Reports in 2025 said Foxconn asked Chinese engineers and technicians to return home from its iPhone factories in India. They did not report that those workers returned to India. Bloomberg reported more than 300 departures, while an Indian government official later said he expected no significant operational disruption. Whether staff subsequently returned remains unconfirmed in the available reporting.
What happened at Foxconn’s India iPhone factories?
On July 2, 2025, Bloomberg reported that Foxconn had asked hundreds of Chinese engineers and technicians to leave its iPhone factories in India and return to China. The report, citing people familiar with the matter, said the departures had begun about two months earlier and that more than 300 Chinese workers had left. That figure is a media-reported count from an unnamed source, not an official tally. Bloomberg’s report

The direction matters: the reports describe workers being recalled from India, not returning to India. The available accounts do not confirm whether any of them later went back.
Did the departures disrupt production?
In September 2025, S. Krishnan, secretary of India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, told reporters in Taipei that he expected the departures would not significantly affect Foxconn’s Indian operations. Reuters reported that Krishnan said the company was managing with local employees and staff from Taiwan and the United States. He referred to a plant near Chennai and a new plant being developed near Bengaluru. The Indian Express’s account of Reuters’ reporting

Krishnan said: “Although some of the Chinese workers had to leave because they were asked to return, operations did not really suffer significantly.” This was the official’s assessment, not a published measure of factory output or an independent production analysis.

The reports do not establish a confirmed reason for the recall. Bloomberg’s account did not identify one, and Krishnan said he did not know why the workers had been asked to return. Geopolitical explanations should therefore be treated as speculation, not as a confirmed cause.
What is known about staffing now?
The accounts cited here establish a reported staffing change in 2025, not Foxconn’s current workforce. The latest directly relevant official assessment in these reports dates to September 2025; they do not verify whether Chinese staff returned to India afterward or what their status is on October 8, 2026. Current staffing remains unresolved.
