Choose a desktop PC by matching its exact configuration to the work you do, the space you have, and the peripherals you already own. There is no single best setup for everyone: compare the processor, memory, storage, graphics, form factor, ports, operating-system requirements, and the seller’s terms before you buy.
1. Start with what you’ll use it for
List the programs, games, and everyday tasks the computer needs to handle. General productivity, gaming, and creative applications can place very different demands on a PC, so use your actual workload—not a broad label like “home computer”—to guide the configuration.
Microsoft’s PC buying guide highlights the processor, RAM, SSD, and graphics as factors to consider, and recommends discrete graphics for gaming. Treat that as a starting point: check the requirements for the specific applications and games you plan to run.
2. Pick a form factor that fits your space and needs
A conventional tower and a compact mini PC can both serve as desktop computers, but they make different trade-offs. A mini PC takes up less room; a tower may offer more flexibility, depending on its design. Neither form factor guarantees a particular level of connectivity or upgradeability.

Check the dimensions, cooling arrangements, ports, and expansion details for the exact model. Microsoft’s overview of desktop computers describes mainstream and mini PC formats; compare the manufacturer’s specifications before assuming a machine will fit your desk or accommodate future components.
3. Compare the exact processor
Look up the full processor model in each candidate PC’s specifications. A family name or advertised clock speed alone does not tell you everything you need to know about how a particular system will perform for your workload.
If you plan to use Windows 11, Microsoft requires a compatible 64-bit processor with at least two cores and lists supported processors. Check the exact CPU against Microsoft’s Windows 11 requirements and the computer maker’s compatibility information.

- Model: Dell OptiPlex 7050 Small Form Factor (SFF)
- Processor: Intel Core i7-7700 3.60 GHz
- Memory: 32GB DDR4 Ram
- Storage: 1TB Solid State Drive (SSD) Fast Boot + Storage
- Operating System: Windows 11 Pro (64-bit)
4. Choose memory for the way you work
Windows 11 lists 4 GB of RAM as a minimum. That is an operating-system requirement, not a general recommendation for multitasking, gaming, or creative software. Use the needs of your applications to decide what capacity makes sense.
Also check whether the memory can be upgraded, and whether the manufacturer places limits on upgrades or warranty coverage. If two PCs have different amounts of RAM, compare both their included configurations and the cost and practicality of adding memory later.
5. Match storage capacity and type to your files and software
Windows 11 lists 64 GB of storage as its minimum, but installed applications and personal files can require substantially more space. Check the included drive’s capacity and type, and find out whether the system has additional slots or other compatible upgrade options.

NVMe storage is a specific requirement for certain Microsoft DirectStorage use cases, alongside compatible controller and graphics support. That feature-specific requirement does not mean every desktop buyer needs a particular SSD. See Microsoft’s DirectStorage requirements and confirm compatibility for the model and software involved.
6. Decide whether you need discrete graphics
Integrated graphics may be suitable for ordinary desktop tasks. Gaming and graphics-intensive applications may need a separate, discrete GPU, but the right choice depends on the software you intend to run.

7. Check ports, display support, and physical fit
Make a list of the peripherals you expect to connect, such as a keyboard, mouse, external storage, headset, or printer. Confirm that the specific PC has the ports and wireless connections you need. If you use multiple monitors, check the number and type of display outputs, supported resolutions, and the manufacturer’s stated display limits.
Measure the available desk or shelf space before choosing a tower or mini PC. Microsoft notes multi-monitor support among desktop configuration characteristics, but the practical limits depend on the actual model and its graphics hardware.

How to compare two desktop PCs
Put the exact configurations side by side rather than comparing model names alone. Use the same workload and peripherals as your reference point.

Windows 11 minimums are not shopping targets
Microsoft’s published Windows 11 minimum requirements include a compatible 64-bit processor at 1 GHz or faster with two or more cores, 4 GB of RAM, 64 GB of storage, DirectX 12-compatible graphics with a WDDM 2.0 driver, UEFI firmware capable of Secure Boot, TPM 2.0, and a display of at least 9 inches with 720p resolution. These figures describe minimum system requirements, not a recommended desktop configuration for demanding use. Check the current requirements and the exact PC’s specifications before purchase.
