHub’s claim in the 2022 post, not an independently verified market statistic.
What GitHub offers startups now
GitHub’s current program page, checked October 4, 2026, describes a one-time credit grant of $10,000 for up to 12 months. Credits can be used across the GitHub Enterprise platform and eligible add-ons, including GitHub Copilot and GitHub Advanced Security. This is a credit-based offer, not the 2022 allotment of 20 free seats. See the current GitHub for Startups page for the live program terms.
#1 Best Overall
The duration is limited by both time and use: credits expire when they are consumed or after 12 months, whichever comes first. GitHub says active products then transition to standard paid billing. A startup should account for the ordinary ongoing subscription costs before activating products it may not be able to keep paying for after the grant ends.
Who can apply under the current terms?
GitHub’s current page lists these eligibility conditions:
Rank #2
- The startup is affiliated with an approved GitHub for Startups partner.
- It has outside funding up to Series B or earlier.
- It is new to Enterprise or returning after a gap: it must not have been on an Enterprise plan during the previous six months.
- It has not previously received GitHub credits or Enterprise licenses.
The offer applies only to the Enterprise account named in the application. It supports Enterprise Cloud accounts on GitHub.com, not GitHub Enterprise Server instances or Enterprises with Data Residency. Confirm both eligibility and account configuration with GitHub before budgeting around the credits.
How the launch offer differs from the current program
| Term | 2022 launch announcement | Current page, checked October 4, 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Benefit | Up to 20 free GitHub Enterprise seats | $10,000 in GitHub credits |
| Duration | One year | Up to 12 months; credits can expire earlier if consumed |
| Products | GitHub Enterprise; the announcement emphasized onboarding and technical guidance | GitHub Enterprise platform and eligible add-ons, including Copilot and Advanced Security |
| Eligibility | Global applications; founders, early employees and partners could apply | Approved partner affiliation, outside funding up to Series B, Enterprise use restrictions and no prior GitHub credits or Enterprise licenses |
| After the offer | Not stated in the launch announcement | Active products transition to standard paid billing when credits run out or the offer expires |
GitHub’s maintained program repository also summarizes 20 free Enterprise seats for a year and discounted Advanced Security. That description conflicts with the current program page’s $10,000 credit offer, so it should not be treated as confirmation that the launch terms remain available. Use the current program page for present-day offer details and verify terms directly before applying.

How long does applying take?
As of October 4, 2026, GitHub says applicants can expect an email response within 2–3 business days. This is the stated response window, not a promise of approval. Allow additional time to check eligibility and coordinate the right Enterprise account.

What to check before relying on the credits
- Confirm that the startup’s partner affiliation and funding stage meet the current criteria.
- Check the six-month Enterprise-use restriction and whether anyone at the company has previously received GitHub credits or Enterprise licenses.
- Verify that the application is tied to the correct Enterprise Cloud account; the grant does not support Enterprise Server or Data Residency Enterprises.
- Estimate which eligible products will use the credits and what standard billing will cost once the grant is consumed or expires.
- Review GitHub’s live terms before applying, because the current value, eligibility and billing conditions may change.
