ESPN, ABC and other Disney channels are no longer blocked on DIRECTV because of the 2024 dispute. Disney and DIRECTV announced an agreement in principle on September 14, 2024, and Disney said its full linear channel lineup had been restored to DIRECTV, DIRECTV STREAM and U-verse customers. Why were ESPN and ABC off DIRECTV?
The channels went dark after Disney and DIRECTV failed to agree on a new carriage contract. The interruption began September 1, 2024, affecting Disney’s linear channels for subscribers to the services involved.
The companies publicly disagreed about the terms. Disney said it sought rates in line with those paid by other distributors and argued that its programming and investment justified its position. Disney also said it had proposed sports-focused and entertainment-focused packages, including options pairing linear channels with streaming services. Those were Disney’s statements during negotiations, not an agreed account of why talks stalled.
DIRECTV said Disney rejected its request to temporarily restore channels for the presidential debate and other programming. That was DIRECTV’s account. On September 10, 2024, DIRECTV also said it was offering a $30 bill credit during the dispute; that was a historical offer, not a current remedy.

Yes. On September 14, 2024, the companies announced an agreement in principle and said channels had been restored while they worked to finalize a multi-year contract. The announcement covered continued carriage of Disney entertainment, sports and news channels, including:
- ESPN networks and ABC-owned stations
- Disney-branded channels
- Freeform and FX
- National Geographic
Disney’s announcement also said more than 90% of DIRECTV households watched Disney linear programming each month in 2023, attributing that figure to Nielsen. It is a figure Disney cited; the announcement is not the underlying Nielsen dataset.

What did the agreement offer customers?
The 2024 announcement described more flexible ways to access programming, including genre-specific sports, entertainment, and kids-and-family options. It also described Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+ in selected DIRECTV packages under a wholesale agreement and as a la carte options, plus rights for DIRECTV to distribute ESPN’s planned flagship direct-to-consumer service upon launch.
These are the options described when the agreement was announced. The announcement does not establish current 2026 package eligibility, prices, or the status of every service. Check DIRECTV’s current package details before choosing or changing a plan.

What to do if a DIRECTV channel is missing now
- Open DIRECTV’s TV Channel Dispute Center and check for area-specific updates about the channel.
- Confirm whether the missing channel is part of your current package and whether the issue affects one channel or several.
- If the dispute center does not explain the interruption, contact DIRECTV support to ask whether it is a local signal, account, or service issue.
The dispute center provides general channel-dispute information, but it does not identify a current Disney-specific outage. If ABC is the only channel you need, an over-the-air antenna may receive a local ABC broadcast where reception and station availability allow; it will not restore ESPN or the broader Disney cable lineup.

Disney’s September 4, 2024 statement said its priority was a deal that served DIRECTV and its customers while recognizing the value of its content and the investment needed to create and acquire it. The statement was issued by Dana Walden and Alan Bergman, co-chairmen of Disney Entertainment, and Jimmy Pitaro, chairman of ESPN. It reflected Disney’s position during the negotiations, not a neutral finding about the dispute.
