Led by Doug Davis, the group aimed to combine Intel chips with software and security into fuller IoT platforms. In 2015, Intel folded IoT into a broader organization alongside several other businesses.
Why Intel created a dedicated IoT group
On November 6, 2013, EE Times reported that Intel had created a new Internet of Things Group (IOTG) and appointed Doug Davis as its general manager. Davis reported to the executive office under new CEO Brian Krzanich.
The move gathered Intel’s work for embedded markets in one organization. Those markets included industrial automation, retail, aerospace and automotive—settings where computing is built into equipment, infrastructure or products rather than used as a conventional personal computer.
What the 2013 group included
IOTG’s remit extended beyond chip sales. The group included Wind River and planned to bring together Intel’s Atom and Quark system-on-chip (SoC) products, Wind River software, McAfee security and other Intel assets as more complete software stacks and platforms. The strategy was to offer solution providers more of the components needed to build connected systems from one organization.

- USB-to-UART Port and ESP32-S3 USB Port (either one or both), default power supply (recommended)
Intel’s November 2014 investor presentation identified Davis as IOTG’s vice president and general manager. It forecast $2.1 billion in IOTG revenue for 2014 and projected an $11–13 billion serviceable addressable market for 2015. These were Intel’s forecasts and market estimate at the time, not independently verified actual results.
How Intel described its IoT platform
In December 2014, Intel described its IoT Platform as an end-to-end reference model intended to unify connectivity and security. The company said it was supported by integrated hardware and software, relationships with systems integrators, and a roadmap spanning edge devices through cloud services.

- Not only it is easy to program for this controller by using the CP2102-USB interface, but also unnecessary to press the flash and reset buttons before each flash operation.
- NodeMcu is an open source Lua based firmware for the ESP8266, ultra low cost wireless modules, development boards for rapid prototyping, integrated with ESP8266 chips.
- The ESP8266 has powerful on-board processing and storage capabilities, and can be integrated with sensors and other application-specific devices through its GPIOs.
- It is compatible with Arduino IDE,works great with the latest Mongoose IoT/Micropython.
- Modern Internet development tools can use the built-in API to instantly put your idea on the fast track.
The platform approach reflected the group’s broader aim: build beyond silicon by combining computing hardware with software and security. Davis described the effort as expanding Intel’s IoT product family beyond silicon through pre-integrated solutions for solution providers.
What changed in 2015
On November 20, 2015, Intel announced a new Client and Internet of Things Businesses and Systems Architecture Group, led by Murthy Renduchintala. It combined Platform Engineering, Client Computing, IoT, Software and Services, and Design & Technology Solutions. This was a later reorganization, distinct from the creation of IOTG in 2013.
